You rock for sharing. I've been trying to figure out how to do this for a new home I'm building.
beautiful! I love that you incorporated original material. I love it! well done!
Hey Matt. Just stumbled across your channel. Was looking at the trim less door on another video. I enjoy doing hidden access entry points, via book shelves or panels. The craftsmanship of you and your crew is inspiring. Glad to see some guys still give a damn.
As a contemporary architect, excellent execution of contemporary details. Keep up the great work and the great video communication (careful of focus). PS, Ignore the ignorant.
Thanks so much. I did this exact treatment to my sons room. On his shiplap wall there is a closet that we placed the shiplap on as well and need it to be invisible. I am working with soss to see about the right hinge and hopefully soon it will be flush just like your water closet. Hoping my carpenter can work it out on our 1930's home.....Thanks for sharing.
The author does like to from scratch, kzread.infoUgkxbnOKZBE4evMO5V2vroHeCjq6d_MV6wJO shaping and trimming wood from large blocks into fine finished products. As another reviewer mentioned, most projects require a lot of high-dollar equipment that most of us don’t have the room or budget for. But, knowing how to do these things, even if we won’t be able to practise the full stack project, is still great.
Great video! Soss hinges put to great use, as they were intended! You do a fine job of explaining, and illustrating the how-to's and the results attained. I look forward to you doing one on the new Soss UltraLatch doorknob.

They should have made the joists run vertically do that the door jam would look hidden

It looks like the horizontal orientation of the wood planks is a key design element that is carried out in other parts of the home. This suggests that such linear orientation was important to the designer in achieving a particular result (such as visually lengthening a room or rooms) that was more important than fully concealing the door. A broad number of design considerations come in to play when doing sophisticated remodels such as this.

I enjoyed your video. Thank you!

Thank you so much for video. I love doors like that
Elegant... brilliant... everyone needs doors like this. Why have anything else?
Time traveling! Good vid. progress
Thanks Matt... Where do you recommend we get these types of doors? I contacted a few of the box stores but they aren't sure how they are construction and could receive a deep routing for the hinges... Thanks again.
really beautiful work! are in the thought of redoing a room in the cellar into sort of a hidden workshop so looking up some great ideas to apply to it especially the door. I was abit confused when you said stardrive screws before I knew it was the torx becaue star is what we call phillips over screws over here in sweden and I really hate that bit pattern :P torx are the best screws and bits ever made!
Hi Matt, watched all of your (great) videos and can’t quite get the info I’m looking for. On a door like the one to the toilet area, what does the jamb door stop detail look like? Everything looks flush in your videos, like there is no stop, but that can’t be.... Thanks!
and this is our approach to our closet door. thanks for the video!
This is a great video, If you guys had place the planks vertically, there's no way someone would know!
great idea on showing finish and working backward. Kind of like Breaking Bad!!! Hey you have my MovinCool stuff. Good for you. Found out they're great for dehumidification. Nice job. Idea maybe have your web site link and the architect's link in the description.
I learned a ton from your videos - everything from hidden door hardware to insulation. The attention to detail is incredible. Do you use any particular door gaskets or seals in your projects? It's been hard to find interior door brands with a focus on sound proofing. Thanks for sharing all of these videos!

+Matt Risinger So far the best I have found is Trustile MDF doors (www.trustile.com/technical-information/sound-doors) and sound proofing hardware from Zero International (www.zerointernational.com/catalogpage.aspx?pageID=54). Keep me posted!
Hey Matt great videos.I am actually doing a hidden door need to add 3/4 paneling to a slab its an outswing would this hinge work?
Since the door opens in, you could have had an overlap board so you don't have a vertical line on both sides of the door. I want to do that for a gun closet but it opens out. That gets tricky.
Another great 1. I've got this saved. Great look with the ship& tile. Looks incredible... Send me a link for these hinges, and your fav brand of pocket doors plz. If ya get a chance, it'd b greatly appreciated..

Can you show how you cut the shiplap for the door to open? Seen the hinge brand many many times but never a full step by step start to finish
What manufacturers are still making solid doors? Does anyone have any recommendations?
you should have laid the shiplap vertically to hide the seam.

