Himalayan 450 Weight Reduction: Drop 11 kg By Spending Zero Money
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
The idea is simple - build a bike that works for my usage - rally-style fast off-road riding.
Over the next few weeks, I will play around with the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 by following some basic principles - lighter, more power, better tyres, brakes and suspension with a riding triangle that is tailored for the rider.
In this video, we focus on some basic weight reduction. And there's a lot that can come off the bike.
Here's what we took off:
Rear rack: 1915 grams
Saree guard: 1020 grams
Centre stand: 2095 grams
Tool kit: 620 grams (but we put it back later)
Chain guard: 205 grams
Rear footpegs: 260 grams
Front footpegs: 550 grams
Mirrors: 890 grams - 70 grams = 820 grams
Front cage: 3350 grams
Front number plate: 210 grams
Front fender: 475 grams
Total weight removed from the bike: 10.7 kg
If you have any questions, let me know in the comments below and I will try to answer them to the best of my abilities.
I hope you have a nice day.
Cheers

Abhinav : Now, we are going to remove the engine and gearbox from the bike, and the weight that comes off is 35-40 kilos, now the bike weights 100kgs, now the bike is completely modified and will have much better performance....

No no, we keep the engine. And as you can see the chain set is connected to the rear wheel and front wheel is free so, we are going to remove the front wheel and we will just wheelie from here onwards.

Inspiring. Was worried about 195 kg wet weigh 17 L tank, but now, seems it can be dropped down to 175 to 180 with 12 to 13 L petrol, which would be AMAZING. Thanks for taking the initiative.

Nice video Abhinav. Even 20 years ago, round about 7-10 kilos is all we could shed from our 500s removing all the tin work. 196 kilos - 10.7 (round off to 11) is still 185 kilo bike. Not 170. Unless you plan to run it without fuel.
@abhinavbhatt

I'm talking dry weight here. Won't run on trails with 17 litres in the tank. Maybe 5-7. So, to keep it simple, just focused on dry weight. Of course ready to ride it will be heavier.

Wet doesn’t mean only Fuel.. engine oil 2 litres and coolant 1 litres will itself weights more than 3 kilos and fuel of 5 Litres is another 3 kgs at least. soo please don’t miss lead the viewers. PS: you can’t run a vehicle dry. Soo for practical purpose please mention wet weight. Talking about dry weight is like talking about Ex show room price. Practically you can’t own vehicle at Ex show room price and can’t run vehicle with dry weight. Now peace

@@mallelli99 how is anyone being misled when the first thing I say in the video is that the bike is 181 kg dry. Wet weight will always vary since I don't intend to ride this with a full tank of fuel. So, the constant figure here is the dry weight. Anyone smart enough can add the fuel, engine oil and coolant weight to it.
@twowheeledparadox
5 ай бұрын
@@mallelli99 Practically speaking, if the bike were to be taken to a trail with only 7 litres of fuel, that means you are carrying 10 litres less than maximum. 10 litres of fuel equal 7.5 to 8 kg. That is the weight saving with fuel alone that can be realistically achieved as per Abhinav's plan. You can calculate total weight with zero fuel easily too. As I understand, dry weight is fixed according to the components on the bike. Wet weight varies as fuel is consumed. While we would all prefer to see the reduction in maximum (wet) weight, Abhinav seems to be focusing on the constant weight which is dry weight.
I like this project!👍 Happy New Year btw.🎉 PS. I know some, like Tusk, have solved the front indicators by integrating them into the hand guards.. might be worth considering..🤔

Happy new year. I don't want the indicators on the handguards since we ride in the bush a lot. I'll figure out something.
Nice video Abhinav, the new Himalayan has a huge potential to be close to the perfect ADV tourier in our country. But the only major issue that I felt when test-riding the vehicle was the weight of the motorcycle. It was a little too much for me, but some may not think of it the same way. I loved the idea of stripping it down to make it weigh less than the stock motorcycle, and the best part out of the whole lot was the saree guard. I don't see the necessity of it being a standard in our country as hardly women drape sarees these days and travel along as a pillion wearing it.
Love your crisp and clear content Abhinav. Subbed+

