L C The Latins (Latin: Latini), sometimes known as the Latians, were an Italic tribe which included the early inhabitants of the city of Rome. From about 1000 BC, the Latins inhabited the small region known to the Romans as Old Latium (Latium Vetus), that is, the area between the river Tiber and the promontory of Mount Circeo 100 kilometres (62 mi) SE of Rome. The Latins were an Indo-European people who probably migrated into the Italian Peninsula during the late Bronze Age (1200-900 BC). Their language, Latin, belonged to the Italic branch of Indo-European. Their material culture, known as the Latial culture, was a distinctive subset of the Proto-Villanovan culture that appeared in parts of the Italian peninsula in the first half of the 12th century BC. The Latins maintained close culturo-religious relations until they were definitively united politically under Rome in 338 BC, and for centuries beyond. These included common festivals and religious sanctuaries. The rise of Rome as by far the most populous and powerful Latin state from c. 600 BC led to volatile relations with the other Latin states, which numbered about 14 in 500 BC. In the period of the Tarquin monarchy (c. 550-500 BC), it appears that Rome acquired political hegemony over the other states. After the fall of the Roman monarchy in c. 500 BC, there appears to have been a century of military alliance between Rome and the other Latins to confront the threat posed to all Latium by raiding by the surrounding Italic mountain-tribes, especially the Volsci and Aequi. This system progressively broke down after c. 390 BC, when Rome's aggressive expansionism led to conflict with other Latin states, both individually and collectively. In 341-338 BC, the Latin states jointly fought the Latin War against Rome in a final attempt to preserve their independence. The war resulted in 338 BC in a decisive Roman victory. The other Latin states were either annexed or permanently subjugated to Rome.

Saying that Mexican/Latino/etc is a race/ethnicity is like saying American is a race. Just inconceivable. There is as much ( if not more ) racial diversity in Latin America as in the US. So yeah

Exactly! Latin is a cultural heritage,not a race. And hispanic is a language group,not a race too. Latins and hispanics can be from any ethnicity,white,black,native american,asian and etc. United States people need to understand that. And also,Quebec is a part of Latin America too. The “Latino” concept only has relevance in the US. Here in actual Latin America it makes no sense! We divide ourselves more in countries or by being part of an indigenous nation. I’m Chilean, my heritage is European (Spaniard and Italian mostly), but in Chile is not that big of a deal. The American concept of race is a bit strange for us.

Really interesting! I’ve always used theses labels without really thinking about what they mean. I guess Mestizo is the best description for me. Being Colombian I always was aware that my Abuela was amerindia (Panche) but living in the US has made me kinda adopt these imperfect terminologies. Thanks for the video.

Many people I know consider Mexican a race. They're boggled when I point out they're not. My general knowledge of the southern America makes it extremely difficult to say Mexican is race.

The easiest way to explain it to those people is just to point out that "Mexicans" weren't a race that existed on it's own like white, black, asian, native american etc. Just that they're mostly a mixuture of white and native american. Mix of two races, not one

I should also point out that term, Latin (Latino), refers to the Romance peoples of Europe (French, Spanish, Portugese, Italians, etc). Latin AMERICANS (Latinos Americanos) refers to the people in Central and South America who speak a Latin language.

Latino is an invented word by Napoleon III when he conquered Mexico in order to eliminate any Spanish relationship. The historic and accurate description is Hispanoamerica and Hispanos. That works for the Iberians(portugal, Spain) because Hispania was the name of the Peninsula when first the Romans and after Visigoths unify and give clear borders, rules and religion. And Hispanoamerica are the descendants of this culture, Hispanic/Iberian culture not latin(latio Italy)

Napoleon III brought the term "Latin America" and, consequentially, "Latin American". "Latino" and "Hispanic" are American inventions. The difference is relevant, because while "Latin American" is more easily understood as the national of a Latin American country, "Latino" is a vague concept referring to race, ethnicity, nationality, culture and language all at once.