Matt Cy 😂👍👍
First, I'll say that overall, I love the bathroom and I love the use of the original materials in this way. However, I have two nitpicks. (1) the seams don't line up. They care close, but off enough that I would focus on it and not enjoy the otherwise nice work. Second, although an in-swing normally makes sense, what happens if someone collapses inside this room? There appears to be so little room that it could be impossible to open the door.
You mentioned using a stave core door can you tell me were you get your doors
Hi I need to replace my swing out garage doors with new swing out doors. OUr garage is not attached to our home. What type of wood would you recommend and do u have any suggestions as to who could provide quality work at an afforadable price? We live in New Jersey. Thanks
is like to try this with the wood vertical to see if it might hide the line
Hi Matt I know Im 5 years down the line but why the heck did you never use the Souber door mortice lock jig for your SOSS hInges Best wishes Tim Hayes
Question. Can the spring side of the auto closet hinge be sunk into the door rather that the wall?
Cool door, I dont see any stopper when the door close. Usually i see a lip on the side of the door. whats the trick with this one?
Can the soss hinges be installed on the inside or outside of the door to open in or out and not hit the jam
how many of the self-closing hinges did you use? i only saw one. does the food but right up against the jamb or is there at least 1/32” or 1/16”. ??? does the door open all the way 180 degrees or is it limited ?
You can go with a sandwich door just fine, it's just that it needs to be the kind that's designed to accept these types of hinges. Harder to find, but not impossible. It makes the hinge life expectancy shoot considerably, and, bonus, no warped doors. Which the solid ones tend to do years after installation, if they don't come warped already. And boy, let me tell you, having to comb cut a solid oak door so you can make it pliable and then glue a fascia on that side is not an easy job.
Matt Risinger Would the best way to hide that line (cut) in the door is to cut more and make it look like a bunch of squares? (Sorry I don't know the proper terminology)
Can the closer be bored into the door if you don’t have room in the jamb or would that make it open instead of close ??
Might have been interesting to cut more slits into the wood so it looks like a design, almost checkerboard.
What is the most appropriate lockset for hidden bedroom doors?
love it
what kind of solid core door are you using?
I'm pretty sure the spring of that closer is supposed to go into the door.
Hi, I see your left hand side of the door is a nice snug fit when closed....how did you avoid the door edge hitting the door jamb when opening? As with our trial so far with the Soss hinges it appears to open on a slightly greater radius than desired so the front left corner of the door edge hits the jamb.
@buildshow

+frc18 You need to backbevel that door by 5 degrees.
The only thing that gives you away are these vertical lines oh & the smell because I don't think there's gaskets or negative pressure airflow.
I don't know how to pose this question except to say that without any tools or will know how my dad built in a bunch of shelves and drawers and everything into a VW classical bus for road trips and camping and now that he's dead I can't ask him about how he did the cabinet so that the hinges kind of swivelled and then went in to save space and also to make things more safe.. it wasn't pretty but it was cool cuz you onion or hunting hooked a cabinet door and it had a hinge so that you could pull it up and then slide it in. and you could also pull something out and have like a little writing desk. So I'm looking for something like that. 360 ball hinge maybe. so you can turn that sled of wood anyway you want and could have lock it so it could be like a desk and then to put it away you it just rotated and put it back down and that would be secretly hidden again. like I said not a carpenter and don't have every tool in the book and I think that's what you need cuz my God my family built some amazing things with little to nothing and for nothing. I was just really hopeful that you might need me so I can make improvements to things but actually I would love to make my night stands that would have a invisible pull out bed desk and also be able to change the doors on my kitchen cabinets to make them cooler. instead of finish on the side the other ones I would love to finish them on the top so you flip them up. what kind of hinges would I need for that? I really hope to meet some cool furniture and also love to make existing furniture with good bones make changes two existing furniture with great bones. I am desperate to also replace pull out drawers with those swivel drawers you just press on one side and it swivels open and I would like to replace my desk drawers and my nightstand drawers than others like that I love that and its space-saving and sometimes it's super necessary to not have pull out drawers. And I want to know how to do that and do it on a dime budget you know what I mean? So I'm asking about a 360 ball hinge if it exists I'm asking about how to make drawers into swivel drawers and also what kind of hinges to get so that I can use that for my highest cupboards that I want to slip up and not side to side. I hope you can help with a shoestring budget a girl who has some assembly required skills and a lot of imagination and work ethic. PS also the New York kind of girl as well fighting for every square foot and beauty and Imagination and Intrigue and luxury these things are really cool. I love things that are multi-functional and useful and I hope that I can make that in this messy comment
Hello Matt, do you know of any contractors who specialize installing hidden doors in Philadelphia?
Matt, how can I view the rest of the video? WE are doing some closet doors like this and my carpenter isn't quite sure how this will work. Your video was very helpful but it just ended. New to being a subscriber so maybe I'm missing something?

