The sturdy porcupine defense combined with being lethal when in attack, and all this while being spurred on by the die hard Latvian fans. Congratulations Latvia for a historical medal ! Your team showed a great fighting spirit and managed to win over Sweden and USA. These world championships have been very surprising Germany getting to the final final and Latvia to the Bronze. Before the quarterfinals the four biggest candidates for the champions were Switzerland, Sweden, Finland and USA. First three of them didn't win their quarterfinals and also USA missed the medals.

@@ilarivaisanen I agree, the reason I feel so strongly that it’s good thing for these countries that do not the resources (or chose not to use them) for a state sponsored hockey program is good for the sport of hockey. With that being said, I agree with you and I’m looking forward to seeing it myself.

It's not like this medal fell on their lap. They fought hard for it and deserve every bit of respect from hockey fans around the world. Nothing short of a stellar performance from this small hockey nation. They played like they were possessed and gave us goosebumps along the way. Bravo, well done Latvia!!

its not that it fell in their lap, more to do with other teams overlooking latvia to get to more important games and the usa not giving a hoot about a bronze medal, only canada gave 1/2 an effort against the latvians but unlike everyone else, came out on top, the real question is how does every one play latvia at the next years tourney? I see a last place latvian finish in their pool next year due to this fact alone.

I still don't think other countries respect Latvian team. I know for sure our team respects every one. Every single game they are humble. Thanks for your real opinion.

Team Kazakhstan this year was way better than results show. Games are decided by details- we got a 0:6 paddlin' against Canada on group stage, but look how it ended.

This isn't an accident or even a big upset at this point. They beat Czechia, Switzerland (who beat Canada and was otherwise undefeated), Sweden, and now USA. And they very nearly beat Canada in the semis. This is legitimately a great team! Congratulations on your first medal, Latvia! After this performance, I'm sure there are many more of different colors to come in the future!

Some people here stating that there wasn't the best rosters here etc., might be right in that aspect, but realize how big is Latvia. 1.8 million people, around 8k active players, USA probably have that many players in one city. There are maybe max 10 hockey arenas in Latvia, big or small, yet they manage to compete in this level against such hockey powerhouses, it's remarkable. No other country will ever do something like this again, it's a statement to show what you can do with having barely anything at your disposal

@@zaniiite is it well said? according to that person finland for example should not have a chance against the usa for example as their population is so much smaller. but finland is one of the strongest teams out there. so the population and the number of ice rinks dont seem to matter. if there are good players to choose from then that should be the most important thing. Latvia and finland has that despite their number of ice rinks and population being a lot smaller than that of the usa. France has probably even more ice rinks than latvia and finland and a huge population as well but does that mean that they should play better hockey than latvia or finland just because of that? There seems to be something wrong with this type of thinking. Czechia, sweden, slovakia, switzerland are some of the top hockey teams out there and they have repeatedly shown that they are very capable of playing against other top teams but with huge number of ice rinks and population such as russia and the usa
