Hello RikaShae ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me. Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Wacken Open Air 2013, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience. About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners. Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory): " Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland. Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition. Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her. There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps. I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol " For an extended set of suggestion (with links), I posted 2 huge comments in the community tab in my main YT channel - unfortunately the links are not allowed in your comments, but I bet you'll find it. 🤘

If you want lyrics, turn on the CC. One song in 5 or 6 movements. Like a movie score or classical composition. Yes there is a backing track on many Nightwish songs. Nightwish is still going strong. A Finnish band with a Dutch singer. There are so many great songs from Nightwish. Floor Jansen also has a solo career where she sings more pop style with her own twist.

Nightwish Army South Germany Division (A cloud of dust rises on the horizon, a faint roar and pounding slowly grows louder...Be prepared: Here it comes - the Nightwish Army) Hello RikaShae ...Our Boss, Commander-in-Chief and General of the Nightwish Army Gabriel Bardac has already told you the most important things. It only remains for me to say a warm welcome to the wonderful world of symphonic metal and at the same time welcome as a new recruit to the ranks of the Nightwish Army. You've just seen and heard her, who is named by her fans worldwide in the sum of her honorifics in hundreds of React videos: This is Our Majesty Floor Jansen, First of her Name, Goddess of the Valkyrs, Highly Queen of the Vikings, THE Lady of Nightwish, the House Band of the Gods of Asgard, Chosen Ones of Odin ,Protector of our Metal Realm Long may she reign She raises her hand and commands an 80k+ crowd with her incredible presence and power. Just with a wave of her hand. A member of the Nightwish Army once said: The old gods of Asgard sent Floor Jansen down from the heavenly heights as their gift to Nightwish. They sent them armed with a sword in one hand and a microphone in the other. And a little warning in advance: once you've walked through the entrance to this rabbit hole, you'll stay here...there's no exit. There is nothing more to say about this Greetings from Germany the lady P.S. : Another Tip for you: Epica feat. Floor Jansen - Sancta Terra And by the way...Wacken is a small village with around 1,800 residents. It is located approximately 80 km northwest of Hamburg in northern Germany. Once a year it becomes the site of one of the largest metal festivals in Europe. Then around 80 - 90,000 metal fans come to this small village. And then things really go off there for three days.

Welcome to the world of symphonic metal and Nightwish. The band is from Finland , formed in 1996. 3rd and current lead singer ,Floor Jansen (Yan-sen) is Dutch. Yes , they are still together, currently recording their 10th studio album. This song is from their 2004 album, Once. The 5th and final with original lead singer Tarja (Tar-ya) Turunen. Floor had only been with the band about 10 months here at Wacken, having taken over mid tour. The bassist seen here is Marko Hietala, quite sure that is who your requester was talking about as the other singer. He sang backing and co-lead on a lot of songs, and lead on a few. Unfortunately he decided to leave the band in 2021 after 20 years. Keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen is the mastermind, writing 90-95% of the songs and music. That is just decoration around 3 Korg keyboards. It is a tribute to Finish composer ,Jean Sibelius, and made to resemble the Sibelius monument in Helsinki. Yes , backing tracks for the orchestra and chorus you hear. Recorded with the London Philharmonic, London Metro Voices choir, and Young musicians choir of London. Romanticide and Ghost River, both from this concert, are 2 songs you can hear Marko and Floor singing together.

No idiocy involved! 🤣 Almost everyone assumes it is a pipe organ at first! ... Yes, they use a backing track. It is the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the Metro Voices of London choir. Tuomas (keyboardist, maestro, and poet) scores the orchestra music which are arranged by Pip Williams, well-known for his work with some other great artists known in the U.S. market. The LPO and the MV choir record their tracks in studio especially for Nightwish. It would be prohibitively expensive to drag a full, big name orchestra around on a world tour that touched 34 countries in well over 100 venues, ye the symphonic orchestra is indispensable from their music. So they solve this difficulty by using the backing tracks. Welcome to the Nightwish Army! I'm sure you will enjoy this very deep and very beautiful rabbit hole!@@RikaShae

Toumas does play some of it with the keys, though. You're in for one heck of a journey! As others will probably tell you, this band is by far one of the best live bands in the world. Their studio and music video stuff is great, but the live performances are what set them apart from so many other bands. They sound better live than the others sound after weeks in a studio. I finally had the privilege of seeing them live in Albany, NY in 2018. It was an amazing and almost surreal experience. The performance was perfect, as they usually are. The hour and 45 minutes felt like 30 minutes. Enjoy the trip! The general (Gabriel) should be along soon with more details. Have fun!

The vocals you were confused about understanding in the beginning are sung in a predominantly classical style, similar to opera, and a technique called vowel modification is often used by skilled singers. Phrases are elongated and vowel sounds are manipulated to properly fit the vocal pitch range. It makes it harder to clearly understand the words unless you listen to this style a little more. But I assure you, there is nobody that has better diction while singing than Floor!

