+MikeM8891 If you got a window in your box and some LED lights you want it to look good. I'm not going to buy puke green colored RAM to put on my motherboard. But to each their own. If you don't have a window or any lights then it would certainly be less important to you. If you never open your case what difference does it make?

John E It's not stupid if you have a window on your box with LED lights too. If you don't want a window more power to you. Than for you at least it does not matter at all what your Ram looks like.

  • @Jon-ov4nc

+John E you can still get decent looking ram that performs well at a good price fod a windowed case. My brither recently bought kingsyon hyperX ramdisks for his new rig, they are quite reasonably priced for the 1866MHz and the 1600MHz at the moment (in fact the 1866 are a little bit cheaper)

  • @Jon-ov4nc

typically speaking, making ramdisk more aesthetically pleasing is a simple as puting some kind of covering over it, it shouldnt cost much to add something like this so shouldnt make them more expensive. Just be careful that its not a price tag associated with marketing how cool they might look, instead just be smart and really think about the performance to cost ratio when shopping around.

I use a Dual Channel set up with roughly 2200 mhz and 665Mhz Dram, I have four sticks so its basically two dual channels. They work very well for me, and they are not top of the line, but they are high end. I wouldn't personally pay over a thousand dollars for ram, I kinda feel that if you have the highest ram, and a shitty processor, whats the point? Ya know?

I got it on video anyhows. CHanging ram with stanadard factory ram. First off, of all it was single channel ( 1x 4 gb) So was like wtf, when I ran CPUID. OK.. Then also very high cl settings. It was ddr 3 on 1333 mhz single channel as in 666 mhz with a cl of like 13. I bought kingston hyper x with a cas of 9 on 1600 mhz. In dual channel ofcourse. My fps in a game like bioshcock has more then doubled. And ofcourse the laptop itself is fast as hell. Don't belive me then fu.

  • @Trancelistic

OK Im typing drunk... I try to explain it the more common way. I've bought a laptop who had a decent cpu and video. ( amd a-10 4600m with ATI HD 7660) I ran the CPUID and saw I was scammed Because it had only 1 x 4 gb running on 667 mhz, aka ddr 1333 on single channel and a cas delay of 13. I've bought a kit 2x4 gb of kingston hyper x, so its in dual channel and cas is on 9. on 1600 mhz my fps in bioshcok infinate went from 20 fps to 45 fps when i started the game and played like 20 min. SO yea. it does help alot. For the mobile amd APU laptops.

It seems from this video that 1866Mhz CL9 is the sweet spot for the Ram that was tested by Linus. It may be a marginal increase in performance, but an increase all the same. I've just bought 2X4Gb of Corsair Dominator Platinum 1866Mhz CL9 to go into my new build, using an i5 4690K and booted from a Samsung XP941 256Gb SSD which is plugged straight into the PCIe X4 lane to achieve max speed. All this will be put together with my new Gigabyte G1 GTX 970. It's like anything.... You can have amazing ram, but if you couple it with crap components, it's like trying to polish a turd, so to speak.

I'm blown away by how fast it is... especially boot time of 15 seconds. I only finished it 2 days ago and haven't had time to overclock yet, so looking forward to seeing what it can do. There is lots of stuff out there to say how to load the operating system onto the SSD and some said it couldn't be done with a 256 GB version of the XP941... It can, coz I've done it. Non of those ways worked for me, but loading it straight from OEM Windows 7 disc did. Make sure you use either an adaptor to plug into PCIe X4 or M.2 ultra slot which I did on my Z97 extreme 6 mobo to use all available bandwidth and speed. Good luck with the build.... :)

I would really like a DDR4 update to this, plus some examples of those rare reasons for needing high bandwidth would be nice. I do weird stuff sometimes like running VMs on my desktop (both at work and at home even) and I could guess that might be one of those reasons. I understand capacity pretty well but there has to be some performance reason for getting high end RAM even if it is just high usage of SQL like on an SCCM primary site server with onboard database (Also a guess but I'm more sure of that guess).

nathan casarez Ehhh, we can't really tell what the real memory transfer rate is of GDDR5 on the APU in the PS4, but I think it's somewhere close to 3ghz. The Xbone kinda doesn't benefit from VRAM at all, since it doesn't have GDDR5. Only thing is that the PS4 has only 512mb of ddr3 in it to aid the vram

  • @dgerdi

+Zilla Yes you´re right. That is exactly what I wanted to write here. I´ve seen a lot of videos about this issue and the advice was always the same. If you are using a AMD-APU without a dedicated graphics-card, use the fastest RAM your Board and the APU supports. It increases the graphics power significant.

