Can You Name a Book? ANY Book???

According to a recent study from the Pew Research Center, almost one in four Americans has not read a book in the past year. So to find out if that is true, we sent a team to the street to ask pedestrians to name a book, and here are the very sad results.

I told them that I love literature. Then they asked me to name some books. They didn't give me any explanations. I was confused because I didn't know if they want me to name something from school program or something I enjoy. I was so anxious and all my classmates were there, which made me even more anxious, so I don't even remember now if I said anything properly. I love reading by the way! To be fair, “The Jungle Book” was a book by Rudyard Kipling. From my memory, the characters’ personalities were sort of different from the Disney movies. For example, Hathi the elephant didn’t act like a military colonel, and rarely spoke. But that guy not knowing that it was a book was concerning.

These videos are heavily edited for maximum humor. The punchline that people don't read anymore wouldn't work unless they feature those people who either really don't read or who freeze up in front of the camera so much that they can't give any decent response. They probably got dozens of answers from people who could "name a book", but that wouldn't have fit their premise. It's not actually a commentary on illiteracy in modern America. They're just having a laugh.

@RandalfTheBlack Even so, and I know people can be put on the spot and almost go blank - but if someone does read regularly, they should at least know the name of the current book they are reading, whatever it is. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, The Hunger Games, The Help, The Lorax, y'know whatever it is current. Obviously, Kimmel found people who already admit they don't read books making that question even harder for them. It is still pretty scary. I'm sure they talked to people who could name books, but I wonder how many they asked and what the ratio was. Was it 10 to 1? 10 knew a book and 1 didn't so they asked like 50 people and had 5 who didn't know? I'm a lil' worried to know the answer.

We just got there and we hadn't even seen the tree properly yet. I'm not religious and I didn't know what to say about the first advent, so I improvised and said:"It means peace and a time being with my family. A peaceful time." Since I was at peace and with my family. It turned out to be the right answer for the TV crew as we were shown in the evening news. And it was also straight from the heart.

They also understand that this is a comedy segment that aims to poke fun at people who don’t ever read books, so they subconsciously conform to the role that’s expected of them by the audience. Or maybe they consciously do so because they realise they won’t be on TV if they name a book. Get off your high horse.
