Wow! A filmed version that shows why Made In Japan is the greatest live album ever made!!! Having been pulverized by them the year after this (the Burn/Mark III lineup), this song was absolutely stupifying. And yes, live no song was ever the same.

On Keyboards, the late great Jon Lord.. there are a few bands that feature keys, but few to touch Jon...& the enigma Ritchie Blackmore on guitar.. Purple loved to improvise live & i can guarantee every live performance of this you can find will be different .. what a band!.. another Purple suggestion? try "Lazy" ... studio, excellent... live, more of the same

When I seen this live the light show on the drum solos was mind blowing indoors. Seen 2 shows, 1 in 1 out in 2018. Had to see a 2nd show cause i couldnt make up my mind what i saw. Think they blew Priest off the stage 1st time. 2nd was equally killer shows indoors.

The song is not about drugs.when this song was written it was the beginning of the space-age.. and at the same time there used to be a cartoon drawing of a guy with a big foot called keep on Truckin and they combined that with the space theme.. also deep purple was not a drug band they were a drinking band.. none of the members of this lineup did any kind of drugs.. and you mentioned you liked the range of the singer you did listen to child in time live he had great in that one..

The name Space Truckin’ comes from two things that were trending at the time: in 1972 the Apollo missions were still sending people to the Moon, and everybody felt they were on the “Space Age”; and there was a cartoon at the time that said “keep on truckin’” and was very popular

According to the members of the band they were definitely drinkers but not into drugs. Space truckin was a reflection was a reflection of newly manned space travel at the time. Also the taken from an advertising logo of the time period "Keep on truckin"

Most 70s rock bands did solos live. Mainly guitar solos but keyboard and drum solos were common too. Keyboards seemed to go out of fashion with rock bands after the 70s. Floyd, Zeppelin, Yes, ELP and, of course, Deep Purple all had great keyboard players and regularly featured keyboard solos. It was virtually mandatory to have at least one extended drum solo and several short ones, in every rock concert.

Andrew Lloyd Webber wanted him to take the role, in the West End but Gillan preferred to stay with rock music. He's one of the leading candidates for GOAT, when it comes to rock vocalists. His style was hugely influential and basically became the blueprint for heavy metal vocals. At his peak he was in a league of his own. Especially re' power, range and control.