BaconAniimal Never say "x memory for this and that should be fine" or "you don't need more than x memory for this or that" ("this or that" is equivalent to "gaming or productivity", for example)... or you'll just look like a fool at some point, just like Bill G. did lol... Besides, you can't predict scenario developments, such as running only certain types of games for now, but at some point getting interested in, or for a job, or any other reason getting involved in, for example, 3D modeling (3DSmax, Maya, ...) or especially in virtualization you run very quickly out of RAM way earlier than CPU power, where a lack of RAM will lead to massive swapping and slow-downs and even crashes of the host and/or client OS (depending on how you allocate RAM) - I speak of experience here. Speaking about slow-downs... I read on one of the major review computer tech review sites where the latest GTX w/ 3GB VRAM in comparison to the Titan or latest AMD cards w/ 4GB+ VRAM was discussed... and, although this is still too costly for almost anyone, 4k gaming is coming and latest at that point (could be even now, as mentioned in the article, at high but below 4k resolutions in BF4) you'll "hit a wall" with GPUs

The actual fps performance varies from game to game. 1 game can yield no extra fps while some games my yield +35 It all depends on how a game utilizes ram.

If one uses CPU with an integrated GPU, such as AMD A series, one would want to use RAM as fast as possible. Ultimately lots of MHz with as a low cl value as possible. AMD A10, for instance, *loves* fast memory. Its internal GPU really get a nice boost with fast memories. I went from 1600 MHz up to 2400 MHz (both at CL11) I got up to 10 frames per second *more* in 3D gaming. (Some games even got more than +10 fps) If one uses dedicated graphics (Such as separate graphic cards), the difference won't be that noticeable, if at all.

You may not be able to play everything at max in the coming years but it should look at least as good (probably better) than on consoles. By the way, as the video showed, ram is probably the least of your concern in terms of performance.

Lee Trigs I find that shocking if BF4 actually used 5.4GB ram!! was there a memory leak or something? (unless you're counting vram).

Do games actually require a certain generation of DDR? Is there anything in the ram to make old ones incompatible?

I thumbed up this video, not because I learned something but because Linus did a good job at explaining why people who have no IGP are wasting their money on pricey RAM. If you're going to spend a lot of RAM, get ECC.

i decided to go for a 16gb ddr3 1600 ripjaws now. I remember having 4mb ram back 1997, to 1gb ram to 2gb ram to 4gb ram which is at their time is unnecessarily huge, but i've come to notice that almost every 1-2years i find a reason to upgrade double the ram size i needed. like my PC i always play this game so smoothly and all of a sudden went lag and system hangs up when alt tabbing and loading. i know 8gb is now the normal size, so i decided to go 16 just to make sure i wont need to upgrade for quite a while

DDR4 is coming out in a year at the earliest, so ddr4 will come out before you need 16gb ram.

but yeah, ddr4... i also recall the time when ddr2 was a thing and ddr3 just isnt worth it yet because it's latency and clock speed are just like ddr2's performance for the next year or so. I cant also upgrade because i have a laptop now hehe! It hurts to know that ddr4 is coming out while i still have ddr3

TheYellowGreenbean You will need to upgrade motherboard and CPU for DDR4. At the moment only the new X79/Haswell -E 8 core CPUs will support ddr4. 16Gb will hold up for a while, and considering that 8Gb enough for most people, jumping to 16 is not a bad thing especially if poorly optimized games or demending applications use up at least 6-7gb of memory. It is also recommended to buy a matching kit, so getting a 16gb kit that works together is better than getting 8gb and another 8gb later and risk having problems because the memory won't work together. Some people run game servers, and easily use 8-10GB just to run it, so a 32Gb kit sometimes makes sense. Thats also enough for a RamDisk.

actually my problem is multitasking. I can play games or surf the web but not both at the same time. 4gb shows only 3gb used but whenever i alt tab system hangs up. 8gb solved my problem! I believe page file is the problem here as my game shows only 400mb used, but when i switch to 8gb is reached 1000+mb used and no lag at all! That's why i decided to go for a 16gb 8x2 kit so i can utilize some parts for RAMDISK or Samsung RAPID for my 840EVO ;) RAMS are getting more useful these days!
