January 75 I'm in Hong Kong on holidays with my parents....it's my 12th birthday. My parents took me to a record store and said pick out any record you want. It happened to be Deep Purple 'Made in Japan.' I recognized "Smoke on the Water" because I'd obviously heard it before. I'll never forget that birthday.

Deep Purple is probably the best live band on Earth. Best band in terms of musicianship. All members are top notch musicians.

Igual, en 1974-75 escuché por primera vez Fireball y desde entonces mi camino ha sido el HM y el HR, he visto 3 veces a Deep Purple, 2 veces a Rainbow y 1 Blackmore's Night, y hoy hay una banda femenina japonésa con el mismo talento que ellos y lo mejor que hay en directo, es un Heavy diferente, pero que virtuosismo tienen las 5 chicas

Unfortunately, the keyboard player (John Lord) died about 10 years ago. All the other band members are still alive. Three of the band still play in the band, Ian Gillan, Ian Paice and Roger Glover.

It was back in the day when bands went on stage and played without the benefit of BIG SCREENS and MILLIONS of moving lights. They band went out and gave everything they had.

I watched lately a few video's on youtube of a grey haired Jon Lord (1941-2012) playing more classical and jazzy tunes, and I was really amazed by his eloquent performances. Great musician.

Sometimes I feel jealous of people who discover Deep Purple for the first time, my journey began in 1970 abd your reaction like a light coming on and listening and saying wow, its now 50+ yrs and i still cant get over of the power and talent, and John Lord on hammond organ sadly no longer with us was one of the best enjoy the music

You were right when you said he (Jon Lord) would never play the same thing again. Those days the music was not run like clockwork by a computer. You felt it and played it from your heart and that was how the people heard it. I know. At a very lot lower level I was doing the same and I can tell you the freedom to jam out is a wonderful feeling right down to your toes.

The audience had never seen anything like Deep Purple.

My brother give me Deep purple Machine head album for my 16 years in 1973 , I didn't know them , it's one of my all time favorite band , thank you always to my brother .i so happy to have lived this era

This band were my entry to rock (and subsequently metal) . When I heard Black Night for the first time , everything changed ( for the better). I always found their albums good, but it is live on stage that they really came to life. In effect (imo) an improve jazz rock band. No two live shows were the same. As others have said, their musicianship gave them the scope to freestyle. With various hand signals to move to next part etc, they went with the flow on any given evening. I was fortunate to see them (and their offshoots - Gillan, Rainbow, Whitesnake et al). But Purple (mark 2) will forever have a special place in my heart and on my playlist. As always I love your reaction ❤

You just need to convince spencer he needs a piano organ thing, a smoke machine, flares and the desire to kick his guitar around the stage. Makes trex vid look calm and understated

More of my life on KZread... Sneaking into a campus too catch band's. Hot Tuna was a favorite. Then there were the concerts in the parks... It was worth losing my hearing through most of the early 80s...

I grew up with them, their posters glued to my bedroom walls to the utter desperation of my mom. They were part of most of the 'pop festivals' back then, early to mid-seventies. I went to about 20 of them. Those were the days of carefree living. And it was good.

I honestly think you should have been born in Europe in the mid 60s and then grew up with this stuff. It was on the radio and back then we had popular festivals, uk and Europe. Great thing is you are experiencing it now. Awesome music never dates. Embrace the journey lol

1973 just started working in hell (a factory ) going to see Sabbath and Purple .On top of that my football team Sunderland took me on a wonderful journey by winning the F.A. Cup.Great memories , apart from working in hell .

A month later the singer and the bass player did their last show with the band and a new chapter started. And this was a really short version of the song, sometimes they extended it to 30 minutes :-)

I remember seeing my Dad take the LP from the sleeve of the album 'Machine Head'. Tracks like 'Lazy', 'Highway Star' and this one are part of my childhood. Great memories Daniel. Cheers!!

In 1974 I was 18 years old and living in Denver Colorado and the first concert I went to was Deep Purple my favorite band at the time, I had tickets for the 1973 tour, but the tour was postponed for a year because the lead singer Ian Gillan left the band and was replaced by David Coverdale. The band came back in 1974, It was worth the wait. My favorite Purple song has to be "Highway Star" Live from Made In Japan LP, It still kicks Ass!

