We rounded off pre-season by beating Monaco 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw, with Gabriel netting the all-important spot-kick to seal the silverware.
Arsene Wenger was the guest of honour on the night as two of his former clubs went head to head, and French international Youssouf Fofana opened the scoring just after the half-hour mark, however captain for the day Eddie Nketiah managed to restore parity just before the break when he converted a Gabriel Martinelli corner.
Another 45 minutes failed to separate the sides, meaning a shootout was required to decide the destiny of the trophy and we managed to convert all five of our efforts, with Aaron Ramsdale saving from Takumi Minamino to ensure we lifted the trophy for the seventh time.
A packed house were treated to first Emirates Stadium starts in our colours for Jurrien Timber and Declan Rice, but proceedings took a while to warm up with Aaron Ramsdale’s low save from an Aleksandr Golovin shot the only thing for the 60,000 in attendance to get excited by in the opening quarter.
Martinelli was looking sharp however, and the Brazilian was involved in all our best moments of the opening 45 minutes, including an intricate passing move that involved Rice, Fabio Vieira and Nketiah, but the striker was in an offside position when he headed narrowly over.
Nketiah went close again after Martinelli tricked his way past right-back Vanderson and got to the byline but the opportunity went begging, and on 31 minutes we slipped behind when Vanderson found himself at the other end, and his cross-shot was diverted into the top corner by the head of Fofana, leaving Ramsdale helpless.
The setback seemed to sharpen us up, and we found ourselves in the attacking third much more regularly in the final stages of the half, creating a flurry of chances that would see us get back on level terms before the break.
On 42 minutes Takehiro Tomiyasu found Rice on the edge of the box who nudged it past two defenders to seemingly look destined to score, but an excellent sliding challenge by Guillermo Maripin blocked his shot.
Then from the resulting corner, Tomiyasu’s powerful header was excellently pushed over his crossbar by Philipp Koln, but the opposition shot-stopper was powerless to prevent us scoring seconds later.
Another Martinelli flag kick was sent towards the back post, and Nketiah ghosted between two defenders to create the simple task of tucking the ball into the net to mark his moment with the armband in style.
Arteta opted not to change his line-up at the interval, but his troops started sluggishly and were fortunate not to fall behind again when Caio Henrique sped down the left and centred for Wissam Ben Yedder who slid in and struck the post, with the rebound ricocheting off the back of Ramsdale but trickled the right side of the post.
Just after the hour mark the pack was shuffled and amongst seven changes Kai Havertz was brought on for his first taste of the Emirates as an Arsenal player, and two other replacements went close soon after.
Leandro Trossard scampered through a hole in the defence searching for his fourth goal of the summer but drove the ball straight at Kohn, with Martin Odegaard curling over from the edge of the area as he attempted his trademark strike.
But the Emirates Cup remained in the balance and only a flying Ramsdale save prevented Monaco going back ahead when Myron Boadu blasted goalwards, while at the other end a decent Vieira downwards volley had to be tipped over by Kohn, meaning penalties would be needed to decide the victor.

The mistake was he didnt cut angle for the right leg shoot,instead forced a ronaldo left like vs barca.Thats a little bit arrogant in the clouds thinking

@@TJSingh__ only thing he did that game was score a penalty, get pushed over by some 19 year old, and lose the ball; he played the full 90 and had 1 shot, no dribbles, 2 good crosses out of 11, and 1 good ball that entire game. Compare that to trossard who played 30 minutes and did just as much if not more. Please stop thinking every player for us is good, he’s at least better in midfield than a winger but he doesn’t have the physicality yet.

@@maybe2761 One thing I saw for the 1st time from him yesterday since he joined is that he got involved in the game a lot. Which is a lot better since in earlier games he was not involved in the game enough. Yes he struggled in the wing since he can't beat a man like Saka and lacks strength but I think I saw him giving his 100% and can hope that he becomes better. If by the end of season it's still the same, then it's probably time to move on from him.
Eddie gets a lot of hate but he plays for a big club and that comes with the territory. I really love his overall attitude and would love to see this guy succeed.

If I'm not mistaken last year was more consistent, he was testing out the new lineup and its strength was apparent, think back to those MLS wins and the 6-0 Sevilla game. This season it feels like Arteta's just trying things out, giving different people chances to shine, see what they can offer to the side moving forward. Comes with the prospect of becoming a more versatile threat, there's gonna be more experimentation from now on I think

Good vibes at the Emirates today, a lot of young families around who never get to go. Obviously it’s just a friendly so seemed like the players were reserving themselves for Sunday, but still good to be back home ❤️
As a United fan, it's wild to hear some of the stuff being said about Nketiah. Man was working hard this game and was not being helped. That moment when Trossard didn't cut it back to him is wild.
Not the greatest game but I expect the strongest team on Sunday against City, will be a brilliant game and then onto a fantastic season we hope 😅

Nketiah on fire, Trossard always in form... terrorizing defenders like nobody's Business...Fabio Vieira is also playing really good,hope the good form continues 😁, he's improved alot...he should now become better and better, game by game...good performance from everyone ofcoz,the new signings are really adapting very fast,a 5 star performance for both Declan Rice and Jurian Timber...it was a good game...good atmosphere in The Emirates Stadium...up next... Man City

Not really too much to take from the game, was definitely played at a pre season pace. Only real concern is we still look very vulnerable to a direct ball in behind! The intensity and sharp passing will come back when we play competitively

@@aleckiealexander2000 nope, just stating facts, it completely night from day when we gave either trossard or jesus leading the line to Eddie, all we do is pass the ball around, especially when the opposition are playing in a low block, he offers next to nothing. No aerial threat, no pace, no physicality to bully defense, no skills, no nothing but he's brilliant at getting the odd goals though

He has no impacts on the field, keeps passing back and passing errors when he has a chance, He is finish. Selling him is a better option. The reason why you can't see him bad because every players keep passing the ball to him so that he got a lot of possesion stats in this game. But He won't be better, too weak to cover the ball and easy to lose the ball.

Actually no, he is too weak and not qualified for Arsenal. He doesn't know how to cover the ball from players. The reason why you see him become being better because he has a lot of possession stats in this game. The decision from him is poor, keeps passing errors and our left wing is useless.

Rice changes our team completely. Thomas is under less pressure and Trossard looks like feckin’ Messi. Rice makes everyone better. I see big years for a lot of players especially Nketiah, Saka and Gabby.
I like Nketiah. He has that striker's instinct to sniff out a goal out of nothing... The only issue with him is he's just not consistent enough to play for a top 4 team. I think Arteta will start with troussard against citeh.

Nketiah, Jesus and even Balogun are not going to land Arsenal big trophies. Arsenal still need that marquee striker signing, I don't know why they don't go for Mitrovic at Fulham, premiership proven and always thrives in big games or even better Evan Ferguson at Brighton who is clearly developing into a world class striker.
Why are we not going for this foffana. An absolute beast.

The excellence preseason performance and consistently good game play make us believe season 2023/2024 is our year in EPL Champions and domestic double with FA Cup final win... in Europe UCL we already book the final game... still it will be a great moment of the seasons...
Trosard is on form ..However ,He needs to start making the right decision when easier goal can be scored with a square pass when we need a goal
