Hidden Secrets Of Scarborough's North Bay Miniature Railway
Ойын-сауық
Join me for a full explore of Scarborough's North Bay Railway, a Miniature Railway located in the former Northstead Manor Gardens since 1931.
We go for a ride on the railway, followed by some behind the scenes tours in the Engine Shed and on the loco's. They even let me drive one of the trains.

I always assumed these engines were originally steam and converted to diesel, which I thought was a shame, I would never have thought they were built with diesel engines.
Steam-outline diesels is something of an internal swear-word for me. But it is shocking that all the locomotives have some historic prestige - closer and closer to 100 years of age in fact!

Another one of my childhood memories from the 1950/60’s. Just like the one at Saltburn by the Sea.
As a licensed mechanic, I would be "honored" to work in an engine shed like that. The cleaner the shed the less work is done. What a place to spend a day, sand-surf and sun AND trains.... Thanks to Darren, Steve and Phil for their time and effort.

When I went last year they had all 4 locomotives out getting them prepared for the anniversary weekend. I had a great day and the driver was showing me the single line token system then said I could ride at the front of the first coach. Well worth a visit if you can.

Very interesting, I spent six weeks every summer at Scarborough with my mother staying at Westbourne Grove. My mother would always get the backseats going and tip the backs over so we were at the front going back. Lovely childhood memories thank you for sharing.
I remember when me my sister and my dad went to Scarborough and we went on the railway and we watched the boat show.
My mother told me about herbert carr who lived on her street in Scarborough apparently he saw the train coming and tried to jump clear but hit the pole shown in the picture and was killed she said his mother was hit hard by his death and kept the curtains closed for a week in mourning which people did in them days.
Thank you Darren. The North Railway is great place to visit. I have been on railway there when staying at Whitby. So many fantastic memories from Yorkshire.

Great to see this again. We used to make an annual trip here from York with my Grandma in the 1970s. A special train was organised for railway widows and orphans. Nothing significant has changed.

A nice little railway system is this one, Darren. The locos are immaculate, indeed, but I never knew that Hudswell Clark's actually manufactured narrow gauge machines like these. They used to produce the standard gauge industrial locomotives, mainly. Nice to see you having a bash at the driving, you did well. I reckon you've got the potential to qualify for main-line driving on the rail network, because your interest in railways is very much noticeable on your videos. Many thanks for this most enjoyable production.

When you are there you do hear comments about the diesels, but the history is very important. They were built that way, they are over 90 years old, and they should always remain as that. They are wonderful. It's just a shame they can't extend the track a little........
@AdventureMe

Excellent video as always Darren. Visited it earlier this year and the guys there were the epitome of being helpful and friendly. Told them I was part of a 12 inch to the foot scale railway reopening and they took me round the engine shed and works. Could not have been more accommodating or friendly. Certainly knew their stuff and were obviously incredibly proud of their locos, the rolling stock, the railway as a whole and it's heritage. The condition in which everything is kept is a testament to that. Well done Steve and the whole team and to you Darren for making such a complimentary and excellent video. Cheers.

Just for clarification about the scale of the railway you’re involved with, wouldn’t 12 inch to the foot equal full size locos, stock, and standard gauge, 4 ft 8 1/2 inches? As you may have guessed, I’m not entirely au fait with the gauges and scales used for replica/miniature railways.

Love this railway, remember these Diesels were built by a well known Steam building firm during the depression to keep everyone busy, because of this it was so cost effective to run contributed to it's success and why they had the money to buy a second locomotive. These are historically important locos in their own right, If you want steam go to the RHDR.
I would absolutely love to do this especially here as its one of the main railways we visited as a kid on summer camps

LOVE IT! Where I come from down here in Kent, in Tonbridge we had a miniature railway situated in the "sports ground". My brother an me use to ride it in the 70's. It's probably been ripped up now. Kids wanna play Fortnite on their phones. On a sideline (or branch line) my Dad was a Fireman at Tonbridge West Yard in the 60's. I got to be a Signalman in a nice warm signal box in the 90's. P.S. Happy memories as a kid and summer hols in Scarborough including rides on the North Bay Railway. Now in my 60's I re visited Scarborough a few years ago and was delighted to see the NBR still running, so I had to have another ride on it. Hoping to visit again before the end of this season and hopefully take some photos, is it possible to visit the engine shed if you ask nicely?

Great video, brought back memories for me as a 'Scarborough Lad". If other memories serve me correctly, I was once told that when the line opened, the locos were diesel but had a steam generator for the effect... unfortunately steam and diesel fumes proved to be an effective paint stripper!! The steam generators were removed shortly after. Can you,or anyone else, confirm this?

I dont think British Weather and overall costs are going to allow it. I found the rooms had been made smaller (it was designed for the moderate well off and their maid and butler to attend them and since then its gone travelodge sized . Obviously the correct side has the impressive views but its too big to be a niche hotel like Morecambe one could be. Perhaps if a non-football shirts rule could be introduced it might be better but its the people paying the money that count.
