Song was a big hit back in the 70s, used to sing along to it. But damn the lyrics hit so much more powerful when you actually read them. Like you said, it must have been the upbeat sounding melody that softened the sorrow somewhat. 😳

This song hits home for so many in different ways. For me my Fiancée had known had dated for years and where weeks from our wedding day when she passed away due to an undetected heart condition. This song just about sums it up to perfection. Don't let that depression hang on you however that is tormenting the one your loved ones sole and later they will be waiting to have words with you about how you chose pain in there Memory rather than to rejoice in it. Ho sure the hurt will still catch you but just look inward and see that look they give when you try to Push in a Pull to open because you're not paying attention or try to drive while still in park. Yup that look and know they Don't want you suffering for their loss they want you enjoying Life all the more for them. Bless and be well all and know God does not make bad things happen anymore then the good God made the Univers that you are in and just getting here you already beet the house odds at even the Shadiest back woods card game. So, rejoice in that, and the rest is Gravy. Bless and be all.

Yes, the song was big in the 70's, but having been down a few roads now (67 next month) damn! The losses have been quite a few, including my husband at 48. I haven't heard this song in years, I'm so glad you reacted to it. Heartbreaking song, but you came across with some very insightful thoughts. But you are right about grabbing the bull by the horns, I mean, I'm old and wrinkled now, just last week I was 20!!!! How the hell did that happen?? Good song choice. Thanks for sharing.

I have always loved Gilbert and i have loved this song since my first hearbreak in 1974. I was cut to peices and took a long time to recover. I married him. He wasnt who he showed me when we were dating. It's devastating when the real person comes out. Your right when my dark thought are trying to break through i just keep smiling and no one knows. My second heart break was in 2012 when my soul mate died. I'm like his Mother in this song. I'm alone even though i have family all around me. I dont understand why God took him. I still love him. I still need him. I still miss him. There are days I do cry all day.

It's a very Irish song, Fatalistic and accepting at the same time. It's universal. The upbeat tempo is how we try to get on with life, what else can we do? Around the same year, the great American singer/songwriter Jackson Browne, recorded his disillusion -- just as heartbreaking. The Pretender by Jackson Browne. kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZIaDrZNmhtm1gZM.html
