Tattoos have a long and colorful history across the world, and are an important part of many cultures. While 1 in 3 Americans have at least 1 tattoo today, western culture still sees the art form as counter culture, risque and rebellious. You might be shocked if you learned that your grandma was inked. And you certainly wouldn’t expect that prim and proper royals of the Victorian era were concealing covert tattoos under their stiff dress uniforms and frilly gowns. But in fact, a handful of trend setting Princes in the late 19th century started an aristocratic craze for secret ink. Let’s take a journey through the history of tattoo, learn how it flourished on other continents, but passed Europe by, and was then enthusiastically reintroduced. Along the way, we’ll meet several royals from history who were secretly tatted up!
King Edward VII of the UK
King George V of the UK
Grand Duke Alexis of Russia
Alfonso XIII of Spain
Frederik IX of Denmark
Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany
King Oscar II of Sweden
King Ferdinand I of Romania
King George II of Greece
Crown Prince Rudolph of Austria
King Alexander of Yugoslavia
Empress Elisabeth of Austria
Princess Marie of Orléans

My great grandmother was known for her judgy, stuck-up behavior. My grandmother, her daughter-in-law, didn’t have anything nice to say about her. Imagine my surprise to find out she had a large butterfly tattoo on her thigh!

Haha this reminds me of a resident I was taking care of at one point. When I wasn’t assigned to her care, she would shame my tattoos. When I was in her care team, we undressed for a bath and bam a large flower design going down her side, under the arm pit to hip. “Betsy!!! You have a larger tattoo than all of mine combined!”

I think he got the tatoo just to spite her, since it was his second favorite hobby.
Actually, recent studies of Ötzi's tattoos show they were handpoked with a "needle" of some sort, perhaps made of bone, and not made from slits cut into the skin as previously thought. They were made the same way more modern tattoos are made.

I love youtubers who are making videos that reflect the phrase "I never though about this, but now need all the details" Ps. I have a suggestion for topic on this channel. Since we are talking more about female monarchs, it would be great to see something about male consorts. Most people just think about Prince Albert or Prince Philip and dosen't know how interesing it is. I wish good day/night for everyone!
Less loved by Gen Z? My gen z kids have even more ink than I do! My 20 year olds running out of real estate, and there's an ink shop on every block banging them out.

Indeed ~ it gave me pause as well. Just looked at US statistics and it appears that, as of 2021 these are the most inked generations, in order: Millennials (41%), Gen X (32%), Gen Z (23%), Boomers (12%).

The title of this video doesn’t do it justice! I learned so much about the history of tattooing, your informative content never ceases to entertain
Prince Alfred of Saxe Coburg (Duke of Edinburgh) was Prince Edward's younger brother, not his uncle. Very good video.

Yeah exactly.
Iroquois is a European name for a confederacy rather than the name of a tribe. None of the tribes in the confederacy was named Iroquois. The tribes were Oneida, Onondaga, Seneca, Mohawk, Cayuga, and after 1722 Tuscarora. The actual name of the confederacy is Haudenosaunee.

and most if not all got them when they turned 16. The high school halls are filled with inked up juniors and seniors. My niece just turned 18 but she already had 3 tattoos before that. Tattoos are no longer the "right of passage" for turning 18 like they were when we were that age. Lol

That’s definitely false. As a gen z who had graduated in 2023. during my four years in high school I have seen older and kids who were the same age as me during my time as a freshman, sophomore, and junior years with tattoos. I’m planning to get a tattoo on my chest or on my left arm …….eventually.
Tattoos are popular here in Australia, I’m in my 60s and have six. I knew Tsar Nicholas had a tattoo but not the other Victorian royals. Interesting video 😊😊
Not sure if you've noticed, but "Meiji" is pronounce as "May-jee" not "Maj-eye". Love your videos btw
another great video lindsay!!!! really informative and it covers an interesting subject that i never thought about before. this is unrelated, but i really appreciate that you don't use AI-generated images in your videos, and take the time to gather real photos and illustrations that are taken from history. i've noticed a pretty alarming rise of 'history' channels on youtube that use AI-generated photos as part of their videos, and it bothers me to see. so i'd like to thank you for always using genuine images. anyway, i love your channel and it always excites me to see that you uploaded a new video. happy april!

When I got my first tattoo, I was worried that my grandma would hate it, since she grew up in the 50s and is pretty 'traditional'. Much to my surprise she thought it was 'oh so beautiful' and was even more excited when she found out it was a matching one with my mom (her daughter)! Although she was worried about how much it would have hurt haha
Fun fact: the star tattoo plenty of lesbians where to get those starnavy tattoos on their arms and or wrists and it was the secret symbol to know that another lady was a lesbian and they were usually covered up by their sleeves or watches

Lindsay Holiday! I have a suggestion for a Series of the Kings of France! Also this was a very great video! You never fail to make good , Fun and Interesting Royal History Videos!
My grandmother moved onto indigenous nations land and lived with them at the end of her life. She had tattoos. She had severe dementia and forgotten any family, as we visited her there. She didn't want to leave and was content. We paid those caring for her. They sent her home to us when she died. Mom didn't know about the tattoos as the grandchildren kept that from the more "stiff" of the older generation. 😂

King Frederik the IX's tattoos were hardly a secret. In fact, the government enforced laws that are still active today in Denmark, for it to be illegal for tattoo shops to tattoo people from the neck up and on the hands. It was laws instated to enforce the King to not get tattoos in these places.
King Paul of Greece had a tattoo in his hand! Not king George ii,so that's actually wrong! You can even find photos of king Paul with his tattoo
another royal (technically) that had a tattoo was Laupepa (known formally as Malietoa Laupepa) of Samoa, he had his kingly pe’a tattoo done in his forties (so like 1880s?).

Well I do suppose I was inked once or twice ✒️
gen z loves tats, we are just too broke lol
It might be possible that gen z does not have as many reported tattoos as millennials, but I would argue that they are just as popular among both generations. Many can't afford tattoos given the economic climate. And a good chunk of gen z is still below the age of 18. It definitely skews the data when so many are not even eligible to get one yet.