Highly interesting. Thanks a lot for the good work. Wish you could work more offroad bikes in this aspect of weight reduction.
I am really searching for a video like this... You are doing a great work💖
EXCELLENT work and job guys. EXCELLENT. WELL done. 10/10. Greetings from OZ'. (Australia)
Now this is totally a different type of video....Hats off for making such great video 🔥🔥🔥
Abhinav i bought RE Meteor 350 after watching your videos and I am loving it.
Excellent work!!! THANKS
I had planned to do pretty much this, maybe not the mirrors. I travel very lean and my total luggage is around 12 kgs out of which the tubes znd tools to change them is around 3-4 kgs. This is for my xpulse. So once i get the Him 452 withthe tubeless spoke rims, lot of weight from my luggage will go. And i carry just 1 tail bag so the rear rack also is of no use to me.
This amazing..please continue with this project
Love the look of the bike after stripped off, a lot cleaner, I would do the same if I own the bike, look forward to future videos about this bike :D
In one word, EXCELLENT.
Cool video. I was going to tell not to remove stock toolkit. We never know when some tools fail and its better to have backup. And I was glad that you decided to keep it. Haha.
Wrong decision for removing the mirror, mirror is most important part of driving time
Tried this weight redux journey on my Himalayan411 and it really really helps a lot! The bike really feels different!🔥
Will be having a tough day at the offc.. glad theres something to look fwd to😁😂
Lovely and really amazing !! would eagerly waiting to see the final cut weights but hope there is no compromise with Bike and rider/s safety.
Great weight saving there🙌🏻 Curious to know what else can be removed or replaced with lighter equipments. Loved that double take trail mirror 🤠, i was assuming it's Zefal spy mirrors on the previous video.

possibly - Lighter wheels, lighter exhaust or Aluminum sprockets (and sprocket sizes if tuning required), But most importantly, one just needs 10 to 12 L of petrol (which would save 4 to 5 Kgs) on top of this weight loss.
Is it the rally version which RE showed during launch? Or did you modified the seat?
Full review is good with whole experience you shared
Satisfying video. Great Content Bro!
I can't wait till this bike comes to the U.S. I want to get a close look at one. I figure it carries similar weight to a Gen2 KLR.
This video will definitely be popular among the international audience who are extremely obsessed with the heavy weight of the himalayan 450. After this they will copy the same and do many more customized modification.
Great job guys. It's looking pretty sweet while being uncompromisingly functional. I do think using a couple of cable ties to secure those wires to the front fork would be prudent though.

How is it possible? If you have a idea please make a vlog on this because we get a factory made. Less tax i think so.
Interesting video.& easy to lose some weight off the himmy.looking forward to next 1
Abhinav ji, I've a out of the context question,.. What is the seat height of the motorcycle after installing the rally seat? Actually, I'm planning to buy a himalayan with rally kit for me. But the main problem is, I'm just 5'8". Can a person of my height flat foot on a rally spec Himalayan? Please answer. And if there is any embargo on you then please make a detailed video on the RALLY SPEC HIMALAYAN after the embargo is over.
You are forgetting to remove the pistons from the engine.... Then air filter.., fuel gage etc....
Genious!🎉
Hello Abhinav, Like always you have taken the initiative for modifications. Kudos to you. What is the make of the footpegs that you have installed. And please try to develop a series of accessories for the new himalayan.

Some more ideas, in case they were not considered: - replace the plastic fork protection by soft one made of neoprene - replace the wet battery by a Lithium one - check for a light weight chain/sproket kit You still have the chain guide installed, which might not be mandatory but I would bring back the chain guard for safety reason. And BTW "kg" sounds a bit strange for a European. "kilogram" is much more known 😉

Amazing! I think weight can be further reduced with lighter sprockets, also especially with SS Full system exhausts without the heavy unnecessary catcon. I hope Hero guys are watching, with the Xpulse 400/450, hope they can keep an eye on the weight. Considering how heavy the XMR is, compared to it's much lighter rival, the R15 (20kg difference), I don't have high hopes here though, they maybe able to prove me wrong.

