What a touching poignant graveside chat between Hilda and Stan. Brought a little tear to my eye.
When Coronation street was worth watching. Stan and Hilda were two of the street's greatest characters in the history of the soap.

@MultiFan The scene in which Hilda spoke to Stan's grave is better acted and written than anything in Coronation Street nowadays - and this was only for a telethon special, as well.

Hilda's feud with Elsie was Lancashire's answer to Bette and Joan.
“Has he gone sinile?” A line delivered perfectly by Alec Gilroy.

Real classic Coronation Street. R.I.P Hilda & Stan. I'll remember you forevermore. ❤
Thank you for the upload. What a treat. Jean Alexander was a very fine actress and talented performer. When she played Hilda, you could relate to her as your own Nan, Aunty or Mum. The scene where she's sat at the table and looking at Stan's belongings after he past away is one of the best acting I've ever seen during my time watching soaps. The street has never been the same since her departure. R.I.P Ms Jean Alexander.

Alec Gilroy, absolutely one of the best characters in't Street. He and Bet were brilliant together. Those two plus Stan and Hilda, Jack and Vera, Ken and Dreary, sorry, Deidre, in fact most of the married couples throughout the history of the Street are what has kept it going these past 6 decades.Oh and not forgetting Steve and Tracey.

What a nice scene at the grave. That's how my mum is at my dad's grave. Always says she will be his forever even though the vows said death us do part.
An absolutely wonderful tribute to a real lady in every sense of the word. Take care.
She is a genuinely great actress
When I came across this I was expecting them to be a really badly written/acted scenes but they were the opposite..great to see.
The golden age of soap opera, the 1970s early 1980s coronation street was absolutely brilliant the actors and actresses were unrivalled the class of acting and story lines will not be seen again jean Alexander and Doris speed a different class.

Unlike most of them that just seemed to play an exaggerated version of their real selves, or were they adopting the popular character and trying to make them come true. Very strange and disturbing, especially when they claim to be typecast yet adopt the onscreen character off screen. Jean never pretended to be Hilda off screen, to her it was an act, and a very well paid job, the same as Eileen Derbyshire " Emily Bishop" It was a role they played, they didn't go on endless chat shows pretending to be their alter ego

Only 5 minutes long and had more characterisation than you see in any TV soap these days. Hilda was perhaps a bit of a stereotype but was a much more well-rounded character and likeable than any of the one-dimensional, cookie cutter characters of today.

When corrie was brilliant! Unlike now absolutely dross
Touching graveside scene x
This little snippet of film really lets you see the depth that Jean Alexander went to for her character of Hilda. Hilda's voice was higher and resembled breaking glass, her stride was more like a scurrying mouse and the way she held her face (never could figure out how and what she altered to achieve that). When she comes into the Rover's as Jean, she's striding in confidently, has a pleasantly lower voice, and looks so different. No wonder viewers rarely recognized her on the street.

Lora - Very perceptive analysis if I may say so. I think she sort of tensed her mouth as Hilda, thereby lengthening it and always appearing ready to bark something out. And it was always done so cleverly and subtly, and she NEVER 'barked' in an over the top was like for example the ghastly Vera Duckworth. Just brilliant.

Though still recognisable enough. I live in Southport (as did Jean Alexander) and she would often be seen about town in the mornings. I once heard a story of someone fainting in the street and coming round to see "Hilda Ogden" tending to them. Probably didn't do much to help them regain their faculties 😂

QUEEN of corrie. Hilda
A shame Hilda didn’t do regular pop backs now and then
Jean was a great actress, unlike many of the soaps stars, she actually spoke and acted differently in real life. A true actress, in real life she said how she would hate to have to live near someone like Hilda Ogden. Jean enjoyed the finer things in life, expensive gowns, jewellery, bespoke furniture, fine dining, art and first class cruises aboard luxury yachts. The complete opposite life to Hilda, playing the downtrodden Hilda gave her a luxurious lifestyle. She never married, had children or even a boyfriend and died a Virgin

LOVELY - I've just noticed though that Stan's age is wrong on his gravestone - in one of his last final storylines he found out he was 3 years older than he thought, and was therefore about to be entitled to his old age pension - making him 65 not 62 when he died.

Proper coronation street characters unlike the boring miserable bugger s in today s show, It would be wonderful too see episodes with Stan and Hilda again ,,
Hilda was one of a kind. The very best kind.
Hilda's back. But it's only a flying visit though. And a short visit to Stan's grave and see Sally and Kevin in the house Hilda left for them.
The gravesite scene I had see before but never knew she had returned. Will always remember one of Hilda's lines, "They've done it to us again Chuck!" I laughed forever after that one. Poor Hilda no matter how hard she tried it never came out right. She deserved the send off they gave her!
Stan and Hilda are the greatest soap characters ever no one in the modern version can come close.
Take me back to 80s and 90s England, please .
She's the very actress who played the classic characters from the 60s and 70s who was nothing at all like the character she was playing. The actresses who played Elsie Tanner, Annie Walker and Ena Sharples all had some similarities to the characters they were playing, but Jean Alexander was completely different to Hilda Ogden in both mannerisms and personality and was still so convincing. That is testament to her incredible talent.

Current Corrie is not the same anymore!
When it was entertainment not virtue signalling. Born 1972 and never been to the North until I met my wife at the age of 17 as I grew up in Kent. Now happily married to a lass from Warrington for 31 years. It always reminds me of my childhood watching this with the cobbles when I visit the in-laws, although not many left, but the back streets are still the same!
Almost got to me almost love beyond death ❤
Wasn’t that lovely ❤️
aww that was lovely. Didn't even know it existed
1:19 Grimsby a *small* British port? Granted, by 1990 it was a damn sight smaller than it once was...which was only the biggest fishing port in the world!!
A shame she never properly returned to Coronation Street. On the other hand, seeing how other iconic characters fare when they return, like Bet Lynch or Dirty Den in EastEnders, she probably made the right choice.
Jean Alexander - what a fine actress, her superb performances in Coronation Street over all those years will live on. God bless her for coming back to do this for charity. I loved seeing her as herself at the end - she's such a classy lady. Anyone else notice that the word Granddad is spelled incorrectly on Stan's gravestone as Grandad, with only two 'd's??? Also, Hilda is 'telling' Stan about Dr Lowther but he did in fact meet him when he and Mrs Lowther visited to see Hilda once, and Stan and Dr Lowther chatted about the war! Dr Lowther was far too posh and pompous to have proposed to little Hilda, that just wasn't credible! Great sketch tho - thanks for uploading! X

you can use either, both in dictionary and if you use Granddad it should be spelt as Grand-Dad

Dr Lowther was emotionally cut up in the 1987 episodes and remember that Hilda was nearly murdered alongside his wife. Things like that can make people reach out for companionship in odd ways. Also Hilda probably became a bit pompous herself after moving to Derbyshire.
An Alec special, ''a Grimsby - a small port'' lol!
