I believe it is mandated here, which is what baffles me... though I know some regions and cities etc have terrible schools and their own standards, so I could be wrong at least in part. I remember learning the countries in Africa and US states etc at the age of 4, despite living in an area with fairly bad schools, and then learning in more depth from there... so this was surprising to me. Maybe these people forgot, or bullshitted their way through school. I really don't know.

@Dash, The map in the video is a (Europe-centered) _Van der Grinten_ projection which they cut up into two and rearranged in order to place the Western hemisphere on the righthandside. This means that the map is heavily distorted in the middle. (Look at how irrealistically wide that Bering Strait is; the whole of Alaska fits into it!) Note: it's _not_ a Sino-centric (or Pacific-centered) _Van der Grinten_ projection.

@Red Hood I'm from Australia but we don't learn this in school, usually kids just use the American invention of google to find out for themselves. I could name every country on earth by age 7 as with many others.

in the philippines, as kids we play a game about naming a country then looking for it in the map. we take turns. The country Togo was my trump card. It's hard to find.

In South Africa, we don’t really learn about the geography of other countries- how or where they are. We just learn about SA geography. However since I’m a nerd if you give me any map I’ll be able to name all the countries so yeh hehe ✌️😗

As a Canadian it's comforting to know if the States ever wants to invade they will never find us all tucked away down there

I'm from New Zealand, and we have maps like these because NZ is in the centre of them and not falling off the edge. I agree though, the ones they're used to would have the Americas to the left and NZ in the very far right corner.

You may have spotted a fundamental issue here. Part of basic geography is that there are continents; and these are divided up by political boarders and all geological formations into countries.

That felt like scraping finger nails on a chalk board.

Here in Argentina you can´t pass to secondary school not knowing at least all the countries in America. (Here we have 5 continents. America, Asia, Europe, Oceania and Africa)

@@martiarnouk It's the same everywhere, we all have exams and need to know all the continents, ocean and country, people just forget over time... Normally, younger you are, and better you are, because it's fresh. I already did a IQ test when I was young (high shcool), I hit 140-160 (and yes it's just insane), but the questions was about general knowledge we just learn at school. Today (i'm 31), the same test, and I'm not sure I hit 80 lol