@@littlemouse7066 Well if that ain't some biased BS right there. I, too, am and native English speaker, and yes, it's near impossible to understand everything she's singing, until you know the words. That's just a fact, so have several seats. Her choices are meant to make the phrasing fllloooowwww, and to do so, she has to sacrifice some enunciation. There's nothing wrong with that. It's a style choice. The first "My fall will be for you" is all drawn together, and it's very hard to decern the lyrics there with fresh ears. You want perfect diction, go listen to Barbara Streisand. Nothing against Ms. Streisand, as she's indisputably fantastic. I just prefer a more free flowing vocal technique, even at the expense of being able to understand everything on listen #1, so I'd take Floor's vocals all day long.

If you want to see something like that live, I would recommend watching Santa Terra from Epica's anniversary show Restrospect. Nightwish Shadow Unit from Estonia reporting in ! 6'1'' Dutch Valkyrie Goddess spotted ! Gabriel Bardac entered ! This is called Symphonic Metal !!! Floor her name is derived from the Roman Goddess of Spring, Flora. Floor Jansen is called the Valkyrie Goddess of Metal and Empathy. Floor Jansen is a soprano, with a range of more than 4 octaves (Eb2 to F6). She can sing from classical to belting and raspy vocals like screaming and death growls. And she's also a voice coach and teacher to boot. Plus, huge vocal nerd 😉. Floor Jansen was the singer of the Dutch metal band After Forever from 1997 to early 2009. From 1999 she studied at the Rockacademie in Tilburg, where she graduated in 2003. She studied musical theatre and a year of opera. In addition to her activities at After Forever, she gave singing lessons. She plays guitar, piano and flute. On May 5, 2010, she presented her new band ReVamp, which was disbanded in September 2016. From 1 October 2012 Jansen replaced Anette Olzon (Second singer of Nightwish after Tarja) as singer of Nightwish during the Imaginaerum World Tour (And she had to learn the setlist in 48h). On October 9, 2013, it was announced that she would be the group's regular new front singer. In 2015, Nightwish released the album Endless Forms Most Beautiful with Jansen as lead singer. Nightwish's second studio album with Jansen as front singer, Human. :II: Nature., was released in April 2020. And the master of this magic is: Our Metal Mozart Tuomas Holopainen (founder, leader, keyboardist, songwriter and the main composer for Nightwish) Tuomas the keyboardist writes about 95% of Nightwish songs, music and lyrics. He also composes the music for the backing track they use. It is recorded in London with musicians from The London Philharmonics. Pip Williams helps with the orchestration. There are two London based choirs too on the backing track, the other one is a children's choir. And of course with a synth you can do a lot. This was recorded at the 2013 Wacken (pronounced Vahken) Open Air festival in Germany in front of an audience of 82,000 people (one of the largest heavy metal festivals in the world and one of the largest open-air festivals in Germany). The fiery bull head is the symbol of the festival. We hope, that there is more coming. NWSU/FloorFan 🤘😎🤘.

I'm glad you gave them a chance. For me it's like tuning my ears to different genres. For example if you watch a soccer game and don't know the rules it's just a bunch of people running around kicking a ball but if you take the time to learn the rules it become something totally different. For me music is like that and I think that's the reason why so many ditch whole genres because they listen but they don't hear. It takes a little bit of time to learn to listen to genres we're not used to. The key is to be open for the new and unknown. It's a way of growing. 🤓🇸🇪

@RikaShae Thank you for sharing your journey with us. Honestly I was a Nightwish fan in their early days but honestly I didn't like Tarja, or Annette's vocals. They are both very talented, one was to much accent, the other was to anime-ish, so I quit listening for a few years. But 4 year's ago I found out they had a new vocalist, and I've been hooked ever since. ...I called forth the Valkyrie, and witnessed the thunder in all its might... Ps. Floor is an amazing vocalist in her own right. She was in other bands before and got burned out. So she stepped back to teaching vocals. Then Anette quit mid tour in USA. So Floor had 48 hrs to learn the setlist and finish the tour. SHE KILLED IT! The wakken (vakken) 2013 performance, she had only been performing with the band 6ish months at that point. Anything she did on the Best Zangers show In 2019 is amazing. "Phantom of the Opera" with Hank Porte, "Shallow" cover from Lady Gaga, To "Que sie siente" She speaks atleast 4 languages lol. Sorry for rambling, just awesome when you experience someone being taken back something that has amazed you as well, can't wait to see more 👍

They have a backing track where you can hear orchestra, choirs and some effects. If it was financially and logistically possible, they would have a full orchestra always behind them on the tour. Tuomas also plays a lot of different orchestral stuff with his keyboards. You asked about the song - it's a one song. "score" so it's a movie soundtrack type of song. Fun reaction! Don't feel bad or silly or whatever for thinking the pipes around Tuomas' keyboards was an instrument. By my guess somewhere between half and two thirds of people make the same mistake and ask the same question. For doing future Nightwish reactions I'd recommend using videos from Nightwish's official channel, the Nuclear Blast Records label channel, or the fan channel Nightwish Arena. Nightwish Arena has many full concerts in the playlist tab with each song from the concert being its own video. The many concerts cover the entire 25 or so years of the bands history.

