Andrew, placing the reason why it is smart is just brilliant. Most dont understand so this video is an unreal way for newbies to understand the law. Given your knowledge of the game - you could probably do videos on every law there is to help newbies come to the sport - drop the idea to World Rugby and have them included these with the "laws of rugby" app!

Great clips and thank you for the explanations including the one in the comments about the penalty try followed by the try - it seemed wrong to me as the Ref hadn't given the YC yet!

Putting the explanations is super helpful and makes things much better, I don't uinderstand what's going on at 3:31 and the consequences though

@4:10 I feel like that’s offside. With freekicks, you can start you run up as soon as the player starts their motion, but not with penalties, that’s why no one charges down penalties. And in this case the player is well off the line before the penalty has been kicked. So to me that’s offside. Also with Kieran Read, not criticising, but how is that a high IQ moment from Faf? It’s very well done, and he’s done a mighty job at tackling Aaron Smith, but is not necessarily high IQ, it’s kinda low IQ from Kieran Read.

Yeah, he charged down a penalty kick, that’s not allowed.

The quick take after the penalty try shouldn't be allowed. Even completely disregarding the fact the teams are not in correct positions someone on the team is getting a yellow. If they rush and kick like that the referee would not be in position and should be giving the sin bin to whoever infracted to cause the penalty try. There is no way the ref was able to card them and get them sent off before play continued. To me there are multiple things wrong there and the kick should be retaken.

That try wouldn't be allowed. There is a law that states that a kick off after a try may not be taken until all opposing players have crossed the 10m line on their side of the field

@@joshbristow9592 Exactly, I wonder if in the match it ended up being overturned and we don't see it or if they didn't handle it correctly. Not sure if it was different in the past? since the video quality isn't the best it may be an older match and the laws different. Regardless though you can see the ref standing still talking to someone under the posts.

It isn’t something which is permitted anymore. I used to referee when this law change came in, and on the first weekend a try exactly like this was scored. A few weeks later World Rugby issued a clarification in law that quick kickoffs couldn’t be taken after a penalty try.

Can someone explain how the last one is a try? the team in position.. grounded the ball in goal?? especially since hes lifted and put down again.

  • @TheLordoftheGings

Wouldn't the last one have been technically carried back and forced, so a 5m scrum?

4:55 is actually illegal Law 12.5b When the ball is kicked: Opposition players must be on or behind the 10-metre line. Sanction: The kick is retaken.

Niko Matawalu was offside at 4 mins surely?? he's advanced on the ball before the player has kicked it, its the act of the ball hitting the foot that 'ends' the penalty so he cant advance until the ball has been kicked. Not when he's moving to kick it

6:04 - surely if the try is good then the halfback grounded it in goal first, taking it back, so should be a 5m scrum. Feels like in a lot of these technical ones the referee gets the technical rule right but then misses an obvious one

The last play shouldn’t have been a try. The ball is rolled onto the goal line by 9 so is open play. However as 9 pops his hands on the ball, technically he has already grounded it (you don’t need downward pressure if in control of the ball in the floor in goal) before the opponent swoops in for a try. Should’ve been scrum 5 attacking ball.

Law 22: Picking up a ball is not grounding it. A player may pick up the ball in in-goal and ground it elsewhere in in-goal. The referees must have judged that the ball was in the process of being picked up. The ball doesn't clearly leave the deck (I think it had, but you can't see any obvious separation).