But the cultural connection is still there. Latin is what made Spain Espana or Hispania what it is bc the Italians (Romans) Latinized or Romanized the Iberian Peninsula, who then not only Hispanicized, but Latinized the Americas. Hence, the cultural similarities and core elements between Latin Americans and Latin Europeans

I agree with you, ever since I read the ancient map of Iberia Then called “Hispania” by the Romans, I knew there was something TERRIBLY wrong.

And then Hispania was conquered by the Moors and was renamed Al-Andalus (which currently Spain has adopted that name to refer to the southern region of Spain as "Andalucia" since that's where the main stronghold of Islamic rule was located). In fact much of what is considered Spanish culture was introduced by the Moors and their nearly 800 year rule then adopted and adapted by conquering Visgoths

Latino refers to people from a specific geographical region whose languages are of the romance language family or whose lexicon is primarily derived from romance languages.

It's not convenient for the school system to teach all of us history. Like when they took 55 of mexico, us army killed native Americans if California that were assimilated into Hispanic culture, or that the first European to settle in what is today 55 of us were Spaniards that later became Mexican citizens among native of mexico, mixed....

It’s is insignificant in the grand scheme of US history. There’s alot to cover. In Texas they teach about tejanos so California probably does too when they get to California state history. The school system mainly prioritizes important thing like the revolutionary, Civil, and 2 world wars

Interesting indeed, what language did the founders of the town used ? Castillan ? Arpitan (franco-provencal) ? Or maybe a mix of arpitan, french, occitan, piedmontese italian and schweitzer german ?

The majority of my ancestry is from both Portugal and Spain, mostly the Canary Islands (my great grandma was from there), Galicia, and Azores so I'm majority Latino but also Slavic and Celtic too as I have Slovak, Irish, British, and Polish ancestry. And a little bit of Guinean and Native American ancestry too. It's fascinating to dig deep and learn more about Latin America and why people think Latino is a race, even though it's not but rather a mix of two or more

Majority of Latinos are mixed white, Native American, African etc but they're classified as Hispanic/Latino because of what language they speak. The only category we should be classified as is Mixed because that’s what we are, a mix of races not the so called “Latino race”

I'm Latvian and Brazilian, white, and I currently live in America. Many times I've had to take mandatory surveys asking, among other things, if I'm "White/Non-Hispanic or Latin" or "White/Hispanic or Latin"... ugh.

Interesting discussion. I was born and raised in Brazil from a Japanese descent family. Right now, I am a US citizen and I always find amusing to fill out surveys about my race which is very constant here in US. We don't do that in Brazil when we go see doctors or look for jobs. I always identify myself as Asian, because biologically (genetically), I am 100% Japanese (as per genetic test). However, culturally, I would say that I am around 80% Brazilian and therefore, Latino. As a rule, when I fill out surveys here, I think they are asking me about my genetics and not my culture and I answer accordingly. I feel that those surveys are not helpful and descriptive of who I am. Also, I immigrate here with my husband who is Russian. You will never guess this from looking at any survey that I filled out.

@@marinsanchez9587 not exactly, If it is paper based, there are all the options above and you can check as many boxes you want, but not as a subcategory to Latino/Hispanic. It is listed as the subcategory of being American, not Latino/Hispanic. Now, if you are filling online, then you have to chose one of those or if you have more than one background, you can chose others sometimes. Nowadays, everything is online. So, I can only choose one and I normally go with my biological background and not with my cultural one. Although, either way, it would be correct about me.

Im Brazilian, have been living in the US for a few years and this is the best video about this subject I’ve seen on KZread. You covered pretty much everything. Thank you.

For starters, not all Americans are ignorant, only a large majority of us, lol. But I studied Spanish Language & Culture in college and you did good with this one. I will say that when I was in Cartagena, Colombia it seemed that many afro-colombians saw themselves as simply "Colombians" and seemed to identify as both black and latino. I found this really interesting being black from the USA.

But then again you'd be leaving out the people who are descendants of the French, the German, the Polish... And they aren't few! An example would be how a big majority of the Rioplatense population in Argentina descends from Italians. I consider Italian, Spanish, French and to a lesser extent, German immigrants to be the dorsal spine of Argentine culture, and none of them are Iberian besides the Spanish.

