Everyone thinks this song is about Gilbert ,.. but during an interview he said when writing it,.. he simply put himself in the position of a person who felt this way. That is genius writing. Never gets old. Timeless,….Great reaction,.. Thank you,… you made my day with this one.

Nothing about this song goes over anyone's head because the lyrics are profound and clear. All one has to do is listen. It is about the song not the background, not the colors. It is about pain and loss and emptiness. Usually one listens to the entirety before issuing a broad critique. One failure after another, one heartbreak after another made this song what it is. Magnificent journey through heartbreak. Too many interruptions at important junctions causes a misunderstanding.

Gilbert O'Sullivan (Real name Raymond Edward O'Sullivan) in an interview, said this song was not about his life. It was just an idea that he came up with and wrote. "Alone Again (Naturally)" is an introspective ballad, starting with the singer contemplating suicide after being left at the altar after his bride deserted him, and then telling about the death of his parents. O'Sullivan has said that the song is not autobiographical, as he did not know his father (who died when O'Sullivan was 11) very well, and that his father had mistreated his mother. Also, his mother was still alive when the song was written.

When you said about the black & white background & that you wouldn't go there but some may!! Nup again, I have known this song for yrs and watched the clip many times- not once did I look at it and see b&w anything it was just a clip of Gilbert singing !! You saw that!

Throughout my childhood, in the early 80's, I remember going to grocery stores, department stores, or a pharmacy, and the instrumental version was a popular shopping/elevator music track. The song is cheerful and melancholy at the same time, yet simply calming.

You are the first reactor I have seen to this song that has said the song makes you feel good. Everyone else said it was extremely sad, and all the people who commented on it said it made them cry.

I Think it's the Piano-Beat, However I COMPLETELY AGREE! This is the Saddest Song EVER, and ALWAYS makes me cry since I first heard it at 10 years old. Ironically, my "feel good" song then was "Brandy" That this song jockeyed for top spot #1 on The Charts that Summer] [probably the near ONLY one I had in 1972--It was my most depressed childhood year] Brandy is the song that gave Alone the most competition at jockeying for top Billboard spot #1 on The Charts that Sad Summer. Brandy was near the top #1, when SUDDENLY "Alone" [came from behind, RACED to the top #1 spot] & denied Brandy the #1 Spot. Not to be outdone, Brandy hung out at #2 for 4 weeks, bide-ing it's time and then BAM! "Brandy" "MAM"ed if you will, Alone & replaced "Alone" [MAM records-get it?], Denying Alone 7 STRAIT weeks at #1 ["Alone" got 4 & 2 Instead] Dividing it's full run at #1. Making "Brandy" finally get to #1 itself, for 1 week, before "Alone" RECLAIMED the #1 Spot. These 2 Songs could not be further apart in mood--"Brandy", Fun and lively [although the story is also kind of sad-lost love], And "Alone Again" is the heart 💔breaking saddest song EVER😭. Yet I could not wait to hear EITHER come on the Radio, that Summer 72 So I have NEVER heard this song described as a "feel good" song.

@@byron5151 Wait so you're telling the charts in those weeks looked like Alone Again, Brandy, and Long Cool Woman? I was looking up stuff about that one and found that it was denied the number 1 spot by Alone Again. What a fucking time for music.

  • @byron5151

@@althealligator1467 No Alone Again & Brandy BOTH hit #1. It's just that Alone Again, out ran, Brandy to #1 up the charts, dominated it, but Brandy was also so good, that Alone Again Stepped down to #2 for ONE week, letting Brandy have it's week at #1 throne, only to RE-take the #1 Again for 2 more weeks. Alone Again was the #1 Song of Summer 1972, but Brandy was not far behind--I loved them both. Not as much a fan of Long Cool Woman, but I recall likeing it too back then.

First when I discovered the song I liked the lovely and catching melody Gilbert's voice is unique. The true lyrics you discover later on. In Holland this song had it's own lyrics sung by entertainer Gerard Cox 1948 as title. About the simplified society we lived in during the fourth year after WW II.
