    I so much hope that the show really explores all this philosophical stuff from The Amber Spyglass. I agree with you that the primary characters are clearly Will and Lyra, but the showrunners have proven in the previous seasons that they are interested in the backstory and want to stay very faithful to the books. They could easily have extra scenes with other characters (Mrs Coulter, Asriel, Balthamos & Baruch, Xaphania, Seraphina...) like they already did with Mrs Coulter and Boreal for example, and bring up the backstory through them. I am hopeful that we'll see most of the material from the book on screen. One way or another, it'll surely be amazing and I can't wait!!

    If you read the Nag Hammadi Library, Apocryphon of John and the Hypostasis of the Archons, among other books in it. The authority begins to make sense as god (lower case g) known as Yaldabaoth, which was the creator of the material plane. Either out of malice or ignorance it took itself to be the only part of god and therefor the only god. Also known to some gnostic sects as Saklas or Samael, depending if you go off of the Valentinian flavor or the Sethian flavor of gnosticism. Also known to some as the Demiurge. The Magesterium seems to worship the demiurge, while Lyra and Azrael (either unconsciously or consciously) are trying to set things in motion to have the rest of the world be made aware to the existence of the Monad (the Unknowable, Ineffable, True God) . A lot of gnostic parallels in the show. I don't know why they called the Authority Metatron though that doesn't seem to track with the rest of the codexes but maybe because more people are aware of Metatron in popular culture.

    There were two Metatrons. One was the primordial angel that gave Enoch the grand tour. The other was the ascended Enoch who replaced the former. Being that some of the source material was used by the Gnostics, it’s also possible that the Authority is the Demiurge or that he combined the two.

    In the books the Authority is God. But God have always lied pretending he was the Creator of all things, when he was actually just the first Angel. Authority is just the name that he receives in Lyra's world.

    I think this is an AU where it was Lucifer that cast out the loyalists, not the other way around. Then Lucificer grounded God and made him into the Dust. EDIT Turns out I was only 50% correct. The Dust IS God, and the Authority i.e. the HDM's version of Lucifer was "condensed" from the Dust. And his reason for wanting to rule the other angels and hence all of creation essentially boils down to "I was the first made, so I should be in charge, eugh!😫"

  • @KingLofiOne
    @KingLofiOne4 ай бұрын

    "The Authority in their world is basically God" No "in their world" about it. HDM is about parallel worlds, but the Authority comes from the world of the Angels, of which there's only one. The Authority is the Abrahamitic God and every major deity worshipped across the multiverse.

    Your dodging the urge to compare our god. But it's kind of hard not to see the parallel sometime, then again is it a rouge or a piece of bacteria place to question your omnipotence as a person is unlimited to a piece of bacteria..... potentially, as we are to God maybe somewhat similar. He's the creator of the world and therefore the rules and. Care for the author of good.... Author of evil. . .

    It's certainly a great thing to contemplate; what does it mean to be 'God' (if by that term we mean the judeo-christian interpretation of such a being) in relation to mere mortals? Is morality objective? These are questions that have plagued some of the greatest philosophers and theologians of history. It's great when we get a series such as 'His Dark Materials' that inspires us to probe these philosophical areas!

    Honestamente, his Dark materials não é tão ateísta quanto muitos alegam. Tá certo que o livro tem temas claramente anticatolicos /dogmas e uma crítica direta a religião, mas o universo de Pullman tem o seu próprio conceito místico e teológico com uma ótica mais panteísta que teista. Eu explico, no multiverso de Pullman o PÓ (ou matéria escura, como também é chamado) é uma energia cósmica que sustenta e move toda a vida de todos os universos, é a força celestial que auxiliou o processo de evolução da vida em todo multiverso. É uma energia além do material (que é uma ideia rejeitada pelo ateísmo). Foi o pó que criou o primeiro anjo que se intitulou ser Deus e a autoridade suprema de todos os outros anjos. Para o magistério o pó é visto como o pecado original, porque, quando descobriram que o pó só é atraído para pessoas mais velhas e não para crianças, eles logo associaram ao pecado que não é atraído para crianças. O pó não é uma entidade consciente, mas é a energia que dá vida a tudo, os dogmas e a visão religiosa que se dá ao pó é visto como a causa do mundo de Lyra ser uma distopia teocrática. A trilogia de Pullman é que nem Matrix, ela defende essa ideia de questionar os status quoll, conhecer a verdade além das crenças da nossa zona de conforto, defender o livre arbítrio e, também, experimentar algo novo sem medo de julgamentos. O magistério e o equivalente a igreja católica na época da inquisição, tem medo do que é diferente e proíbe as pessoas de conhecerem o desconhecido e considerarem pecado. A visão religiosa compromete a real beleza do mundo além dos dogmas. O pó é uma energia divina mas sem consciência (ideia panteísta). A religião que atribui sentido além desse tende a impor essa visão cosmo universal para os outros e passa a oprimir quem discorda, e é aí que ela se torna a vilã. A visão do livre é cosmo e o místico separado da religião que leva ao fanatismo se for dominada por fanáticos.