Hispanic is made up--it's an American myth. No one outside of the US calls me or refers to me as "Hispanic." I've lived both in Europe and Asia, and all was asked on my applications, was my nationality! As far as Latin/o/a is concerned, that's another term I was rarely called or referred to outside of the US. Just wanted to share my overseas culture shock experience with fellow Masaman fans.

Europe's history have been a succession of rivalries and clashes between feudal kingdoms, later nation-states (or between religions). So people tend to identify as british, german, spanish, french, russian, etc. far more than racially/ethnically. It is especially true in western Europe (never tell a walloon that he's french, especially after football World cup).

Also, Pygmies. There's pretty good genetic evidence that the Eastern and Western Pygmies are two completely different races which evolved similar phenotypes in response to a similar environment. Previously the groups were defined only linguistically. It's also been suggested that the Twa might be a third distinct group that originated recently from Bantus, but I doubt it and haven't seen genetic evidence. Throw in Negritos and you could do an episode about the ecotypes conception of race pushed by Templeton. There's also the Hadza who despite the clicks in their language are a genetically and linguistically unrelated to the other groups. A Subsaharan hunter-gather episode, that's what I want. There's been some really detailed best-fit cluster analysis done on African population.

Thank you, Masaman. I love this video. As someone that is Hispanic/Latino, it really is something else now when I hear the terms spoken. Yes, most fellow Americans think of Hispanic/Latino as a race, including those who are Hispanic/Latino. For a while I would refer to it as an ethnicity/ethnic group, but that is also incorrect, though, race still takes the cake. The biggest reason, I think, why Hispanic/Latino is so ignorantly defined & used is because of the poison that is politics. You also have to factor in the the charged racist past with regard to "white" & "black". The messed up racial definitions continue today, as I mentioned, because of politics. Your videos do a lot of great work, Masaman. Keep up & God bless!

Another very informative video. I found out about some of this as an ESL teacher. A student with a very stereotypical Spanish name was having extreme problems in my elementary ESL class. I asked my most advanced Spanish speaking student if he could help by explaining the grammar to her in Spanish. His answer was that her Spanish was as little as her English because "she's an Indio." I have also discovered that while my Venezuelan students didn't seem to have racist views, some people in other Latin American countries certainly do.

Not all Caucasians are white but all whites are Caucasian. Well, does that include the white Asiatics, like the Siberians, Koreans, Japanese and Chinese? The term you should probably be using is Northern European. No, hang on, that would include the Russians, and I know the Germanics don't be claiming know relations with the Ruskies, even though one is mainly haplogroup R1a and the other R1B🤔. But yeah, there are many "White" Arabs, and Persians, and Middle Easterners in general. If you're skin burns when you've been in the sun for too long then you're white. I was born in Colombia and moved to USA when I was 9, when I arrived I was so confused with the terms "latino" and "hispanic" because I had never heard of them and had always identified myself as Colombian. I don't hate the terms, but I feel like they need to be fixed or we need to have new terms that incorporate a better sense of what we are (I had also identified as mestizo but I knew I could use the term "mixed" in America since that had it's own meaning as well, even though mixed=mestizo)

I agree, I think we should come up with better terms than "Latin America". Personally I've thought that something like "Ibero-America" would be more adequate because let's face it- most people when referring to Latin America are only referring to the Spanish and Portuguese speaking parts of the Americas. A term like "Ibero-America" would also *not* be a racial identifier, it would simply be a linguistic identifier, in the same way "Latin America" is. So you could be of Quechua, Aztec, Italian or German ancestry, but being from a country that speaks Spanish or Portuguese would make you Ibero-American.

