I am an HSP person and my boyfriend is SOOOOO not and he refuses to listen, read or anything about it. He thinks I am "broken, too sensitive and need to toughen up" (just like you said). What pointers do you have for dealing with this?

I remember being a child constantly worried about people seeing me cry. I wished to be able to control myself, so I could show a stronger me. When I was at 2nd grade in Elementary, I was sent to the school's psychologyst because I drew all the time, and I preferred to draw rather than play soccer or do other stuff. I'm 28, and life hasn't been an easy one. Certainly, I haven't had a lot of bad things like others, like diseases or losses, but the constant struggle of not fitting in, of not finding people who can relate to your words, of appreciating things and not be able to share the experience because for the others you're just weird, eccentric, crazy...well, that isn't a life I wish others to have. I've found recently about Character Strenghts, maybe you know about it by now. I think HSP is widely related with the Appreciation of Beauty and Excellence strength. You know about it? Greetings from Mexico.

Thank you sooooo much for answering the question about getting overloaded by the news but wanting to stay up to date! Most of my friends and family are news junkies, and I don't think most people today realize how many of us are! They act like I am so weird when I say I won't watch the news or get on social media! Thanks for the validation ❤️

I am highly sensitive as well. I love my family fiercely, can’t watch movies at the theatre, nor news articles. I also talk through things in my mind. I find I need time to myself, especially in my garden with a cup of tea. Loved the video. Danke.

MrsPink64 I don’t like going to the movie theater, either. It’s too dark and too loud. I would actually run out of the theater when I was a child. Now I’ll only go to the movies if I know I’ll like it. How did you know you hated theaters too?

I have always hated the surround sound. I knew I was fine at Drive ins, which is the best way in the 70’s to take 7 kids, but have had to leave every time I go to a regular theatre. I feel shaky and anxious. All the nerves in my arms are jumping around. IMAX is the worst. I know others like the stimulation from it. I feel like I am stimulated 10x what everyone else is.

  • @oliviabrandi5347

Me too. IMAX is fine when the images are beautiful nature pics, but anything glitter than that (which is everything lol) I physically can't stay in the room. Anything in 3D or 4D is horrible, too. I never understood why that was a trend.

I can relate to everything you said. The news affects me a lot so I try not to watch too much of it. It helps that I have lots of sensitive people around me so we understand and support each other well. I can see how that being a HSP affected my ability to handle my dad who did not express his anger appropriately. I would withdraw. We've improved our relationship thankfully. Now I'm working on assertiveness, communication skills and conflict resolution. Being a HSP and learning how to deal with conflict have made me a better person and therapist. Thank you so much for these videos. They are so validating and positive. ❤️

This series has been very helpful. I read The Highly Sensitive Person and it explained a great deal. I have frequently been told that I think too much, from friends and parents. I now realize that this is because I'm an HSP. I now silently tell these people that perhaps they think too little. If they are open to it, I will try to explain. If not, I just change the subject. It was just one more thing that made me realize that I am very different from most people.

Thank you Vera, I have absolutely loved this series. Its been so informative and now I don’t feel as though there’s something wrong with me which I used to do. I had a similar situation to yours with the lady on the subway except it was an engineer that came to my home to repair my door intercom. His father had been taken into a specialist care home with dementia and as he was telling me about it he began to get upset so I started to cry and he was trying to apologise to me! I was so embarrassed so I had to pretend that I had experienced something similar with a family member which is why I had gone into a melt down 😢

Very well said Vera than you. I would love to appeal on parents. This is appeal based on my real story. As a teenager I remember my father shouting at me frequently that I do belong to psychiatric unit and I was banned from crying, now and then being ridiculed in front of others. Of course, i developed depression. My mum loved me as I was but was too scared to back me up. I am 41 years old and still suffering from this "family treatment". Parents, please do not ever punish children for being sensitive or empaths!!! Ever! It will stay with them forever and make lots of damage. Please, take their needs seriously even if you don't understand them. It is real!

Ah! I’m late! Sorry! Thank you so much for answering my question! I agree, any type of physical movement can be wonderfully meditative for the mind. I love grooming my horse and cleaning his stall for that reason. No phones, no screens, just me and him and my thoughts. Also, I completely get you on seeing graphic images and listening to the news. I cannot do it more than once a day otherwise I get anxious. Thanks for another great video! This one was one of your best so far! ❤️💕

Even though I'm not a HSP myself, I really liked this video. I've got some of the aspects of HSP like crying easily in public and paying attention to details a lot. For example I can get really excited about a beautiful sunset or delicious food, in a way that other people think it's funny to see how I'm raving about something. The one thing I don't recognise is that I'm not easily overstimulated and I can shut off myself for stimuli real easy if I want to. So I think that's why I'm not a HSP, maybe a SP ;)

You're welcome Lu! I read in the book that the most important thing is to not protect them too much (thus creating the belief that the world is scary and bad) and also not to push them over their limits. Love this so much, and I find a lot of recognition in it... I also talk things through within my mind and sense feeling wise what it means. Love also, when I am overwhelmed, to slow down and give myself extra Solitude en reflection time to decompress. Lately I've been reading in the evenings with a (tv) fireplace and some soft music and its so incredibly wonderful to do.

