Thank you red bull for sharing this story, and thank you so much for everything you’re doing Hilary we all appreciate every step forward you are contributing to in the women’s game. I love women’s hockey. The world championships have been a blast to watch. I’m Canadian first, but the American's have certain talents that just can’t go unrecognized. Makes for an awesome rivalry. To every woman currently playing professionally, and by professionally I mean pro, and for pennies, you are heroes in our eyes. You are the reason our children and children’s children will be able to get on a pond at 4 years old and dream of a life in the pros. Girls are getting into it younger and younger which basically means the skill the speed the shots are all improving, from that young age the way boys have always had the opportunity. Love hockey, whether it’s the bel, the chl the olympics, women’s men’s. It’s the best sport by far, and I so hope it continues to grow and become more and more popular, so that the athletes are paid what they’re worth

as fans we gotta do our part to support women's hockey. we gotta go to games, post on social media, petition for tv networks to play the games. we can't leave it up to the players to build this league. And in term of the rivalry - the players have to just put it to the side. They need to step up and be like Hilary, and play with "enemies/rivals". If the men can coexist with other nations in one league, so can women.

Good for her for pushing for pay. I hope she gets what she is looking for. It’s not so much a problem of the league not willing to pay professional women athletes but the leagues themselves make very little money. If you want to pay the players you need to fill the seats and raise the ticket prices. The money just isn’t there to pay them for what they deserve.

@Tim If you are referring to the women deserve more based on their skills and the hard work women put into their hockey skills, I would agree with that. But the same thing would be true with anyone who puts in monumental effort into some talent that has no economic demand. The women's league did not draw. According to supply and demand economics, when the sport draws more, the women will then deserve more, but not until.

I'm going to add; the narrative of this story reads like 'I want one league but we don't get along'. The background is a lot more complicated than that. Two separate business models. CW could never support salaries that are livable because it was ran as a non-profit. NW doesn't NOW, but it could one day. The CW folded with no goals to change the business model or start a new league. They just left the players in the dust.

Here is my two cents. After watching the women’s games during the Olympics, when the intensity is there it is a great game to watch. I am not sure how many elite level players there are but there has to be enough for six teams at least. I know the game is growing, but it is hard to compete with the NHL and even they have the crumbs of the USA Tv deals. I really think TSN in Canada is hockey starved right now and maybe they can try and work on a CFL type of framework. It may be small fish but you gotta start somewhere. And lastly there are a lot of female NHL fans, somehow they have to be brought over. I really hope they can make a go of this, as they are great quality people that help the next generation of young ladies.

There needs to be a workable economic model -- but it will take building something new. At this point, it may take the backing of the NHL - think of the WNBA-NBA - making a firm financial commitment for a single-entity league of eight teams.....with a blueprint for slow, sustained growth. We saw with the AAF; the checkbook needs to be open well before day one and it has to be accepted that churning a profit will be down the road, over a series of hills and around a couple twisting curves.

The problem as and always will be one of skill. People want to pay to see entertaining hockey. The girls plain and simple don't have it. You'll get some boost when its a national level competition but that has more to do with cheering for the country. Women's leagues, if they are going to thrive, need women to suppourt them. There are just to many other hockey options out there that produce a better product for the women to attract the average male viewer. NHL, KHL, Euro leagues, CHL, college, university, even a good chunk of High school teams produce better hockey.

  • @joshwhitee

I'm going to have to disagree with that one. I'm lucky to have worked at alot of NHL games and produce content for the CWHL and the talent and skill will 100% be there to attract viewers if they can get a combined league together. The NHL has already expressed that if that happened they would give funding for the women's league.

  • @claytoncunningham8770

With teams constantly in the red.

You've won/ tried to win as much as you can but there is no demand because there is no league, no sponsors but looking at soccer... there is plenty of audience that'll watch women compete internationally. The person in charge of the NWHL is Dani Rylan and Jayna Hefford for what was the CWHL. Not sure the reason they never got together was a living rivalry between two hockey nations at the cost of female hockey players all over the world.

Creating one league is a great idea. Another great idea would be to play the game the way it is supposed to be played. As long and females will play the "soft" version of Hockey, nobody will watch it. As the girls say, they watch the guys in NHL, look up to them, so all that is left is to play like these guys. Hockey is an entertaining sport, due to its physical aspect. And in Women's hockey it's not there.

They all want to win for the guys they are with and unlike the male hockey leagues around the world... imagine you wouldn't get paid millions of dollars for doing it... and having to stop early with the thing you love because there isn't a league for it. Forming the critical business and administrative alliance with the larger and wealthier leagues is the obvious answer. I think if women's hockey is going to be successful, they have to ditch the added crap. Play like the men. Get rid of the cages, bring in hitting, fighting, half shields, and enforcers. We know there's success there, look at women's UFC. Same rules as the men. Don't make it a circus but don't keep it powderpuff like it is now. People will watch it if it's not an inferior product to men's hockey.

Women's bodies are different than mens. Biologically we are slower because we have less quick twitch muscles and we don't grow as strong and tall as men do. If there were full on hitting, not saying our bodies are all weak, but some women could get seriously injured. We also play more meticulous and graceful than boys do.

If the ladies want to get watched and paid for playing hockey their going to have to make an NHL team bottom line! No one is going to pay to watch Bantam level hockey

The problems is that women's hockey, like almost all other women's sports, is played visibly slower. Therefore there is a natural comparison to men's hockey and that comparison is not positive to the women's game. Likewise, I would not go to watch a men's senior hockey league. I don't know what to do about that.

It's a cute story but at the end of the day no one wants to show up and watch high school level no-contact hockey. Mens' pro hockey used to play for peanuts until players stepped up and got better for the love of the game THEN the pay came, not the other way around - women need to learn to take hits, get some contact going, get better at the sport, and attract an audience, and then and only then will the "equal pay" come. You have to earn it.

The problem is the also that don't get enough funding to be able to recruit players. It's a catch 22. Remember though, Women's soccer started out like this too. That's why we need the Hilary Knights and the Lindsey Vonns of the world. To start helping girls realize they can achieve things and make a difference.

@@mercuryfever392 "Women's soccer started out like this too" except they haven't changed and still earn way less than men because they play like shit, it's the same thing. Fact is that talent has to precede funding, it's been like that in every men's sport ever, just look at Soccer or Hockey: men in the early 20th century/late 19th century made very very little, but now look at their salaries; they earned the paycheck by attracting an audience.

@@garrettrichardson5780 but the cfl is still minor league even though it's top flight in Canada, you shouldn't expect to make a living wage if you can't make the real top flight league, just like Liiga or DEL - it might be top flight in that country but it's not the NHL. The only sport you can really get away with minor leaguing it in is Football (Soccer) outside of the states.

Cool story and i hope the girls get better, but Theres a reason people dont show up to these games... i played against a girl who played on the USA womens olympic team in a charity tournament and i was much better then her and i played highschool and club hockey in college, no juniors or anything like that. The skill level just isnt there, so why would people pay to go watch this slow boring non contact hockey when they could watch better hockey??? Ita just funny to me because they are demanding people come to the games just because they’re women. Don’t complain about attendance and pay gap when you are equivalent to a highschool hockey player....