You got that right. The term Latino is wrong. First of all it should be LATIN in English and not Latino but this is because a Mexican man called Frank del Olmo wanted to unite all the Spanish-speaking people of the Americas under one label so he chose the wrong "Latino" label instead of using a RACE or Country of origin like Mexican , Colombian, Cuban...or just "Latin American/s". 🙏🏻 finally someone who “gets it”. It’s been a point of frustration for me ever since I immigrated to North America 23 years ago. My first “encounter” with this obsession of classifying people by race and ethnicity and the ludicrous Latino/Hispanic terms was in 1996 when filling out a form at a Florida high school, as my English wasn’t the best back then someone at the registration office was helping me fill it out so when it came to the question about race the secretary had already checked off the box for WHITE then came a question about place of birth, when I responded Brazil she went back to the race question erased the check mark ✅ in the box for WHITE and put a check in the box for HISPANIC 🤣 in reality, no one sees me as anything other than white as I’m as white as white can be and my last name is German but every time I mention I was born in Brazil people seem to panic and say stupid things like I don’t look Brazilian or because of my last name they’ll ask me if I’m part German part Brazilian 😂🤣 when I answer that I’m actually part German part Italian they’ll say things like oh so you’re not really Brazilian 🤬 my answer is always yes I am as Brazilian as any other person born in Brazil I just happen to be born to a German dad and an Italian mother what’s so freaking difficult to understand? As you mention in your video North Americans have no issue understanding the complexities of the demographics in North America why is it so difficult for them to understand that not everything and everyone south of the American/Mexico border the same? Even culturally we’re not the same, I don’t see any similarities between Uruguay and let’s say Guatemala apart from the language being spanish. Is Canada and Jamaica the same because both speak English?!? Yes a big chunk of people in South America has a mixed back ground but so do people in North America and no one lumps them all together with other groups of people who happen to also have been born in North America. There are people in South America who are only native or only Asian or only African or only European and they’re proud of their home countries and their ancestry. I find it very disrespectful when someone shrugs off the things that make who you are based on sheer ignorance. I mean if you’re going to discriminate and label people at least do it right cause as it is it makes North Americans look both racists and stupid. I’ve traveled a lot and have met people from all over, no one else but North Americans seem to obsess so much about these things and get it so wrong in the case of central and South America.

Thank you so much for making this video Masaman. Since I was born in and grew up in the USA with Mexican parents and grandparents the USA’s conception of race and ethnicity has always baffled me. Every time I try to explain my view to my American friends they have almost always treated my view with confusion and suspicion. I think this is mostly due to the heavy politicization race and ethnicity have in the US that it tends to have an obfuscating effect on demographic history. Anytime I try to explain to my northern American friends my views on “Latino/Hispanic” I just send them your videos now lol

Im Chilean, and growing up i never understood the concept of race... for me, people were in a spectrum of colors... some people were a bit lighter or a bit darker, but i never felt a separation of groups based in the color of their skin

I finally understand y in South park: the stick of truth game when I picked latino or Hispanic as my background it said something like "well that's not a race/group/ethnicity". I was so confused at the time. Now I'm a bit less confused and more confused at the same time. If that make sense

I think the term Mestizo fits best for Latin Americans because the definition ( Spanish and Indigenous mixed) covers the majority of the ancestry in most Latin Americans. Obviously, African ethnic groups are usually part of the mix as well. Mestizo just makes sense to me in terms of Latin Americans or hispanoamericanos.

Peruvian Israeli here. I heard in Lima, Peru there had been a small migrant work population imported over a century ago from SE Asia, maybe Indonesia, or somewhere in the Polynesian area. Obviously the Aztecs weren't Latin American, as Latin America wasn't a thing back then. But if an indigenous person from a Latin American country say they're latino, they're right, by virtue of them being from a Latin American country. Latin American is not a race, anyone of any race can be Latino. If you're talking about Indigenous people of the US, no they're not Latino but I can see why they'd argue they are. Since many Latin Americans have considerable indigenous ancestry I see the link. Genetically there is a link between native Americans of the US and many Latinos.

Masaman, are you familiar with GEDmatch genetic calculators? According to GEDmatch, Spanish and Portuguese dedicate 50% of their autosomal DNA to non Mediterranean/non Africa/non Asian markers, mostly Celtic with some Germanic. In comparison, English and North Germans have 75% non Mediterranean autosomal DNA. Interestingly, in southern Europe, only the North of Italy has 50% non Mediterranean DNA, with the Central and South of Italy as well as Greece having about 25-35% non Mediterranean DNA. With Spain and Portugal being litterally half Mediterranid and half Celtic/Germanic, should it even be considered Southern Europe? Also why is it that northern Italy, being far more geographically north and closer to France and Germany, not have more non Mediterranean DNA like its cousins south in Spain and Portugal? The answer is in the history of Iberia,, but since you are the genius video maker, please make a video about this!

