I work in physical therapy with the geriatric population. I explain to people every day that I will not be able to help the joint itself, but I can strengthen all the muscles around the joint for added stability, increased mobility, and way less pain. Sadly, the majority of people do not want to put in the effort and opt for some form of surgery. Then I see them again in a few months, still in pain (or worse pain), and we go back to square one. The body is amazing and can heal itself from just about anything if given the correct tools.

@@billiejeanbaccus159 It does hurt but moving helps. Trust. Start slow and be kind to and listen to your body. Discomfort is OK but pain = stop. Pain isn’t bad just a sensation our body uses to talk to us. Note how many reps created actual pain. Take a day or two and try again at 1-2 reps below what caused pain. Use heat, ice etc (whatever works for you) after each set of exercises. Also try micro doses of them by 1-2 exercises during day - waiting for microwave or stove, talking on phone, brushing teeth etc. Bal with ones to loosen and relax hips and pelvic floor muscles - start slow again and listen to your body. Just search YT incl Feldenkrais by Taro. Doing something consistently is better then nothing - within YOUR pain threshold. A few visits for in person assessment w/a physical therapist can help. Google your area and read staff bios or call for their experience w/ YOUR situation. It sounds cliche but relaxing incl meditation etc esp at night and when stressed helps (or laughing even crying). Anxiety/anger triggers cortisol that can incr inflammation. Not bad but whole other topic for you to google. Our mind is very powerful. Hope any of this helps. There is light. FWIW I’ve had chronic pain incl OA for ~25 yrs. It’s taught me a lot. Namaste PS: Never compare. Focus on your body and path.

I agree. I had no idea what was going on with this injury - couldn’t find it! I am (67) and still playing competitive basketball, tennis and also cycling. I’m not a drug-store solution dude. Yes, lots of these injuries happen due to age. But, it happens due to stopping!!! Keep going folks, just stretch and workout more consistently. For cyclists, our sport is a body tightening machine. You must stretch before, during and after - especially on off days. MORE VIDEOS LIKE THIS PLEASE!

And I did not think for myself. I am so grateful. I know these exercises, of course, in fact, I spent 3 years in Paris doing the CANCAN! But I panicked because of the actual pain. I so appreciate your tough-talking encouragement. Just what I needed. A literal kick in the butt.

I had physiotherapy, which did not help but none of these exercises were prescribed .... The pain only started a few months ago with not having any pain before, which is weird to me. And, I have always done sport, ballet dancing, swimming, thai chi ... and never had any injuries nor pain in my hip.. So their prognostic makes no sense to me ...

Hi Matt! I’ve been living with chronic pain since early 2001. I’ve tried injections in my spine and have been on numerous medications. The fact is, these treatments amount to placing a band aide on an severe deep cut. In other words, not efficient enough to truly help. I’ve had physical therapy, but therapists can’t do anything after you go home. I appreciate your approach to pain. Treating the entire body to pain relief that can be attained. You are very knowledgeable for being so young. You seriously look like my son…lol. Most times, I feel that youth is wasted on the young. Not true for you! You are helping my body get fit and giving me an active life again. I feel reborn! Thank you son for posting these videos! You’re very fun to watch and I even forget I’m working out! Hugs to you, your wife and your kids!🌺🙏🤟🌈💪✌👏

Hello everyone. It's a little trickier than just strengthening. I have watched, followed and did every exercise that Matt recommends for the past 5 years. First, it has helped me become much more flexible as I started with a completely locked left hip. I'm still not able to go for long walks without suffering for a day or 2 afterwards. It's not just your hips when your whole body has been misaligned for many years. When my hips loosen up, then it's my neck and shoulder that hurts. I still do these exercises, but I have started also doing Pete Egoscue's , Pain Free (new edition) book movements. You must relax the tight muscles to get your body back into full alignment. It's working along with the strengthening. I'm 71 and have avoided ship replacement for 6 years.

Matt, you are a God sent! Thank you for the amazing videos and articles you share. I am a normally fit and active 49 year old woman (xfit, yoga, hiking, paddle boarding, skiing) but a few months ago, back in June, I changed jobs and joined a start up that had me working 14 -16 hour days under a toxic environment. The stress level I experienced and the lack of time for activities resulted in an impact on my physically health and on my right hip and leg, specifically. I felt sure hip flexors and tight muscles for months and I woke up one morning with extreme pinching pain in my hip and glutes and could not walk or climb stairs anymore while bearing weight on my right leg. From there I went down a rabbit hole of doctors, X-rays, MRIs etc I am told I have severe bone degeneration and a torn labrum. The OA is mild but there is cartilage erosion. The immediate and repeated advice I have been receiving is that I need a hip replacement, from various doctors. It has been a dark tunnel of depression since. I am normally very mindful of my health and well being and would never prescribe to invasive procedures but I was scared and the chronic pain is getting worse, making feel that my body failed and the only hope is reconstructive surgery. My gut disagreed with tires but I felt hopeless. I just discovered you on KZread and I believe the universe wants me to find my mind /body connection and heal myself. I am very inspired by your message and as of today will commit to the exercises to strengthen my muscles and restore my functional mobility. Can you please advise how to obtain more information to ensure that I set the best program for a healthy and rapid recovery and maintenance. Thank you 🙏

