Is Saving Private Ryan the greatest WW2 movie of all time?
@cervanntes
2 ай бұрын
Greatest? Nah. Depends a bit on how you define WW2 movie, but I don't think it's really in the top 5. Sure, it has an iconic landing on D-Day but after that I'm not sure it really stands out among the crowd that much.

As a side note, if I had to pick my personal top 10 favorite WW2 movies, the 1959 Soviet film Ballad of a Soldier would definitely be on that list. It's kind of interesting to see the war from an idealized Soviet perspective.

Honestly, I didn't like that movie. I don't care for stories that bend over backwards to justify a specific ending and then still fail to justify it. (for anyone wondering what I'm talking about, there's no way the prisoner could've ended up getting ahead of the group)

No. "Come And See" is. Saving Private Ryan's opening scene is STUNNINGLY awesome - but after that it's nothing special. "Come And See" is definitely the best WW2 film - heck, as a combat vet, it's the best WAR film ever made. Other films better than SPR: the 1967 Polish film "Westerplatte" & 1957 masterpiece "Kanal"; the Russian films "Fortress Of War" and "Battle For Sevastopol"; "Letters From Iwo Jima"... I would even hazard the Chinese film "Death & Glory In Changde" is better

The real scenario would be that the Soviets wouldve left Ryan dead and not waste their resources to find him. Even if he did survive to see the Russian offensive, he would be first questioned whether or not he is not a turncoat to the Nazis.

Stalin refused to negotiate the release of his own captured son and let the nazis kill him. You can guess what would happen to Ryan. That said, this was slanderous, the ex-USSR had some decent WW2 movies and series.

Actually later in the war he proabbly would have been hunted down by smersh.
This Squire person started off with video game content and related skits, and apparently moved to more general historical stuff as his production values got better.
I'd definitely recommend reacting to some of Squires more popular tank related videos, they are a lot of fun

The guy with the shiny teeth was a reference to Ron Perlman's character in Enemy At The Gates. He was the guy that got shot jumping across the floor in a bombed out building by the German sniper. He had those gold looking teeth. The music towards the end sounds alot like the music in Red Orchestra 2 love that game and it's sound track.

I wasnt expecting the Rachel Weisz shot from "Enemy At The Gates"
Funny enough the way he shoots the ppsh is actually somewhat accurate. Like he's holding it away from him and side firing. That gun ejects out of the top, so many soldiers would actually fire it in a similar manner to avoid the casings going down their collar.
Just a comment on the Russian submachine gun. In the 1950's there was a television series called "The Untouchables" who's voice over was done by a staunch supporter of McCarthyism. So as a joke the production team put an image of that Russian submachine gun instead of an American Tommy gun on the title screen guessing he wouldn't notice. He didn't
Seeing one of my favourite YT channels - Mr. Terry - watching another of my favourite YT channels - Squire - IS BLISS! AWESOME!!!!
The movie is "enemy at the gates"
Can't wait to see more!

Lol, enemy at the gates is the film they were using. And making fun of in quite a few of the scenes.
What would amaze you is if you see thier old vids when they used low resolution cardboard props. Ever since they upgraded their graphics its been impressive.

I believe if a single son remained in service, they tried to move him to a rear area. This was implemented after the 5 Sullivan brothers were killed when their ship was sunk.
Mr Terry, when you asked about the metal teeth. In this they re-enacted the scene from Enemy at the Gates with the jumping scene. In that movie it’s Ron Perlman who gets shot and Ron Perlman’s character has fake metal (bronze I think) teeth
Yes. Please. And i recommend: most of them. Just pick at random.
Also "Victoria 3: When You Play as the British", most of the commentary doesn't rely on the viewer being familiar with the game (those games are so complicated even after 100s of hours you still barely know what you're doing)

They had the right weapons. Mosin-Nagant rifles and Nagant pistols. Very good.
I mean, Ivan is very common in Russia... someone call Comrade Stalin and tell him to list all Ivans for the next purge
They sometimes use real tanks from the Tank Museum in their skits.
The German equivalent to "Ivan" as a go to name for any soldier would be "Fritz".
Ah, Stalin. First he ordered that if you were captured your family would be sent to a gulag. Then when his son was captured, he sent his daughter in law and grandkids to a gulag. He did eventually sneak the grandkids out the back door. Hey, he wasn't a total monster.

Ngl, the funniest thing is that the main guy looks like Shostakovich.
To let everyone know the PPSH jamming problems was always with the magazines and the magazine well because the way it was designed, the fix for this was to find a mag that worked well with you're gun and keep that mag. The fire rate was around 1200 rpm btw.
Though obviously fake and ridiculous, the Saving Private Ryan mission didn’t end up being much of a waste of resources in a story because they contributed a significantly to the war effort while searching for Ryan, including taking out a hidden machine gun, killing a sniper and helping fight off the German attack on Ryan’s units position. Hollywood at its best and worst. They try to make a point about whether one man’s life could be worth it, but, in order to make it badass, the team has to have dramatic achievements on the way. Nullifying the central issue of whether their lives even were traded just for Ryan’s or just contributing to the cause in general.
Surprisingly enough, I don't see any comments by angry Tankies.
You should do a video on squire what if fruy was a British film
3:46 - 3:47 Can't remember what name they went by and I could be correct or incorrect but there were actual small forces that would kill any soviet soldier that tried to run from the battlefield. Then again I got this from a documentary from Red Star Media so I won't claim to know the 100% truth, so maybe or maybe not its a reference to that?
there are parts of enemy at the gates the sniper with the mirror i think has the same name as in the movie😉
Apparently russia did have a ton of deaths in world war 2, but without them tearing up germany on the western side germany was a powerhouse. My grandpa and his 3 brothers fought in ww2 and my grandpa talked about it like germany was on the verge of taking over the world.

The best worst WW2 movie is the Russian film, Elem Kimov's Come and See 1985.
The teeth thing was probably about how bad Soviet dentistry was.
Solder: stalin my whole family is dead. can I go home? Stalin: if you survive long enough to retake your home. Now get out of here if you want to survive my office
They are using Enemy At the Gates, i think.
i actually _havent_ seen Saving Private Ryan before, lol
Speaking of Pepesha (official name PPSH-41), yes, it had an outstanding, though fluctuating firerate, however it was pretty jam-resistant, as Russian tolerances were so high, that dirt usually would be shaken off before it presented the chance to jam the weapon. The biggest problem were the logistics, that due to being produced in bazillions of places (ranging from Izhevsk factories to Siberian workshops) guns and mags had to be specifically fitted to each other. Just imagine being fired at by a squad of those. Pretty sure there are very little traumatising experiences, that could match it.

Funny. When I was 16 and I grew out a beard I looked 30(early bloomer). When I didn't I looked like a moderately attractive woman. I had long hair. Metalhead.
Enemy at the gates was better than saving privaye ryan to me. Especially the scene where the Russian conscripts are loaded directly off the trucks and into the battle. Wild stuff for sure.
