As wildly (and openly) inaccurate as Charlotte’s story is in Bridgerton, it’s interesting the historical facts they did incorporate like her bringing in a young Mozart to play for her, her addiction to snorting snuff, and the unlikely situation of having so many kids reach adulthood but have no legitimate grandkids such that it threatened a succession crisis. I had been sure that last one was just for the drama!

@@HeidiSholl Poor Victoria was under her Mother's stern care. She was not allowed to play with other children for fear of becoming ill. She was not allowed to go down any stairs by herself, someone had to always hold her hand. She also shared her bedroom with her Mother. It wasn't until she became Queen that she had any freedom. She never had any experience with children, except her Mother's ideas. Victoria knew little of childbirth and raising babies. Prince Albert spent more time with their children.

@@westzed23 It's pretty well documented that she disliked them into adulthood, not just as babies. She was a control freak, she might have had her first taste of freedom when she turned 18, but her children kept having to fight for theirs. By all accounts, she was a pretty horrible woman. I don't have much sympathy for her. Regardless of tragic backstorys, some people are just cruel.

Although the Bridgeton spinoff it’s not entirely correct, I have to say I really am enjoying the series. I feel as if they portray George III in a much more personal manner, rather than being known as a mad king he is shown as a genuine kind man with mental illness. They really truly loved each other.

Yeah well Shonda never claimed any historical accuracy in her shows. I don’t get why people seem to not get the difference between period dramas and documentaries. There are many shows loosely based on people who existed in real life and nobody seems to mind. Even the Bible comes to mind in that department lol but with Bridgerton people are VERY salty about the historic inaccuracies 😂 it’s obviously fiction, why wouldn’t they take artistic freedom? With Hamilton nobody complains about Charlottes and George’s depiction

These large families are amazing. I am surprised Charlotte had 15 babies. I grew up as an only - with multiple cousins but still an only. I dated a guy who was 1 of 17. When he said he would compromise by settling for a small family of 8...I knew things would not work out.

Just a tiny correction: Charlotte's journey to London from Germany for her marriage to George III didn't take 2 months. She left her home on August 17, 1761, and arrived on the shores of England on September 7, 1761, so it took about 3 weeks.

The one part of Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story that I despised was the portrayal of the princesses. While I know the show wasn’t meant to be historically accurate, but the fact that the writers made it seem like the princesses chose to be single is rather annoying. It was the monarch who chose when royal princesses could get married and to whom. George III and Charlotte chose to disregard marriage proposals. George didn’t want to part with his daughters and Charlotte wanted to spare them the agony of constant pregnancies. I can overlook all the other inaccuracies because it’s a fictional show, but that one I just can’t tolerate. Seeing Charlotte berate her daughters when they, in reality, wanted nothing more than to marry and start there own lives was just too much. I loved everything else about the show but that.

As someone with HCP, a type of porphyria under the Hepatic Porphyria umbrella, I’m glad you are covering Queen Charlotte and George III. The disease/disorder is a nightmare not just for the sufferers but the ones close to them (family and other loved ones) especially. It’s so tough to manage even now, in modern times, I can’t imagine how she kept it together and their large family. It’s heartbreaking but shows their strength.

It's good to know that their personalities went together well because it doesn't sound like the poor girl had much of a choice.

I really loved the costuming in Bridgerton, one of the things I noticed is how Queen Charlotte still wore the tight corsets and big skirts even when by the main storyline/ foward time jumps the high waisted dresses became more in fashion. I remember thinking how i loved the corsets they were giving so much more! and I love the fact even as time changed she didn’t care lol made her so much more “queenly” in my opinion lol

While the new series does take a lot of liberties (and quite boldly), I like how it pays homage to certain elements that were drawn from historical record. Charlotte and Augusta’s contentious relationship and the race for her children to produce a new heir after Princess Charlotte’s death were favorites of mine.

@@natashar559 the mistreatment for Elizabeth's father was more that King George III had promised him a lot and said he and the nation owed him a great deal, but those rewards and promises never came to fruition and george still had the audacity to visit Kenwood after lord Mansfield's death. for Mary Hamilton, a former Royal governess, it's very cryptic her diaries was empty for a few pages, but she did write that her uncle agreed with her that the Queen has mistreated her because she wanted to quit her post as governess, the Queen insulted her but i felt like the Queen felt betrayed that Hamilton didn't want to be like Lady Charlotte Finch ( also governess/best friend ish idk what she was ) again they have the same friend group duchess of portland, etc

My Grandma had 12 kids, and when you read Charlotte's complaint I could see her ghost cheering for that. For real. My Dad was the last one, he's 17 years younger than the eldest brother.

@@moonriver9503 My aunt was childhood friends with a girl who was one out of 22 too. The sad thing is not all of them reached adulthood. The parents might have had some genetical defect and all the boys they had died soon after birth and only the girls survived, so they ended up being like 14 survivors, all girls.

