The part you mentioned in the end are indeed kind of battle reports of the U-Boats that took part in that attack. 6 Boats were in battle, but just two of them scored all the kills: U-96 (3 sunk) and U-124 (4 sunk). Bury failing the test means that the rescue ship Bury was equipped with a new type of radar, that obviously didnt work as anticipated. There are some inacurancies though...7 of 42 ships were sunk, thats not quite "half of the convoy". Bury was also not hit but managed to pick up survivors from other vessels.

Unrelated… though, eh… I’d say it’s kinda unrelated (it’s in the ballpark), but just only this morning I watched “The sinking of the Laconia” mini-series which revolved around the true story of a German U-boat attempting to save the passengers and Italian POWs of an Allied cruise ship after they’d torpedoed it. Honestly, I found the whole saga to be great as well as quite saddening - especially after looking into the full history of the incident.

The story of the Laconia is like a very sad farce, If you would tell it like a fictional story I don't think anyone would believe that it actually happened. It's such a crazy story.

History by Mail looks like an awesome service... I'll check it out but shipping to the black hole I'm in might be very costly...
