Hispanics, Latinx people face confusion with "race" box

Hispanics and Latinx people struggle to find where to fit in when it comes to filling out forms when they're not often represented.

Because ethnicity and race as much as we say other wise, does predicate a lot of things. If you know someone's race and ethnicity, you can more than likely peg what language they may speak, what country they are from, what religion they might follow, and a whole slew of other culturally *important* details for *any* government. Need I also remind you that certain races are more susceptible to certain medical conditions. (Sickle cell disease for example among other things.) so aggregation of this data is also *objectively* useful. Most other animals around our size bleed red too and share over 90% of our DNA....Does that mean what's good for the goose is also good for the human? I'm sorry for being cynical, but your just spouting a platitude that is simply not true... There doesn't have to be some nefarious purpose behind why this is done. More streamlined, categorized data is always good, and like it or not, race and ethnicity still differentiates us culturally and medically *enough* to make differences for both fields... If we humanity ever unite under one banner, with an overarching mono culture, and with most people being racially mixed, then *SURE* it won't really matter. But that is not the case today, won't be the case this century, nor probably the next. Hell, if we ever start populating other planets, then our evolution as a species will likely diverge depending on the planet and local environment, so in the far future, we might potentially split off to many degrees evolutionary speaking...I don't foresee a Star Trek Future in all honesty...

If you're a white Mexican, or whatever latin american country you from and have white skin, select white and hispanic box. Of course we're Native American, just detribalized because of race mixing and adopting the latin culture and language. In Latin America natives were not killed off like here in the USA, and White European Spanish/Italian/Portuguese explorers mixed with the indigenous people of Latin American making us the hispanic people of today.

Catalina and her daughter are both white racially and Hispanic ethnically. It's not that complicated... Dr. Cristobal can put mixed (between indigenous and white) on the census, but he also leans ever so slightly on the white side racially, so he could put either or really. (IMO) He's def not purely or even majority indigenous though... I think part of this issue stems from the fact that *Traditionally* in America, "White" was actually shorthand for people of Anglo-Saxon lineage, and much later German, Central European, and or Eastern European origin in the early 20th century. More European/lighter skinned looking Hispanics obviously have more Iberian (Spanish) blood in them, and are thus technically "white" according to the US government. I'm ethnically Mexican, but very light skinned and with mostly European features. Most people who don't hear my last name have fun trying to come up with my racial origins. I have been mistook for Spanish, French, Italian, Jewish, Iranian, Turkish and of course all other Latin nations, but never gotten pegged as purely or mostly indigenous for sure, and thus I put white for race, and Hispanic for ethnicity. If the term "white" is too distasteful for the people in this videos (not trying to assume anything, but it looks to me like they don't want to be called white for "reasons" I won't touch upon) then either say your mixed racially, mention your country of ethnic origin, and or make peace with the fact that you may have mostly Iberian (European) blood in you and are thus technically "White". AND THAT'S OKAY.... Stop being so damn weird about it...

@@-xnnybimb-9398 Dude what are you even talking about now? "They weren’t accepted because they were “free white persons of good character,” they were actively being removed after the war." What war? I never said anything about any war, so what exactly do you mean here? Also since when are Spaniards not also considered Hispanic? Nice revisionist history there... I could point you to plenty of COMMISSIONED HISPANIC OFFICERS pre 1960s in REGULAR ARMY UNITS. It's one thing that Hispanics could enlist in regular military units, but to also let them be commissioned officers in charge of other white people showed they didn't really look down on Hispanics that were educated and talked fluent English. Also, Tejano culture is a thing, (as is much other culture from the Southwest US) How would such a sub subculture evolve and flourish if Hispanics weren't allowed to be free citizens in America? Also, why is it that Hispanics were often (and still are lumped with anglos) as "white" when it comes to criminal statistics, their birth certificates, the census, etc... As long as a Hispanic person could speak fluent English and wasn't fervently patriotic of their nation of origin while living here, they weren't as discriminated against as blacks or Asians. If they also looked mostly white like the people in this video, they were treated like any other white American. You may have some points here and there, but you also are omitting clear examples of successful Hispanic citizens pre 1960s The racism against Hispanic Americans isn't as clear cut like it was with blacks or Asians pre 1960s and there was A LOT OF NUANCE involved.

I always knew I was "Mestiza" so I would list myself as "Hispanic/Latino" in the ethnicity category and for the race category I'd list "mixed" or "prefer not to answer". After taking a 23&Me test my results came back as 60% Native American (Mainly North American). Just seeing it there, clear and simple, it was quite eye opening. 60% is rather substantial and I felt it only right to explicitly list my native American ancestry. So for the 2020 census I list myself as "native American" and "white" to indicate my mixture. And when it prompted me to list my native American tribe I wrote "unknown". Since the census, I've been working on my family tree during my free time to learn more about my ancestry. A girl from Manila, who, let's say, speaks Spanish, can identify as "Latina" or "Latin," and who'd argue with her? And let's say that she moved to New York and blended in with the Boricua community. It would "fly." And let's say that a Celtic Spaniard woman said that she was white Latin. There it goes... Do we have Americans who are black and white? Obviously.

