Hike - Kumano Kodo, Japan's Pilgrimage Trail

The Kumano Kodo is a world heritage listed pilgrimage trail on the picturesque Kii Peninsula in Japan.
It is much more than a hike, it's an immersive experience in Japanese history, culture and cuisine.
There are many different route options to choose from, we undertook the Nakahechi Imperial route from Takajiiri Oji to Nachisan.
Our adventure spanned 6 days, including a rest day in Yunomine Onsen - the perfect place to recharge the batteries and soak in the local onsens.
Big thanks to Hiking Trails Australia for coordinating our accommodation, luggage transfers and itinerary, and to the Tanabe City Kumano Tourism Bureau for on the ground support & guidance.
And of course - to all of our Japanese hosts who made this journey an absolute pleasure and shared their rich culture and culinary delights.

I enjoyed the video. Seemed to be very few people walking, I expected to see more walkers. It is something I hoped to do this year but work got in the way...hopefully next year.

really nice and usefull video i'm getting prepare to do the kumano kodo and i luckily made the same stop that you( not the same hotel) . i wonder on the third day did you could take your time to visit the hongu taisha? did you make all the way from chikatsuyu to yunomine onsen by foot (as they estimate time 6 to 8 hour to make the chikatsuyu to hosshimon oji section and it seems you add the hongu plus the dainichi goe?

Thanks for documenting your pilgrimage. I did the exact same hike last March solo. Didn't get to take much photos and videos. This video allowed me to relive that most special 6 days in the mountains of Kii Pennsula! Words and videos are not enough to describe the experience. After a while, I feel like I was already part of the forest! I specially liked the animation tracing your route, distance and elevation at the beginning of your day. What app did you use for it? Thanks again! I'm planning my next pilgrimage, choosing between the camino or Shikoku88.

Super interesting video ! Which month did you it (to have an idea of the weather at this period)? I go to Japan in may 2024 and plan to do it.

We did strength and cardiovascular training at gym but also a lot of long, steep hikes. We are both over 50