Great video! I've been so happy that the new Bridgerton show has got people more curious about the real life Queen Charlotte and George III - their story is so fascinating but they (especially George III) are usually painted in a negative light. They were all white and all royal. You seriously think a half black baby couldve made it in a European royal family in the 1500-1600s?! Hell to the no. It would be considered illegitimate and given away IF it happened at all. History is not a fun fictional tv show. They may have even killed a mixed baby. When her contemporaries imply she looked ethnic, they mean she had a bigger nose or fuller lips than most european royalty (they all looked alike because they were mistly imbred) and maybe an olive complexion instead of pink. Kinda like an italian. Theyre definitely white but not a pink white like a very very light tan white. She was Portuguese after all. They dont mean shes Sub Saharan African.

Queen Charlotte deserves more credit than what is recorded. She is considered a successful queen in her days. I wonder how much influence the queen had with her granddaughter and namesake. They only mentioned she helped with Charlotte's education but no further elaboration.

To be honest, what I don't get from people is why they get surprised that "Bridgerton: Queen Charlotte" is not accurate. Like no offense, if you watch the first episode of that show they do say in the first few seconds how the show is not to be historically accurate at all but just a drama, like, if they don't get it the first time that's alright, but, it's not even a surprise at all.

Hi Lindsay, I've been a long-time fan of your channel, they're incredibly well-informed and thoughtfully layed out and so entertaining and informative! It fuels my admiration and fascination with royalty around the the world! I must say; I was so impressed with the videos on "stolen" jewels in the crown jewels of the BRF because a large majority of content creators on the BRF stay clear of any, if not all, controversial topics in their videos etc. Please continue to produce high calibre content as you HAVE been doing all these years and know that they are so much appreciated! They have kept me informed and entertained for hours!

Because she so hated being pregnant, she sought to spare her beloved daughters this horrible ordeal. If the girls wanted to marry and become pregnant, that was just proof they were too innocent to know what was good for them. Of course, when her grand daughter Charlotte, Princess of Wales, died after an exhaustive labor, Queen Charlotte was right.

Well-narrated, and excellently illustrated. I did not seek this video out, but quickly got hooked by tone-of-narration, and interest in the King that oversaw the separation of the American Revolution. Sad about aspects of how Charlotte's life turned out. And the King sinking into madness.

She was white. There is no proven evidence of any Moorish ancestor, and even if there was it was so many generations ago in her line she is considered white by everyone for all our English history and worldwide. It is what it is and shouldn't be twisted according to agendas. Netflix is just messing with history again.

Even if the show was innacurate, because they did state that it was just a story of actual people. Its cool to know they incorperated small factors like the Christmas Tree, Mozart, her drug addiction, her children and their affairs. EVEN THE MAIN QUOTE "i live for the happiness or misery of a great nation".

Thank you. That explains why the movie portraying Charlotte as a black woman. 15 generations is a long long time. After that long a period I doubt there would be any physical markers as to her ancestry only in her DNA perhaps.

It‘s not only 15 generations back. There is no evidence that this affair had existed in the first place. Some black history guy with 0 reputation in science made this theory and presented zero proof hence no known historian follows with this fanfiction

Not only is it a long time, but we don’t even know what the ancestor’s ethnicity even was. All we know was that she was a Moor, which was a cultural, geographical and religious term for a Muslim, and that she converted to Christianity as a teenager, became the king of Portugal’s mistress at around 18 or 19, and had 2 or 3 of his children.

Stopppp there was enough dna for them to use her more ethic looking photos (7:14) to convince black people in America to fight for the British army in the American revolution. Y’all go from one drop rule to “it doesn’t matter” when it’s convenient to you.

Regardless of if that ancestry is real and her moorish ancestor was actually black and not some other race, people would look crazy at a white person in 2023 who said they were black due to ancestry from literally half a millenium ago, so I don't get why people act like it would mean something even if it wasnt almost certainly a myth.

It's wonderful that Queen Charlotte is receiving a great deal of attention recently. She has quite an interesting story! 👑 Her childbirth record is also very impressive! I feel incredibly sorry for her though. I can't imagine losing a beloved husband to mental illness. She was very brave to stay by her husband, even when his mental health was in ruins. She really took her marriage seriously, especially the in sickness and in health part. No wonder King George III stayed faithful and loving to her. ❤ And even though it's probably false, it would have been incredibly interesting if she really did have some African blood coursing through her veins. Now I'm going to need to watch Bridgerton and its spinoff about Queen Charlotte. 😊 Edit: Just watched Bridgerton and Queen Charlotte and I'm very pleased with the period drama. 👸 It's very beautiful, romantic and glamorous! Really great love stories, my favorite being King George III and his wife Queen Charlotte. 💖

It's not false it's a theory Valdes investigated since her ancestors Alfonso 3rd had a black lover in the 13th century. Now, how do we know if it's true or not, we don't know. Unless one of the royal family does an ancestry test, which I'd be so interesting

​@@anam4484 Oh, the reason why I assumed that it's probably not true, is because when I watched the Queens and Consorts of England series, I remember hearing that Queen Charlotte's African ancestry would've been less than one percent if it was known for sure due to her supposed ancestor being separated from her by about 500 years I believe. But I'm not an expert on genealogy, so I might be completely wrong here. 😅