This interest in racially pigeonholed individuals, which shows is that culturally the psyche of the North American administration continues to be fundamentally English, Protestant and of a Darwinian tradition in its most negative concept. The problem is we are using racial categories that were flawed in the first place to categorize people into boxes. The first problem is the words white and black to define people. These are not terms used in other languages and are unique to the evolution of the English language in the United States of America. As an example, in Spanish (Castilian), the term used more often used traditionally for a dark-skinned person Moreno (literally Moorish). This shows how words evolved from the shared experiences of one group of people and passed on through its history. The term Moreno or morisco historically correlates with the Muslims in and neighboring the Iberian peninsula. The word was brought to Ibero-America, where Spanish/Portuguese /French speaking (Latin/Latino -Romance language speaking and cultures) was used to describe physical characteristics. To keep this brief. Latin America (Romance/Roman/Latin language and culture) is the region in the Americas that had contact with Europeans (Mediterranean) first and the longest. It is common knowledge of the mixture in Latin America, with European (Iberian) being the dominant culture. Cultural and genetic, European is the most significant component, mind you that here we must emphasize the difference in the thought of the view in Inero America from Anglo America. In the USA, a person is considered white if he is believed to have 100% European ancestry. In Latin America, a person is not denied his European heritage if he is of mixed heritage. So if you acknowledge that mixed-race people who have European ancestors don't lose their European component, then Latin America does indeed have the most significant element of people, with some percentage of European ancestry. Regarding culture, that is, language, law, education, business, lifestyle, religion, etc., The confusion about what Latin is (Latinx is not an accurate word as a gender-neutral word exists in the English language) is on the origins of its people(in the USA, they call it race). Anthropologists could easily answer this and not politicians. In Ibero-America, there was an ancestral cast system that was never fully embraced. It differs from the USA racial categories. In the USA, the white, Black, Native American (only if affiliated with a recognized drive), Asian, and Pacific Islander concepts are still used. In Ibero-America, it was Europen, Mestizo, Castizo, Mulato, Morisco, Indio, and way more complex. In the end, the difference is that in the Afro-American system, a person gave their children different labels and moved up and down (helped with money) from none European to European. Mix heritage has been part of the region's history since the first Iberian Europeans made contact and had children with pre-European women. In the USA, there was no change from the white, black, and Indian imposed labels. Today, mixed people are not counted in the census. One thing I find odd about the USA census is the word white and caucasian, as well as black and color designations. Even do constancy segregates society into such identified will only lead society to the same ethnic conflicts found in southeast and Europe and Western Asia (Asia minor and middle East). A better terminology would be European instead or white. I also had the experience of traveling to Eastern Europe, where the term caucasian means a person from the caucasian mountain regions, which made me. Realize the term is used wrong in the USA as the caucasian mountains (Chechen, Dagestani, Azerbaijans, etc.)are not in Europe, and the people there presently predominantly Muslim and have their own history and traditions, which have little to nothing to do with Europe. Same for Africa. Instead of Black. Referring to a region instead of a color concept would be a more educated use of language. Lastly, Ibero-America is and has been more diverse than the USA in the amounts of immigration over centuries of people coming from Europe, Asia, and Africa which came into contact with pre-European cultures and over time shaped the history and admixtured of people till this day. Latin Americans are people of diverse backgrounds, with the majority having a significant European component with admixtures with other people from pre-European, African, and Asian elements. I don't think we need labels at all because such identities will only segregate people. It is a waste of time to continue to make new racial categories instead of unifying people as one nationality. Skin color is just a physical characteristic and language and traditions are culture. As long as it doesn't divide people, then it can be acknowledged but too much emphasis on segregating people will lead us to tribalism.

This is so absurd when they confuse nationalities or ethnicites as racial/genetic categories, using wrong labels… Both hispanic and latin concepts refers to linguistic-cultural groupings, not with race, genetics nor geographical origins. Hispanic means being of a spanish-speaking culture, and latin means being from a latin (you say romance in english) culture. That’s it. Nothing to do with skin color or how you look. Latin does not relates to latin-America either. It refers to the countries of romance language. Who inheritated their culture after the roman empire, Italy, Spain, France, Portugal, Romania…. It is only with colonization from these countries that people of the central and southern parts of the Americas became latin too.

Latin originates from Ancient Rome, Italy. If you’re a Latin American who is brown, you’re indigenous. If you’re a Latin American with more European features (blond hair blue eyes for example) you’re white.

When it comes to skin color we are all some shade of brown. As far as blond hair and blue eyes are considered most whites have neither of those two traits. And lots of non- whites have blue eyes. There are no genes or sets of genes that all members of one so called "race" have in common with one another and at the same time are absent in everyone of a different race. This is why there is no DNA test for determining a person's race.

@@geminirants424 I'm not sure what you mean by "technically" but biologically speaking there is no such thing as different races among modern day humans. The five century old theory that there are white, black, etc. races was based on pseudoscience and has been debunked. BTW- what's "genetic survival"?

  • @geminirants424

@@kindnessfirst9670 I know there really is no such thing as race but you have to think WHO invented "race" and WHY? What were their intentions. Genetically Caucasians are recessively genetic which means they are weak. I'm not calling them dumb, they are basically a knock off generic version of Africans. And supposedly light skin has only been around for 8,000 years. If neathrandrals we're light skin/white, how did they get wiped out? And how is there very little information about how and when and why, Caucasians we're evolved? Yet we have information about the universe and dinosaurs. Ppl are mad because they know somebody is LYING about something. Some one is hiding and rewriting history, what' is their reason for that? And look up genetic survival and biology if you really concerned about it . But it is the truth, that is what the kkk wanted and inspired by. Also many white males are obsessed with keeping their white "race" alive so if technically we are all the same human race, why does it matter what color we are? White ppl in power are the only ones dividing ppl through titles like race, nationality, and ethnicity..
