I got one recently. It's cool to have but i agree it can be dangerous.Keep out of reach of children.Don't shine in mirrors, windows and other glassy objects that can pontentially reflect back into your or somebody's eyes.I don't shine it South outside my house cause we got multiple close neighbours.North of us is an open field which is perfect for using it as long it's clear of farmers.

Prolonged exposure to IR radiation causes a gradual but irreversible opacity of the lens. Other forms of damage to the eye from IR exposure include scotoma, which is a loss of vision due to the damage to the retina. Even low-level IR absorption can cause symptoms such as redness of the eye, swelling, or hemorrhaging

Survival Lasers (The company from the link you listed in the video description) has a pair of goggles that protect your eyes from these dpss lasers. They are only 60 bucks too, which is only $10-20 more than a pair that wouldn’t block unfiltered IR light. Just pick those “Eagle Pair® 190-540nm & 800-2000nm Laser Safety Goggles” even the $50 “190-540nm & 900-1700nm” pair would suffice.

So going out side in sunlight your eyes are exposed to a pretty high amount of IR I can't imagine a low powered green laser with some leakage causing issues unless you stare into the laser or a reflect into your eyes for a period of time. I mean if it was say over 100mw yeah get some protection but at the lower level doesn't seem like that big of a deal. I work with a lot of IR related stuff with satellites and I can say for a fact your more likely to damage your eyes being out in direct sunlight.

IR wavelength laser emissions, pointed from any distance into an eye, are going to be very likely most hazardous. When using these green laser devices emitting around 530 nm, of the power and technology you're discussing, and pointing the beam either into the night sky for amateur astronomy purposes, or bouncing its brilliance off a painted white interior wall surface, from say 5 to 20 feet away, under such conditions how would you judge safety? That is, when the beam will always be pointed directly away from any person's eyes? Very interested in the risk assessment for that type of use of these devices. Many thanks indeed for your excellent video presentation :-)

@@RAT_666 No answer. An answer is out there somewhere! My guess would be that bouncing high intensity green laser radiation off a reflective but diffusing painted white wall surface, from a moderate distance, is more than likely safe-ish-as it’s the focused, collimated beam that can burn? 🔥 I invested in validated eye protection to wear if using devices indoors for educational purposes.

Yes, for class 3B lasers or less than 500 mW, if the beam is fixed and shined to the wall, you should be safe. However, if you shined the laser to any glass e.g. a window, the IR laser may be reflected to your eye so, you need to be very careful on which surface you are lasing.

It can take a LONG time for regulations to catch up to technology...even decades. Sometimes just ignorance, sometimes political forces at work. Also, short-range scanners like those SHOULDN'T require much power at all, and the amount of time actually on a given spot on the retina would be minute. Such SHOULD be safe for even prolonged exposure at less than 2 feet...BUT for various reasons may be unsafe (including aging of things like capacitors used in the power regulation circuitry, or damage/misalignment over time of any optical filters on the scanning assembly).

Can looking at the beams and where they hit on these types of lasers shown be bad for your eyes unprotected? I'm not talking about a direct eye hit into the laser, just using the laser at other objects? I got one of these green ones off Amazon for 40 dollars and it's BRIGHT just looking at it hit the wall for example.

Doesn't this problem persist with red DPSS lasers as well? All of the models you showed come in red variants as well and they probably pump IR just like the green ones, only having a different gain medium to produce light at red wavelengths.

XM360, in this video kzread.info/dash/bejne/h4pt19FmgqTHqs4.html at the 9:30 mark. Where you wearing laser safety goggles when pointing the laser outside in the daytime? Or how about when you uses it outside at night? Where you wearing laser safety goggles then too? If so, then what kind where you wearing? Are there laser safety glasses that can block infrared light and that 470 nm blue light?
