Hipac - The lost tape : Pioneer's forgotten 1970s cassette rival

Ғылым және технология

Hipac is the pre-recorded tape format that history forgot, so it's time to fix that.

FAQs etc.
Firstly - a few Japanese speakers have confirmed my pronunciation of Hipac is correct...so that’s good news.
Q) What's that clock/youtube counter on the shelf
A) This • Review: LaMetric Time ...
More info about the machine and the purpose of the case....
It seems unlikely it would be a salesman's sample (as has been suggested by quite a few) as there would be little need for a 12V power connector or even a model number for something the public couldn't buy. Additionally - there's that chap on youtube (linked above) with a different model - you'd only need one design of this case for demo purposes.
Now as far as the aerial...you'll see some leaf spring connectors on the left of the inside of the machine at one point when it's open - it seems very likely that these are there to connect to contacts on a special radio cartridge that could be inserted in the machine to provide it with radio reception capabilities. Personal stereos of the 80s re-used this idea, with a number of machines coming with radio cassette that you put in the machine when you wanted to listen to the radio. - Here's an example of a similar idea for the 8-track swling.com/blog/2017/06/myste...
Q) Could the screw that's holding the player in place just have been used for transportation - like when you buy a washing machine, record player etc.
A) I think that's unlikely, I've never found a transportation screw in any device that required disassembly of the unit to remove - they are usually on the bottom and can be removed and reinserted easily. Again I think this was screwed in - so that the deck and holder could be sold as one complete unit in order to sell off the unsold Hipac player stocks (probably very cheaply).
Q) Where did you get the belts?
A) Here ebay.to/2k8jEx9
Q) What's the music playing that starts at 06:54
A) Étude Op. 10, No. 3 (Chopin)

there used to be a law (not sure which countries, probably several) that meant all in-car radios would require a separate license, making them more expensive and prohibitive to install. Manufacturers got around this by making the in-car radios and casette players 'removable'. Hence the pull-out handle and the runners. The reasoning being (and apparently legally sufficient) was that any radio/casette license that the owner of the car had would apply to it already as their own personal machine. The fact that you could dock it into a car was just a handy extra. this way, there was no need to pay an extra license. so there you go, music companies and governments screwing people over for extra royalties has been a thing for decades.

@Jasper Janssen, I'm not sure what the rational was. Perhaps it was just to simplify things for the consumer. "Power goes here". No need to think if this is "wall power" or from an inverter, or 12V battery or from a battery eliminator. The cord used took care of that.

By the way, the correct pronunciation is "hai-pac", as confirmed by how the name is spelled in Japanese: ハイパック, read as "Haipakku" (and even searching the original Japanese ハイパック name on Google images gives almost no result for this format, but it mostly brings up pictures of plastic Tupperware-like boxes by an eponymous Japanese packaging company, and of an eponymous delivery van by Isuzu)

If you mean this character: "ッ" - this character has two usages in the Japanese writing system. If written big, "ツ", it is the "tsu" syllable, but if it is written small, "ッ", it is used to double the consonant of the next syllable. Let's take this device's name: ハイパック . The syllables' spelling is the following: ハ = ha; イ = i; パ = pa; ク = "ku". The ッ character indicates that the "k" in "ku" has to be doubled, "kku". Also, this name is written in the katakana syllabary, used for writing foreign, non-japanese words. There is also the hiragana syllabary, used for writing proper Japanese words. In this case, the "tsu" syllable is written "つ", both big and small and with the same purpose as above. ^_^

DrNazoo1983 wow so i feel rather basic or thinking it would mean something like a smile haha. That just goes to show linguistics can manifest in a million different ways and have different meanings for everyone. I often wonder when the originators of modern languages began to transition from a pictoral symbol based system to a more modern usage of random shaped symbols that are more specific and refined, and what could be a holdover from that previous era. For some reason us westerners tend to think english is the most advanced system of language but something tells me thats not even remotely true, even though im not fluent in amy other language. Thanks for your input!

Indeed, ideograms based languages like Japanese and Chinese are very advanced, because instead of words they literally use drawings to describe words, and simple yet exhaustive drawings at that, and us humans are more comfortable looking at figures instead of written words, for drawings instantaneously describe something to us, instead of a potentially time consuming readout. I wonder if this is why Chinese and Japanese people can get so creative, because they are constantly surrounded by drawings. I guess it all started with those pictographs written in caves in prehistoric times, ans now some languages have Latin characters, Cyrillic characters, characters with lots of accents (Vietnamese or Slavic languages) and of course ideograms. This variety is fascinating! Anyway, thank you for the answer! Also, never be afraid of asking "stupid" questions, or questions in general for that matter. Being curious about the world surrounding us is a very important thing, because having a rich and varied knowledge helps you living better. And BTW, as they say here in Italy, "asking is legit, answering is courtesy" :D Have a good day!!

Hi there, when i first saw the case for this it reminded me of non fixed cubby boxes, which were storage boxes between the two front seats in some larger cars: - the more you look at the item the more you could see it in a car, as you showed it has a car battery power lead for running it off the cars battery, as well as internal batteries so you could take it out once you had reached your picnic destination ? and the speakers would mean that people sitting in the rear of the car could also enjoy the music, even the way the lid access opened was like some fixed cubby boxes, and allow the driver access to the player, the fixing screw would possibly be required to keep the unit in place and connected if the car was travelling over slightly rough road surfaces ? just a thought ! see what you think. Many thanks, regards Simon.

Techmoan deserves respect for his detailed investigation. There's another KZread guy, who goes by the name of 'Cool Hard Logic', who is equally detailed in his work on cosmology. In fact, I would recommend Cool Hard Logic as psychotherapy for anyone suffering from a bout of irrational belief syndrome :-)

You might be on to something, but not like you think. In the 70's they had FM converters so you could listen to FM on your AM car radio. You'd plug the cars antenna into the converter than the converter into the antenna port on the radio. I really don' think that's what was going on here, but it's possible the thing was set up to connect to an AM car radio just like the FM converters were.

I bet that is going straight into the permanent collection. What a beauty. Both the outside finishing work, and the mechanics on the inside. Everything is made to last. Nothing of that planned obsolescence bull going on here. Amazing! Personal highpoints; -the battery pack. Yeah that is just classy. Wow. -The PCB layout. Don't see much handtaped pcb layouts anymore (well, defiunitely not the nicely rounded ones). -The all metal internals. Yes. This speaks to me on an almost spiritual level. Wear resistance. Maintainability. Ruggedness. Love it! Thanks for sharing, always a pleasure seeing your video's pop up in my subfeed!

I grew up in the 80s/90s and didn't even know this existed but 30 years on this was actually so intriguing to watch! In today's world of tech packed into small/slim chassis nothing actually beats the complexity and build of old electronics. They had to create within their limitations but doing so create some very interesting stuff!
