High Liver Enzymes | Aspartate vs Alanine Aminotransferase (AST vs. ALT) | Causes
Lesson on Liver Enzymes, Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST) vs Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT), “Transaminitis”, and Causes of Elevations. One is more specific to the liver than the other, and one has a shorter half life than the other, allowing analysis of how long liver damage may have been occurring. In this lesson, we discuss both AST and ALT, their functions, their half life, organs in which they are located, and causes of elevations in both AST and ALT.

It is important to note that elevated levels of AST and ALT can also be due to strenuous exercise. This is what happened to me after weightlifting for the first time. I just happened to have blood work done the day after I exercised. Anyways, there’s a whole study done on it online and you can read about it.

Laboratory studies found: potassium concentration in blood plasma-5,5 mmol/l (norm - 3,5-5,0 mmol/l), the concentration of aspartate aminotransferase (ASAT) - 80 IU/l (norm - 10-30 IU/l), alanine aminotransferase (ALAT) - 40 IU/l (norm - 7-40 IU / l), also myoglobin was found in urine. Questions: 1. Is it possible to determine the type of affected cells according to this analysis? 2. What does the increase in potassium and transaminases mean? 3. Does the 1.7 alone suggest that it isn't something like cancer, cirrosis etc, or is it impossible to tell without the ASAT level? As soon as I found out I started a strict ketogenic diet. Excessive fructose (sugar) intake causes weight gain and non-alcoholic fatty liver. For some people their safe daily sugar intake can be as low 20 grams. Apparently over half of Americans have the early stages of this and it is completely reversible by reducing sugar and carb intake. ALT should then reduce in future tests. Happened to me and I wasn't even overweight. Just a diet change and ALT dropped back to normal in only a few months. AST could be temporary due to medications or from resistance training for anyone exercising.

@@lightmoe2480 but its true, supplements can actually make those levels, it happened to me too. my doctor told me... supplements damages our liver too, especially if the minerals included are more than six. you can actually have liver failure just from taking too much supplements. people in the comments here are actually kind enough to share experiences. and i learned that i can get my vitamins through food alone, healthy eating.
Can taking iron supplements cause a high ALT? I was diagnosed with celiac disease a few years ago. I was told to take iron supplements as my ferritin level was really low at 9. After a year on a gluten free diet, my follow up endoscopy was cancelled 3 times due to COVID. I asked to have my nutrient levels checked but the doctor said there was no need to. So, I kept taking iron supplements as I didn't know what my ferritin level was. Finally, about a month ago, I got my endoscopy and blood work. It showed that my ferritin level jumped to 323 in 2 years and my ALT rose to 116. The other liver enzyme levels were normal. My doctor hasn't followed up with me yet so I was wondering if these iron supplements were the cause? I've stopped taking iron supplements since I found out the results of my bloodwork. Thanks.

Dose the iron supplements elevate liver enzymes?
@joeraptor1

@@alilana3045 That is what my doctor told me. He said iron supplements, too many carbs, and stress along with infections can create high liver enzymes if excessive alcohol consumption is ruled out as a cause.

Upon the doctor's suggestion, I've reduced my carb consumption and take very few iron supplements. I also now drink black coffee and green tea as they are supposed to cleanse your liver and bring down the ALT levels. Unfortunately, on my last blood tests, they are still high. My guess is that it's the gluten free food that's causing the elevated levels. On top of that, when I don't take iron supplements, I quickly feel tired and run down very easily.
I just did a blood test, my AST level is showing 71+ and my ALT level is 26. I just had 5 to 6 beers just 2 days before the blood test. Would it be the reason of hiked AST level, or I had also done Advanced level Abs exercise the day before the blood test?

Having that many beers 2 days before would actually elevate your ALT more often. But 26 is a great #. You’re okay.

Your alt is normal to low so i would guess your higher ast is from muscle cell breakdown and not from your liver at all

@@chuckyjules8488 You know, Chucko, TV used to be plagued by so many shows in which all the Canadians had "aboot" problems or worse. It took them about ten to 15 years to get rid of that problem, but they did it. Mostly "Aboot" people were the worst and the South Park lads were so great at pointing up their silliness many year ago, so you rarely hear the word anymore.