It seemingly started after I started doing hip stretching exercises after being told by a trainer I had poor flexibility in my hips and lower extremities. Never had any bad nor hip pains before. I could have overdone the stretching exercises causing some injury by pushing on with the stretching despite warning pain symptoms. Finally was diagnosed with osteoarthritis by an orthopedic surgeon with x ray showing joint space narrowing and acetabular spurring. No bone on bone yet. After viewing a multitude of videos, I am getting to believe that muscle strengthening is the key. So I have become hooked to your videos, and am very interested in your follow along videos.

I love that you suggest these exercises first before falling into the narrative that you probably hear from your doctor that “surgery” is needed to alleviate your pain (because you have “bone on bone” articulations). I think your own experience informs the information/demonstrations you present to us, and I very much appreciate what you explain and show us. Thank you!😊

Then I gave the hips program to my parents, who are in their 80s and were practically disabled after getting seriously ill overseas. They are now walking again, four miles per day, and still doing the program! And now I am beginning the hip program as well. I am 61 and athletic. I also do yoga. But when I end up in pain these days and think I've been injured, I turn to Upright Health for answers. Thank you, Matt and Shane!

Wow, I'm so HAPPY I found your site! I've just been diagnosed with this and it's changing my life. I can't wait to get started on this program. Great instruction, easy to follow, much more comprehensive than my P/T. I always thought it was a lax muscle issue...THANKS!!!

I love the fact that every time moving your body parts that may seem to feel pain will actually feel less painful or even no more pain when we move/exercise that part more often.

I would love a follow along video. Heck, I would love a full body exercise video because I have pain from my neck all the way down to my feet! I wish I had found you years ago, but I'm glad I've found you now. I've already shared your info with a few people and there are a few more I want to share it with. Thank you so much for all the time and effort you've put into creating these videos and for caring enough to make them available for people like me.

Love your videos...such great advice with a gentle tone which is so critical to adopt a slow and steady wins the race type of program and stick with it. I have found your videos so helpful! I ended up with a hip replacement because I discovered after trying for 4 years to avoid surgery that I had a necrotic hip. But your information was super helpful getting me back to full functioning, running, jumping, aerobics...and playing with my grandkids...I'm turning 66 in 2 weeks! Thanks for the humor ...laughter makes it all easier!

With that being said, I have been experiencing hip flexor pain and plan to start doing these 3 exercises this morning! You are a God send!!! Thank you

Thank you for this content! Please continue your videos! They are so helpful to me personally and I am sure many many others. I was always very physically strong until my mid 60s and I pulled a muscle in my thigh and after a while it caused me pain in my knee . Then I started limping and that caused hip pain. The doctor only focused on the knee and hip and ignored the thigh muscle pain which stated this cascade of issues. Since I still have occasional pain in my thigh but not my hip, all the work comp doctor said to me was you can always get a hip replacement😵‍💫

I'm in my early 40s and after having a knee pain episode for New Year's Eve and being diagnosed with patella alta with subluxation, I started physiotherapy. Soon after, my hip, groin and buttock started aching a lot, especially when sitting in the car. Aside from stiffness I seem to have the symptoms of hip arthritis. All this made me feel as if my life had suddenly ended, especially as I love being active and going to the gym. Your video gives me hope and makes me feel a bit more empowered. Thank you.

WOW! I just discovered you, Matt, this morning. I'm 65 and was diagnosed with mild arthritis in both hips a year ago after a Pickleball injury. I have done yoga 3x a week for years (thank goodness) and did lots of physio after the injury. My doc recommended a hyaluronic acid injection but I found Aquafit instead and I am improving! My yoga teacher likes to inform us about anatomy and was talking about hamstrings the other day which led me to do a little research and concluding my Biceps Femoris needs attention (as I sometimes feel heat and pain just to the left of my left knee). Looking for Biceps Femoris stretches led me to you. I've now watched the video above and am excited to have you confirm what I am experiencing ... improvement with attention to muscles. ATM Looking forward to more of your excellent videos and avoiding a hip replacement in the future. Thank you! I would very much like to see your follow up hip video. Kindest regards .... Liz

I love your in-depth explanations. It’s frustrating when you set up physical therapy appointments, and due to time constraints, little background can be explained in order to help gain an understanding as to why their exercises help towards pain reducing success.

I would like a follow along video. I have a shooting pain from top of hip to knee. Xrays and MRI shows no bone issues. Have done some PT exercises that helped but I believe too much sitting in my recliner during covid caused the problem. PT helped but I feel like I need some other exercises and this video seems right. I will definitely do these exercises. Loved what you said about arthritis not necessarily being the culprit. I believe in food as medicine and avoiding Rx. I am 70 years old, vegan and on no Rx. I cured my acid reflux by what I avoid as food and I want to fix this hip problem completely without meds too. I hope this works.