Visigoths, Vandals, and Suevi are northern Germanic peoples originally from Modern Day Sweden and Germany they migrated to Eastern Europe then Migrated into Iberia (Spain and Portugal) (also took the Alans an Iranian people with them) towards the end of the Western Roman Empire. Many words like Queso (Keez) or Alto (Halt) come from Germanic origins some names too like Enrique (Heinrich, Henry) Guillermo (Wilhelm, William) Adolfo (Adolf) Griselda and even the directions of Norte/North, Sur/South, Este/East and Oeste/West are Germanic in origins opposed to Latin directions like Oriente and Occidente.

@@ntrakstudio The Goths (Visigoths) are supposedly originally Southern Sweden like gotland and Vastergotland, the Suevi are thought to be Northern Swedish or Swiss and Vandal/Wends are thought to be from Northeastern Germany and Modern Day Poland. So there is definitely some Germanic blood in Spanish or Portuguese peoples.

Some people think I am rediculous to claim White in the Racial Census, even though my mother and father were born in Portugal and genetic tests show I am 98% European. I guess people cannot get over the preconceived notion that White = Blond hair and blue eyes and dark hair, eyes, and medium brown skin is Hispanic/Latino, wrong!

The thing about Honduras is that the islands over there are mostly of people of British descent. They even still speak English over there too. So it's kinda confusing.

I am of Cuban ancestry (mestizo) and born and raised in Miami which obviously has a huge "latino" population. I agree 100% with what you're saying and I've been saying this stuff almost all my life. I've gotten so much opposition and even hatred from other "Latino" people who think that either I'm wrong, stupid or ashamed of my heritage.

Well done! I want to give some of my story as I find it a fascinating case study and I want to hear your input (also this will practically be a novel so have fun). I was born in a primarily Hispanic area of the United States and by that I mean that if you wanted you could live in said area and never speak a word of English if you wished. My mother, who lived in Mexico for a while and spoke fluent Spanish (and I know many are a little skeptical but she spoke what sounded like native speaker Spanish it was bizarre) and was an elementary school teacher for Spanish speaking students- as in she taught in Spanish. So when I was born she only ever spoke to me in Spanish and spent a long long time making sure I was raised and socialized amongst Spanish speaking people. She volunteered as a teacher with a playgroup of specifically native Spanish speaking parents and their kids and I played with their kids. I think it’s important to note now that I am white- Protestant, northwest European, pretty standard- so I stuck out. But I didn’t know anything other than speaking Spanish. It was only later, after I started elementary school at an immersion school, that I learned that a white blonde haired blue eyed Spanish speaking native was not “normal”. My class was split up into two groups: Spanish speaking “Latino people” and English speaking Spanish ignorant white people. And then there was me. And that’s always been me. I know there are other white Hispanics but most of them trace ancestry back to a latinamerican country or Spain, but I don’t. Sometimes I wonder where this leaves me. I’m not Latino, not at all, but I meet a lot of the criteria for Hispanic. Does anyone else have an experience like this or have a name for people like me? I’m just curious!

Back in elementary school we used to identify people just as "Mexican" or "not Mexican" and I remember in like 3rd grade I got paired up with this guy who's last name was "Munoz" and I was looking around the class for like 5 minutes when the whitest kid in the room came up to me. If you want to see more people like you, look at North of Spain and Portugal those places were heavily colonized by Germanics tribes like suevos And Visigoths. It's weird for me as a white Brazilian watch American movies because Everytime they showed a Latino, they show someone who look much more like native Americans or middle Easterners than a Latino. I truly believe it's a big shock to the average American, when they travel to Mexico and see the movies make by the progressive hoolywood was showing a stereotype the all Time. I'm Brazilian from German, Azorean and Polish roots. So, I'm Caucasian, I'm not related to African or amerindian heritage. But I'm Latin, coz I was born and raised in Latin America (state of Rio Grande do Sul where the vast majority of people are white from German, Azorean, Polish and Italian heritage). For me, it's quite clear I'm not Hispanic. This is laughable. I'm Latin American, this is quite obvious (duh...) and white from European roots. But I don't feel connections of any kind with Cubans, Mexicans, Belizeans or Bolivians. It's like oil and water. I'm Brazilian. This "Latino race" is a stupid thing that only exists in the crazy world of the USA.