+Gdog123 Did you get it to work?
what is the gap (in mm) after the door is closed?
Could you have put the hinge spring inside the door, rather than the wall?
They could fit an acrylic mirror to the door. It would be more practical and achieve the desired objective.
@ingaramo

duncrunlad I thought about that for a second but then you're smudging the mirror every time you use the toilet. Also might not be a good place for a mirror, we didn't see what's opposite that door.
If The space Gives it away then ....Tada ...It is NOT a Hidden Door.
that line says door all over it, do some offset décor over that wood, at least try lol!
i always use spax best screws ever . but then again i live in germany you basically cant buy other screws here :P jokes aside i have been around the world and everyone who builds high end stuff uses spax screws german engineering also useful for screws

I was very interested in this hinge installation but the video was so shaky I had to watch it in pieces.
How much weight would the door hold? Lets say you don't want to make it look like a wall but more a hidden bookcase door... Would it hold the extra weight of the wood?
@MaZEEZaM

Yes, you just have to use appropriate bracing and appropriate hinges designed to have heavier loads.
I think you should put the spring into the door instead of the frame....
I am trying to install a Soss hinge in a minimum width door opening. I am making a secret door. What is the required minimum door frame width? I am using #218 in 30" door.
@buildshow

I'm not sure I understand your question. You can use these hinges in any door width opening. The minimum door THICKNESS is likely 1-3/8" . Best, Matt
@JMassey
10 жыл бұрын
I was talking about the framed door opening width. For instance with a 30" wide door, there will be a 1/16" gap on the hinge side by design of the hinges, but what is the minimum gap on the latch side to ensure that the door does not touch the jamb when opening? Thanks!
@buildshow
10 жыл бұрын
J Massey Ok got it. You should shoot for an 1/8" gap, but you may need to step back the door from the cladding by another 1/8" to allow swing into the jamb. Matt
Why did you not use a router to fit the hinges?It would have done a better job.

I agree with you. You can tell the people who don't build anything because they can't say anything constructive either.
if you could do it without the lines it would be more believable
I wonder why drywall screws don't work when not used not on drywall? Sarcasm. There different grades of screws for different things drywall screws serve one purpose and are not structural. This Old House just did a second on it.
"you're perfectly flush"
Shoulda off set the boards and made a oddly shaped door to blend in like a tile floor
Disappointing that it has the cut line. Would be perfect with the full length making it 'invisible'.
That's not hidden. I can tell there is a door there.
Can I use that soss hinge for a hidden bookcase?

+Matt Risinger With a regular hinge, if door opens inwards, and closes towards you, a wooden frame stops the door from moving further outwards. Is this hinge different in the sense that it prevents the door from moving further outwards when you reach full closure, i.e. a wooden stop frame is not required ? Thanks for your advice.
Everybody, yeah, rock your body. 1 2 ...All right!
Y'all commenting on placing the ship lap vertically....please stop. Thats not how ship lap works.
So you have to stand on the toilet to close the door before using it? Brilliant!
would have taken just a couple of minutes foe all four hinges
Why wouldn’t u offset your cuts? Would’ve hidden the seams
Piss poor job of hiding the door.
That jakes paul new house
obviously couldn't center the door in the wall because of the auto closer. too bad. otherwise I like the look.
“At $40 per hinge it’s a really good value”. 😂

That’s not secret
Who the F uses drywall screws to install door hinges?
...but why?
Stop shaking, i feel ill!
Badly done. If you would have skew the planks so there is not a gap in 1 straight line of the door. Then it would be invisible.
Basically a non-hidden door.
Hidden door my arse. Conceal the lines better
