Historic Local Homes | Living St. Louis

Living St. Louis Producer Jim Kirchherr tours some of the oldest homes in the St. Louis area. His first stop is at the Hanley House in Clayton which was turned into a museum after its purchase by the city in 1968. Across the river in Edwardsville, Illinois, the Stevenson House has also been restored. The Twillman House in Spanish Lake has been turned into a community center and the Payne-Gentry House in Bridgeton is also undergoing renovations to preserve its history for future generations. Historic homes can be found in all parts of the city, from University City and Maplewood to Bridgeton, but it can be very time consuming and costly to restore these houses.

It's weird how the algorithm works, but I'm always glad when it hits on gems.

On what is now New Florissant Road (used to be just Florissant Rd., as opposed to West Florissant) you could see in the distance a large white house that loomed over Lake Pembroke Estates across from Ferguson Hills, don't know if it is still there or not and what house it would have been. It was not Taille de Noyer.

That last house they were renovating the windows. One time on This Old House they had some people redoing their windows and they didn't put new windows in they refurbished the old ones and I'm telling you that's the way to go. I once saw an option at a window place for Windows that had simulated glass dividers, ugh wait till you see that!

Anything that is listed on the historical register has to remain period correct. Meaning nothing can be updated with modern materials... As a contractor I must say historical jobs like that are goldmines! Idk why people think that using older materials needs to cost double money 😆

WHY must Progress mean Completely Bull Dozing The Past ??? Thankfully there are people in St Louis who believe that this need not be the case. 🎉🎉🎉

It wouldn't be so much if they wouldn't, let them decay for decades
