In this Highway Star guitar lesson series, I will show you how to play all of this Deep Purple classic note-for-note.
The rhythm guitar parts will be covered in the first video and they are pretty simple and shouldn't be much of a challenge for the intermediate level guitarist. But, we are also dealing with Ritchie Blackmore here, so these easy guitar riffs are really just the calm before the storm. That storm is obviously the epic guitar solo.
One thing you will need to be able to do well to play all the rhythm guitar parts is play consistent fast downstroke rhythms without getting tired out. This means you will want to keep your picking hand wrist and forearm as relaxed as possible throughout.
In the second video lesson, I will break down guitarist Ritchie Blackmore's incredible guitar solo note-for-note.
This classically inspired guitar solo is consistently voted as one of the greatest solos of all-time. You will be playing a huge amount of techniques including bends, blues licks, arpeggios, unison bends, fast machine gun precise alternate picking lines and more. It is truly a challenge for even a quite advanced guitar player.
As I state in most of my lessons where a large amount of technique is required, it is best to learn solos like this one found in "Highway Star" phrase-by-phrase just like I teach it in this video lesson.
That will enable you to repetitively work on each challenging guitar part and make it sort of a guitar technique exercise. After you have all the parts mastered on their own, you can then begin to piece the solo together by combining all of those individual parts.
"Highway Star" is one of the giants of classic rock. The solo alone is one of the most important of the classic rock era, but the rest of the song is still very fun to play as well.
I hope you guys get a lot out of learning this one!
Carl...

First let me start by saying you are a great guitar player and great guitar teacher. This is a solo that I wanted to sit down and learn for about 4 decades! Lol. Well I watched this video and was playing it in about an hour. Now yes, I do have to get up to speed on the triplicates, but that is just to be expected. With guitar you do something till you get it right, then increase the speed until you are playing it in time. I will master those runs. Guaranteed. I already now have the rest of the solo down, thanks to you . I cannot thank you enough.

Having researched You Tube Carl is the best teacher for Highway Star. He can clearly play it and he is logical and pendantic in his method of teaching. He is thoughtful to the basic needs of the 'guitar pupil' and expresses every note he plays. Now back to my practising, I have no problems with every note of the solo, its that vibrato and that fast runs where I need repetitive practice...!

for anyone struggling with the speed picking part, if u can tremolo pick well already i suggest just going for it if ur frustrated taking it slow bc ur right hand is too fast for ur left hand. it worked for me. if u know the song well and how that part goes, then i think ur left hand will eventually just force itself to do its thing lol.