Great video as allways masaman! Im a latin american whith nordic, jewish, german, polish, spanish and italian descend. Despite this i fully embrace the latin american identy to describe miself over my national identity (argentinean) for my the latin american identity has more to do with a social condition of living in a region with similar socio-economics problems, cultural hierachys and same geo-political orientation than race or ethnicity

Great video as always! I've often considered this question "what is Hispanic/Latino". I'm white, completely German background, but speak Spanish fluently, so this has been on my mind for most of the past 30-odd bilingual/bi-cultural years. 1) You should do a whole video on the Philippines. The Philippines was under Spanish colonial control for 377 years. Although it wasn't as mixed as the Americas, still there was a lot of intermixing over the centuries. There is a lot of Spanish vocabulary in Tegalog and Ilocano, as well as in the other languages spoken in the south of the archipelago. The surnames are quite often Spanish in origin. There was always major amounts of sea traffic between the ports of Manila and Acapulco , New Spain (Mexico), so I'm sure there are folks in the Acapulco who might not even be aware of their Filipino ancestry! 2) I have many Argentinian friends, some with deep roots in Argentina, others of more recent arrival. They all identify as being Argentinian, regardless of ethnic background. If, for example, a person is born in Argentina but ALL their ancestry comes from the Urkaine, or Switzerland, are they considered "Latino"? (a confusion when filling out a US census form, for sure). 3) Very distant relatives with my same surname are Brazilians, in the south. They know all their ancestors are German of some variety. Would they be "Latinos"? If one doesn't fit the precise box of Latino being of Spanish ancestry in some way or another, it then becomes very confusing, no? Keep up these fascinating videos!

My Filipino grandfather was born when the Philippines was still a Spanish colony. He was a fluent Spanish speaker since Spanish was then an official language. Would he be considered a Hispanic? Incidentally, his uncle became the first Philippine president who started the Philippine revolution against Spain in 1898 and later on started the Philippine American war in 1899. When the Philippines became an American colony, his uncle sent my grandfather to study at the University of Southern California (USC) here in Los Angeles where he graduated with a law degree in 1915. He went back to the Philippines and became a banker. He was a 32 degree Mason (Scottish Rite) when he passed away in 1973.

as a "latino", I love being stereotyped by most people in canada and us as with traits that actually don't apply to argentines, and especially to my province's people, in general sad, introverted because of the mountains and the temperate-cold climate. they think I'm "caliente", I dance salsa, I arrive late and a large etcetera. actually, I laugh often because of such comments.

Latino is most likely derived from the Spanish "latinoamericano". Latino is not extended to cover "latin" languages but only covers people who speak Iberian languages: Spanish and Portuguese in the Americas.

How is it racist? Latinos are not a race. Italians are not a race. How is it culture appropriation? Latinos all speak a dialect of Spanish or Portuguese but all have cultures that vary from each other.

Okay my mom is spanish and my dad is half german and half czech. I lived my first eight years in spain, but now in germany. My mom has black hair, black eyes and her skin tone is "more brown". My skin tone is white and have a "slavic" appearence. What am I in the U.S? Hispanic? Caucasian?

hispanics are also white and part of the caucasian race. they are something called ``darker white ppl`` for instance, Im from north europe, Norway-. we are much whiter than ppl in the south, cuz we have colder weather, snow.. etc

I'm mexican and i'm a proud Latino.Hispanic is someone from Spain.If someone is born in the Continent of América, you become a citizen of the Continent of América.

I am German, my family or ancestors got to Guatemala in 1840. in Guatemala is hardly to find Latino or Hispanic blood. because there are a lot indigenous around, and the only whites of Guatemala are not true Hispanics neither true Latinos. The whites in Guatemala to be exact are Germans at most .. but we are called as Latinos. when we are not...actually! but that is the culture in Latin America.
