High Liver Enzymes | Aspartate vs Alanine Aminotransferase (AST vs. ALT) | Causes

Lesson on Liver Enzymes, Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST) vs Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT), “Transaminitis”, and Causes of Elevations. One is more specific to the liver than the other, and one has a shorter half life than the other, allowing analysis of how long liver damage may have been occurring. In this lesson, we discuss both AST and ALT, their functions, their half life, organs in which they are located, and causes of elevations in both AST and ALT.

It is important to note that elevated levels of AST and ALT can also be due to strenuous exercise. This is what happened to me after weightlifting for the first time. I just happened to have blood work done the day after I exercised. Anyways, there’s a whole study done on it online and you can read about it.

@@ABCTutorialz based on your profile picture, I'm making the assumption that you have traveled outside of the U.S. for work/service or you have been outside of the U.S. for leisure? If so, you most likely were at increased risk for contracting a Hepatitis virus. However, it should be noted that hepatitis A, B and C are on the rise in the united states as well. Best to get checked for hepatitis antibodies+antigens first and if those are clear, talk to your Dr about other possible causes. Elevated liver enzymes are no joke... Laboratory studies found: potassium concentration in blood plasma-5,5 mmol/l (norm - 3,5-5,0 mmol/l), the concentration of aspartate aminotransferase (ASAT) - 80 IU/l (norm - 10-30 IU/l), alanine aminotransferase (ALAT) - 40 IU/l (norm - 7-40 IU / l), also myoglobin was found in urine. Questions: 1. Is it possible to determine the type of affected cells according to this analysis? 2. What does the increase in potassium and transaminases mean? 3. What additional methods of diagnostics are required?

My ALAT is 1.7 and I was told it shouldn't be more than 1.1 Is it really really bad? Like "your life is just about over" kind of bad? I don't know my ASAT yet as the elevated ALAT was discovered accidently. Still waiting for the results of the complementary blood samples to come in. Does the 1.7 alone suggest that it isn't something like cancer, cirrosis etc, or is it impossible to tell without the ASAT level? As soon as I found out I started a strict ketogenic diet. Hoping it's "only" fatty liver and that it's not too late to reverse it.

Amoxicillan and Metroidazole and had quit taken them a week before the test. I was just kind of shocked, because this was just routine blood work and it has always been normal. I am getting a Hepatic Function Panel next week and we will see if my numbers have come down. I have watched what I have eaten for the most part the last 6 weeks and am down 10 pounds. I guess anything might help.

Excessive fructose (sugar) intake causes weight gain and non-alcoholic fatty liver. For some people their safe daily sugar intake can be as low 20 grams. Apparently over half of Americans have the early stages of this and it is completely reversible by reducing sugar and carb intake. ALT should then reduce in future tests. Happened to me and I wasn't even overweight. Just a diet change and ALT dropped back to normal in only a few months. AST could be temporary due to medications or from resistance training for anyone exercising.

Can taking iron supplements cause a high ALT? I was diagnosed with celiac disease a few years ago. I was told to take iron supplements as my ferritin level was really low at 9. After a year on a gluten free diet, my follow up endoscopy was cancelled 3 times due to COVID. I asked to have my nutrient levels checked but the doctor said there was no need to. So, I kept taking iron supplements as I didn't know what my ferritin level was. Finally, about a month ago, I got my endoscopy and blood work. It showed that my ferritin level jumped to 323 in 2 years and my ALT rose to 116. The other liver enzyme levels were normal. My doctor hasn't followed up with me yet so I was wondering if these iron supplements were the cause? I've stopped taking iron supplements since I found out the results of my bloodwork. Thanks.

Upon the doctor's suggestion, I've reduced my carb consumption and take very few iron supplements. I also now drink black coffee and green tea as they are supposed to cleanse your liver and bring down the ALT levels. Unfortunately, on my last blood tests, they are still high. My guess is that it's the gluten free food that's causing the elevated levels. On top of that, when I don't take iron supplements, I quickly feel tired and run down very easily.
