His Name Is Gizmo: Our Overland Expedition Vehicle Build - Part 1

This is the first video in a series of videos where we looked back objectively and retrospectively at the building of Gizmo our Overland Expedition Vehicle. We take a look at Gizmo's current configuration as a reference point for future videos in this series.
In future videos, we're looking back objectively and retrospectively starting at the beginning of Gizmo's build stages to see our journey over the last 5 years. Our goal is to share our experiences, choices, decisions, and rational in order to educate, motivate and empower new overlanders or others looking for ideas with there own vehicles.

Just happened upon your video, love the detail of the build and setup, especially the build! We just took a 10,000 mile trip in our Jeep (just a factory, stock Jeep Sahara) throughout the west, southwest! We are much older than you folks and did not venture out on to many of the trails that many of the overlanders like yourself do, but enjoying watching folks like yourself venture into areas we are not set up to go. Look forward to up coming episodes. Great job, thank you!

Hello mark! Thanks for putting these videos together. I like your build as your setup is very similar to mine. I’ve got a 2015 JKUR HR on a 3.5 metal cloak lift. Have a warn zeon 12s mounted in the bumper. Went with the 12 because I ended up buying an “into the wild” Boreas XT trailer. It really looks like you have had the time to refine your load out! I admire your organization skills. It’s extremely easy for things to get messy if you are not organized like yourself. If you ever end up in the NW (Washington state) let me know! Safe travels! 👍

Very helpful video ! The most informative overland video I've seen. Love the way you listed out all the mods you've done to your rig. Thank you so much for sharing! Just a question. Why do you choose to overland or wheeling by yourself ? Must be very comfortable doing so and/or choosing your routes very carefully without much difficult terrain I hope.

That was a really great overview of your camping system Mark. I really love how modular the whole thing is with those Pelican cases. You really seem to have thought through every aspect of it - thank you for sharing! My favorite learnings were the value of the rock lights - where is the switch for those? Do you ever wish you had installed the red instead of the white ones? Finally, do you have any idea of how much the jeep weighs loaded up? You look like you may be pushing the payload.

You should watch the whole series and there is one more video coming in the future that goes into the AEV 3 1/3 dual sport. There are several videos ahead of it in the Que a head of it. In part one, you see Gizmo at full load in its current config. with 15 gals water, almost full gas tank, and 10 gals extra fuel in tire carrier tank. 1 Wife and 10 days for food! The key is it's everything, it's all about the choices. The 6 most important parts, In order, are 1) AEV 3 1/2" dual sport 2) Remove the rear seats 3) Don't use a drawer system 4) The rear platform as I have it built 5) Change Rubicon Rock sliders to Teraflex aluminum sliders 6) don't use 17" tires. If all else fails put the wife on a Diet!