Great Video Abhinav. I am in a fix now. I have had booked the Himalayan 450 in December and now it’s in transit. Will be in the dealership in a week’s time. However, watching so many negative reviews regarding vibration, coneset and what not, I thought of cancelling and booked the Honda NX 500. Now, yesterday I took a test ride of Himalayan 450 for around 200 kms from one of my friend’s dealerships. My observations, beautiful machine, it is big, did not find any issue lifting from side stand at all, good quality, powerful engine, torque under 2 k is slightly less, the best suspension I have tried so far in My last 15 yea of experience. Anything above 2k RPM and this machine is just a bliss. However what is confusing me is vibration on the foot pegs in between 4-5 k RPM in 4 th gear specially and the speed is between 50-65 kmph . Rest of the gears in the same RPM did not find much of vibration. It has slight buzz in the handlebar and foot pegs, which is a good feeling and nothing negative about. This vibration in 4th gear is worrying me only. Please Note, it was only 30km run bike. So after returning from the ride, they have serviced the bike and changed the oil for me. Today I am going for a ride again and see if it has made any difference. What should I do now Himalayan 450 or NX 500?? 👋
@abhinavbhatt
4 ай бұрын
If you are comfortable with the pricing of the Honda and plan to mostly ride on road, get the Honda. It will age better than the Himalayan for sure. Vibrations - I don't really care about them, they are barely noticeable to me. If I were to get a bike between the both, I'd get the Himalayan due to my off-road riding bias.

sock protection or wraps on the front forks would be more protection from dust and particles,,ktm duke owners used to buy these or get them made, also rear chain guard should be re added to prevent oil plash marks all over on the bike and on rider and pillion. You can Remove catalytic converter for better performance as well as weight reduction.
Looks nice. Just out of curiosity; I was wondering if one could have a two by two parallel twin exhaust style set up with this motorcycle (I know it’s a single). Symmetry is sexy; hence asking.

add weight for no benefit, probably lower performance...
I remember motorist removing the hub caps from the steel wheels on their minis to save weight - they then stored them in the boot!

The horn and the metal cover on the exhaust could be removed too or be replaced by a lighter one.
How did you source the tubeless spoke rims when it’s not officially launched in India?🤔🤔

Removing the centre stand is completely pointless! It's so low you'd never feel the difference.
So much fun experiencing your posts from here in New Hampshire ~ USA ~. Not gonna lie. I bought a pack of cigarettes at the local package store here. Two Young Indians here on visa. I just said "Royal Enfield" and out came their wallets with pictures of (smaller) "Royal Enfield" motorcycles. We talked for some time and I did buy the cigarettes 🤮. Anyway, I told them about have purchased a Himalayan 411 (2021 with 3000m) like new. I then got the deposit back when finding the gear ratio was low and not so good on the road @ 65 mph. And so "Keep the Faith" with the Royal Enfield solidarity. All good. Thank you! The 450 is the bike for me. Thanks. 〰✨🌿🦋🌳🌿👍🌿🌳🦋🌿✨〰

I would suggest you to design a fork brace for better stability bcoz that's missing here..... It will play a vital role on the entire handling n braking part

Upside down forks don't need a fork brace. The thicker tubes take care of it.
What type of toolkit do u carry in your motorcycle?
Great one! Good that you do in English.
If ur going for an complete off road built then it doesn't need the headlights indicators speedometer/dash board all the extra wiring as well can come off with just the start button make it like a dirt bike
Atleast this Himalayan’s new year weight loss resolutions are holding up :p
Shredding our weight also major impact on bike 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Very interesting. As for the front fender, in my opinion the high one is more useless, which does not protect radiator and engine and which I also find rather ugly aesthetically. The low one, which wraps around the wheel more, definitely protects more from various splashes and stones. And in fact there are many specialized enduro bikes that mount only a low fender on the wheel. Cheers!