Hi Vera I really enjoyed this one, nearly everything you talked about rings true with me especially sensitivity to the news, sad stories and the need to be alone quite a lot to switch off from over stimulation sometimes! I am finally learning to cope so much better in general by knowing and understanding why things affect me so much compared to others and just knowing this makes life so much easier! I will watch this again as there is so much information that can help I can’t thank you enough? Really insightful video Vera👌Everything you shared resonated with me😊 My non-HSP colleagues and friends are often surprised at how many subtleties, emotions and information I can pick up either by observation or spending brief amounts of time with another person. This has always come naturally and like you shared in your video I too need to put a 'wall' up as it can be too exhausting. The positive thing about this though is HSP's tend to notice the genuine and quieter people's inner qualities shine through😊

Thank you for explaining clearly what HSP really is! ❤ I am a HSP, but frankly I dont know any other who is, exept my eldest son. Tried to speak about this subject among some friends today, they didn’t have a clue…. Well, for me it is important to explain! The hardest thing being a HSP is taking in other peoples issues, I react deeply when friends/ others get sick, espescially life trethening illnesses… 😢 I have to hide myself sometimes, so to speak… 😊

It’s like looking in the mirror listening to you. Found out in my fifties. I am 61 now. I seem very extravert but am really introvert. Some people think I’m very insensitive but that’s just my self protective mask. I don’t read newspapers. Don’t watch the news and get really down when KZread shows pictures of tortured animals when I open it. Looked how I could ban these but cannot find a way. I can get very agressive when eg someone touches me with their cart in the supermarket. Cannot stand flashing images on tv and wonder why everything they show on tv has to move constantly. I can cry with music but am not so touched by art. I think it is a burden because I get exhausted. Had a burn out at 60 and spent the entire year before retirement home to recover. I’m a perfectionist and nothing is ever good enough. I don’t allow many people to get close because then I can no longer hide it. Talking about it I tried once and the answer was : but oh I have those feelings too. So no more. My husband has a soft and very compassionate character but can stand everything, anything and anyone. Never gets fed up or irritated. In that respect it’s sometimes difficult for me because he says thing like : don’t focus on that or stop annoying yourself. I don’t HAVE to focus I AM always focused. We just are that way and “normal” people sometimes don’t understand. My one wish is them getting in my body for one day and me in theirs. Just to see how it feels not to be HSP.

I believe that sensitivity in women is far more accepted and understood that it is in men, who are naturally competitive in nature, and as a result high sensitivity shows weakness particularly to females who in the majority would seem to look for stability, reassurance and strength of mind when choosing a partner. All my relationships to date have fallen apart to due to an overly sensitive personality that I've never understood or been able to overcome. It is a flaw that has cursed me on many occasions while also being an ally in life too. Currently its like sitting on a resource that I have no idea how to utilize in order to make my life stable and fulfilling. I do find your videos accurate to what I experience regularly and I want to thank you for them. Hopefully the more I research and learn the clearer the path will become.

Following the news is also not recommended for people with a tendency towards depression (what used to be called « melancholy »). Nowadays, news are showed down our throats with the only results of making us feel helpless and useless. I also hate cruelty against animal and do what I can to prevent it and support organised charities, but I don’t want to see any more images of animal abuse. I know it happens, it makes feel terrible, I actively support a cruelty-free lifestyle and I don’t think that seeing more atrocities will “toughen me up” in any way.

Is it possible you could guide me to someone that could help me with this in my grief? My eight-year-old son died two years ago. You talked about intuition in one of these videos. Oddly I was warned of the danger around him and I knew he was going to die and so did he. I feel alone in this area surely I can find support please help me if you can guide me.

Hi Jen, I'm so sorry for your incredible loss. That must be very hard to deal with... I recommend checking out online support groups for grief. I've heard that these also exist specifically for parents who've lost a child. You can also talk to your general physician about getting some help to deal with the grief, perhaps a grief counselor. I hope you'll find some help and comfort in dealing with your loss. Sending you loving vibes.