Jon Lord was quite gentle with his keyboards - compared, that is, with Keith Emerson. Keith was known to stab his keyboards with daggers just so that he could hold a note. Think you'd like Emerson, Lake & Palmer playing "Knife Edge" on Beat Club on 1970. Keith vaults over one of his keyboards and then starts playing it backwards. Incidentally, once you've visited the Beat Club youtube channel you might never get out. It was a German TV programme and nearly EVERYBODY played there: Yes, Caravan, Renaissance (original line up), Van der Graaf Generator, Curved Air, Jethro Tull, Deep Purple, Procol Harum, Steamhammer, Black Sabbath, T Rex, King Crimson, Hendrix, Steppenwolf, Alice Cooper, The Moody Blues, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Fotheringay, Cream, etc, etc, etc.

I/m selling all my vinyl to a dealer next week. I can't carry it around anymore. This is one of them. I hope they take it.

Just think how good they could have been if they had had the unity, the comraderie, affection Zeppelin had... even so, utterly astounding live.

Funny how your always saying your late. Better late than never. You might find this interesting, as much as we loved our bands and music in the 60's and 70's we didn't have a clue what some of them looked like because we didn't have internet and lord knows they would not be on television like now. If you were lucky you might see a picture in a magazine. That is why albums were so wonderful. First the sound was amazing and the bonus was getting to open those beautiful album covers and see the band members and get to read bio's and lyric's. Opening an album was like opening a gift full of surprises. Oh how I miss those days. Peace my friend!

Absolutely! I saw the line up with Coverdale a few years later and they were good but they couldn't hold a candle to this performance.

Great vid of DP; if you want an even more chaotic performance you must see their Live Mandrake Root (Live, London, 1970). Blackmore just outperforms what you have just seen.

That was Deep Purple's best formation in my mind. Ian Paice, Roger Glover, Ian Gillan, Jon Lord and Richie Blackmore are my favorites members ever. In addition to Led Zeppelin, the best metal groups of their time. Yes, one would like to include Black Sabbath, but at that time they were more associated with the dark-death scene and of course they were the first there. Best wishes @all from germany

Funny you should reference Jesus, Ian Gillan sang the "Jesus" part in "JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR". Check out the song "GETHSEMANE" . Maybe he was in town and stopped by to see him perform.

That ghost was a roadie. And that is indeed a Hammond organ, not a piano. By the way, I think the people who put on this concert for TV cut out a bunch of the song, including most of Blackmore's solo. You can tell if you compare it to the live version from Made In Japan. In any event, the energy certainly comes through here, which is ultimately important.

So many good songs this ban is phenomenal I grew up with this band and you just scratched the surface. Still have to check out the live version of lazy but play it live in Copenhagen get see Richie play the guitar more, the organ player John Lord the name tells you at all complete royalty.

I am new to your channel and have subscribed. Yes, Smoke on the Water is Deep Purple's signature song but you will discover along the way there is SOOOOO much more to this band. Their landmark 1970 album In Rock is a rabbit hole in itself. The masterpiece Child In Time is a must. The guitar solo on the studio version is much better than the live video version IMHO. Songs like Speed King, Black Knight and Hard Loving Man are a must. A must watch is the live in London 1970 video of Mandrake Root. Machine Head is one of the best albums of all (Highway Star, Space Truckin, Lazy). Jon Lord's organ solos are as meaty as any guitar solo. In 1974, David Coverdale (Whitesnake) replaced Ian Gillan on vocals. Burn is another song worth checking out as well as their 1975 Come Taste The Band album. They disbanded in 76 and Richie Blackmore formed Rainbow in 1975 with Ronnie James Dio while Coverdale formed Whitesnake. Deep reunited in 1984 and released Perfect Strangers. Excellent reaction too by the way.👍

Tommy Bolin is the guitarist that replaced Blackmore in Purple for the Come Taste The Band album. Check out the song Post Toastee from his Private Eyes album. Great jam
