Bought a Stihl trimmer a few years back brand new. Followed service recommendations in the manual to a "T". Not a single word in there about servicing the gear head! Glad I have people on KZread to warn me about this.

Same Not in instructions no grease specs do as to stay in warranty Just gaslighting by service staff The engine is great but Stihl make their money like car dealerships - on parts sales and “maintenance” That’s why trimmer head, line and linkage points are all aftermarket on mine because all these low quality bits and pieces keep falling off and are not cheap
Man!! Love your high energy delivery! Don’t think anyone will be burning their heads - at least strimmer heads! Love it! Thanks

What we need is ol Phil Swift to slap some flex seal on it, and we'll be good to go! Lol
I got tired of stocking different oils and greases for all my lube needs. I now use Lucas Red and Tacky grease on all grease applications (including this one). A syringe works great to inject the grease. My tractor, 7.3 f250, generators, and all the other small engines get 15w40 oil. We purchase 15 gallons of oil once per year when it's on sale. My Stihl FS94r is 8 years old, trims 5 acres 3x/year, and works great. Once/year spark plug, spark arrestor, fuel/air filter, and gear gease. I love the power to weight ratio of the 2 stroke 94r.
I FOUND OUT I HAD A GREASE FITTING ON MY TRIMMER HEAD A LITTLE WHILE BACK, I'M GLAD I DID ‼️
That engine has so much torque that gear heads don’t live long. Great video.

huh, I knew to put grease in there - but did not yet know to turn the trimmer head - but makes sense. Thanks man!
Ive got a sthil strimmer and we were not told that the head would need to be greased but we have a very good mechanic that looks after us and our equipment 🥳
Thanks for this information my father in law gave me one n this is key to keeping it for years
Pro tip if you burn out your head buy the trimmer attachment from the kombi system. It's cheaper than just the gear case and it will have a grease fitting . Check lube levels every 25 hours.
Awesome. I have two. Gotta get some parts for them. Will do this today!
Dude sounds like the guy who does that flex tape commercial
I knew there should be a way to do it, but just haven’t gotten around to looking yet. Headed to Stihl dealer now. Thanks.

@@DiscoveringHisWay Can I please get your opinion on three Stihl trimmers, 91r, 111r and 131r? I know you have done videos about those trimmers individually. As a homeowner with several properties and high thick weeds, what would you recommend? At first, I thought about going with 131r, but it might be too much. I also have 55R that I will use for well maintained lawn. I'm at lost for words on which one to pick. Stihl thinks I should go with 91R.

It's probably way too late to be of any help to you but maybe it'll help someone else. If yours is a curved shaft trimmer there's probably a grease spot behind/under the guard. You have to remove the guard and there's a little mounting collar that is screwed into the shaft. There's your grease spot for the shaft. At least that's where it is on mine. Just a heads up though, if you use a regular grease gun the fitting is smaller than a 1/4"
@ROGZI3L

I think a lot of folks do not realize that the trimmer head needs to be lubed up every once and a while. Speaking of which, I need to let the man know that he needs to get some.
Great tip! Two different dealers never mentioned it. Manual does, but who reads it? Will get the grease this week. What's your though on running motomix vs mixing up Stihl oil & gas?
@DiscoveringHisWay

I do that, but at the end of the season I run Motomix to run the gas out of it and then winterize it.
You can use any grease STIHL tube is just convenient.. I use Lucas red and tacky.. you can fill it with a chain saw grease tool or a grease gun or an injector..
Awesome video!!
Man my weed eater has been making a rattle noise on the head and on the shaft close to the motor for 2 years now I think you just solved my problem. Thanks really wish I knew this earlier 🤯
I am bout to upgrade to the 240R! This guy sold me. 😂
thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i always used to just use my bosses stuff and let him worry about maintenance but now im the boss :D
Been telling people this for decades and nobody listened. The biggest problem I have is the fact that 90% of these young kids selling these now in stores have 0 clue what they're actually selling and they know nothing about care or maintenance of them as a result. Just want your money and out the door you go. I'm also guessing part of that is done intentionally so as you break your trimmer and then need yet another new one in a yr or two and guess what? Your warranty is 100% VOID because YOU failed to properly take care of your product.

Neither of the two dealers I have purchased any of my Stihl products from have never mentioned anything about the grease ports. Don't fret though I continuously maintain my equipment and I also read the manuals to all my equipment. But not all Stihl trimmers have the port only the commercial line does. The residential ones do not have the provision but you can grease them it takes some time but it can be done... My FS91R is 7 seasons old and the only thing I have ever done is grease the head every three months and clean it top to bottom twice a season.... Even my FC96 Edger 4 seasons old. All my Equipment is Stihl It might be pricey but it worth every penny I have made and will make. I love my Babies !!!

I have a STIHL FS70R any ideas on how to grease the gear heads on those? The FS56RC-E is the same way the gear heads have no external grease cap screw. I recently rebuilt an FS55R to the point it looks factory new and the OEM gear head on it is able to be greased.

I've never put lube in the gear head. Thanks for the alert. Thankfully I just use my FS90 a few time a year. I think I bought it in 2016. It bogs down more than I believe it should. Probably because the gear head is dry.

Also you probably need to do a valve adjustment and might have to tweak the carb settings a little. If the gear head is pulling it down chances are it will need more than grease. But never hurts to grease them at least once a year or maybe more depending on how much you run it.

Edger too (FC 90). All done. Thanks for the tip. Used very little grease which is a good sign.
I don't get what's hidden about the gear grease hole. Some guy wrote in the comments that there is not a single word about it in the manual. I own a Stihl FS65-4 and it clearly says to take of the screw, screw in the tube and press the grease inside. Even if it's not in the manual, it's not difficult to understand what's that hole for.
I have a KM 56 RC. ¿Where do I put the grease?
I have a FS 56 RC and I can't find any kind of hole to pit in grease. There is a nub there on the head where a screw would go but it isn't machined out. Does this model need greased?
@daveschidlmeier6425

Can or should you drill a hole in that flat spot where the access hole use to be. And install a grease zerk fitting to lubricant the gear box?
I bought a Kombi edger attachment in December 2022 and there is no screw as shown to grease the gears. You have to remove the edger device and where the shaft attaches is where you put grease.
I "follow" Chickanic and read her arti cles always and told/advised to grease the head and on models "without", ( yes some models do Not have the screw hole)!
Wish u were my neighbor. Love your videos
For curved shaft trimmers, the spindle bearing has a hole to grease it. That hole is the screw hole that holds the bearing in the shaft. 🙂
I have an fs240r my gearbox has no visible grease screw. What's the deal with that?