I do not know of any other singer that can do that and do it so well. She also has a solo career where she wanted to do something different, so it's mostly pop and oh so good. Floor is currently pregnant so the band took a break and is working on another album. Floor was not an official band member at Wacken Open Air 2013, but was soon added. WOA2013 had over 82000 people. The largest of any group that I'm aware of is Metallica during the beginning of the collapse of the USSR in Moscow. They drew around 1.6 Million. Madness, a few people died in the crowd. Hard line government people tried to stage a coup. Fun was had by all.

Don't expect every Nightwish track to sound like this. Tuomas never composes the same type of song twice. I am 83 years old and have been listening to rock music for 68 years and have never heard a band like this. I'm addicted, having to listen to them every day, whenever i get the chance.

As Nightwish work with the "London Philharmonic Orchestra", it is impractical and very expensive to take the orchestra with them on a world tour. A part of the music is a recording.

Lol yeah probably would hamper a tour for sure!

Floor can also do the "throat thing", but with Nightwish she only does it selectively. It's atypical for Nightwish. The video has subtitles. This doesn't apply to all videos. Just try it out in the next video. The Voodoo Skull is a bull skull and the logo of Wacken Open Air. The festival takes place in a rural environment where there are also cattle. The choir and orchestra are original recordings that run as a backtrack. That's why the band disappears from the stage in the middle of the song. They don't have anything to do. Unlike other symphonic metal bands, they have never played live with an orchestra. Nightwish is a rabbit hole with rabbit holes. Several side projects run alongside the band, ex-members were also successful without the band. Marko and Floor were already known before Nightwish. Unfortunately there will be no tour for the album, which will be released early next year. Floor will be on the road with her solo pop program. Marko wants to visit the venues in Europe in a campervan so that he can see them properly. Floor has been the temporary help here for 10 months. The band had a falling out with second singer Anette in the middle of the tour. Two days before the next concert they no longer had a singer. That's why there is no studio version of any of the songs with a floor. They won't record their first studio album together until 2015. The not yet released album number 10 is the third album with her. There are also six live albums. Three are with Floor, which include four concerts. You'll hear a lot of live music. More Symphonics: VISIONS OF ATLANTIS - Pirates Will Return (Official Live Video) | Napalm Records Blackbriar - Mortal Remains (Official Music Video) Within Temptation - Bleed Out (official music video) EPICA - UNCHAIN UTOPIA - (ΩMEGA ALIVE) (OFFICIAL VIDEO) Nightwish without Nightwish: Floor Jansen - Sweet Curse (ft. Henk Poort) (Live) MARKO HIETALA - Dead God's Son (OFFICIAL LYRIC VIDEO) Tarja Shadow Play live Circus Life version AURI - The Space Between (OFFICIAL LYRIC VIDEO) The Dark Element - "Songs The Night Sings"

They have never played live with an orchestra and announced a stop of touring for the next album. Maybe they'll do it 2026 (30 year band anniversary) ?

@@David_randomnumber I've also written this down on my wish list. If they don't tour, then they record a concert with an orchestra. Or something else complex that they wouldn't otherwise implement.

Great reaction!! Nightwish is a very deep rabbit hole, where every song is different with unexpected twists and turns. Virtuoso musicians, a genius songwriter (Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player whom many call the "metal Mozart" is a master of emotion and melody), and the best lead singer alive today (Floor Jansen can sing anything, from operatic highs to full metal growls) - and bassist Marco Hietala is a metal legend and also has an incredible voice (and when he sings harmony with Floor - it is pure gold). Their studio tracks are great, but their live performances are phenomenal, Nightwish is one of the best live bands of all time. I've never heard a bad song from them (at least not live with Floor). If you want to dig deeper, I encourage you to follow Gabriel Bardac's list, and I highly recommend any of these live performances, which are some of my personal favorites: (From Wacken 2013): Romanticide, Storytime, Ghost River, Amaranth, Song Of Myself, Last Ride Of The Day, Ever Dream; (From Wembley 2015): 7 Days To The Wolves, Yours Is An Empty Hope, Nemo, Elan, My Walden, While Your Lips Are Still Red, Shudder Before The Beautiful, The Poet And The Pendulum; (From Tampere 2015): Sleeping Sun, The Islander; (From Buenos Aires 2018): I Want My Tears Back, Dead Boys Poem, Devil And The Deep Dark Ocean; (From Tampa): Sahara; (From Hellfest 2022): Tribal, How's The Heart.

If you want to know more about how Floor became the lead singer of the band, there is a documentary called "please learn the setlist in 48 hours" here on YT. Mid USA tour the former singer Anette was fired from the band, because of several difficulties, and they had to find an interim singer. Floor was asked which the band knew from Gigs with Floors former Band After Forever. The only downside: she had to learn the whole setlist in 48 hours. Well, turns out she nailed it and became the lead singer of the band.
