While I agree with the sentiment that Lebanon and Yemen are honorable, most US citizens are in fact capable of understanding that. To write off US citizens for their government is the same concept as writing off Jews because supposedly Zionism represents them. Many US citizens are blinded by propaganda, but they are capable of seeing and comprehending. Most people are in fact decent people. From the river to the sea. 🇵🇸

@@daiyumyo Saying that most US citizens could never comprehend that Lebanon and Yemen are honorable. Saying that excludes US citizens, in other words, writes them off. US citizens are capable of comprehending/understanding honor in this way. Many are misguided by fiendish propaganda. Some are wisened to these lies, and they will not stand quiet. Those who are misguided can find truth, so we shouldn't be quick to write them off. Hopefully this clarifies anything you are confused about.

Sadly, the hbomb guy video also made some kids starting noticing citations in here not because of what you mentioned, but because of "plagiarism". I would just add that "pro democracy" being part of their platform now is convenience more than practical. Practical, democratic governance is slow and difficult and groups that have their roots in this type of resistance and militant origins don't like to truly maintain these stated ideals and they generally don't last. The reason is usually unwillingness to change their structure of command and control, among other things.

In all reality though, as the ottoman empires power shrank, there was an opening for new powers across the Middle East. Sadly, the fall of the ottomans was directly tied to the growth of colonialism, so every inch of territory the ottomans lost, the colonizers found one way or another. Even though there’s not many direct colonies anymore, the west has a stranglehold on the economies of these countries still as the industries of the colonizers never left. Now we colonize countries through colonizing their economies, not their territory (directly)

There are a few problems with your question. First of all, your time period is pretty broad. It includes the destruction of the Umayyad Caliphate and the destruction of the Abbasid Caliphate. I'm going to assume that you are essentially saying that the Abbasid Caliphate was a golden age, and that you aren't including 750 or 1256, but even that has some issues. The Abbasid period was very different in the beginning and the end, with the Abbasids starting out as emperors and ending up as mayors of Baghdad. It has been argued both ways that the captivity of the Abbasid caliphate was either an Islamic dark age and a period of enormous cultural flourishing. It depends on your perspective and what you think a "golden age" is. For me, personally, I think the idea of "golden ages" is highly suspect. They invite us to romanticise periods of history, rather than taking a nuanced and complex view. They invite us to identify with the people who actually got to experience the benefits of concentrated political power, higher education, and art patronage. To step away from the Middle East for a moment, I still wonder at the reverence we show to the European Renaissance- a period where poor people saw no real improvements to how they lived their lives and died in wars waged by bankers who commissioned a lot of self-aggrandising artwork from the handful of people who could even afford an apprenticeship to become a craftsperson. I think much the same can be said of Middle Eastern "golden ages". Ferdowsi writing the Shahnameh doesn't make the transition period from the Samanids to the Ghaznavids a golden age any more than Da Vinci's Last Supper makes a period of constant war between Italian states a golden age.

JT, i appreciate the information in this piece, but if i may suggest, please use language for your title that demonstrates opposition to and resistance against the isralie aparthide regime without infering potential existential threat to the people of the region. I understand the issue is nuanced, that limited time and resources make communication difficult, but Lebanon in general and Hezobola in particular aren't an existential danger to israel or its people. I'd love to have an in-depth conversation about this another time.

@MechanicalRabbits I agree with your general thrust and feel that it's important to not paint Hezbollah as a threat to people's survival. Differentiating the current isralie regime from the state as well as its citizens is really important. There are people both inside Israel and outside who reject the extremist ethno-state ideology presented by Netanyahu and his cabal. But if people think that Hezobollah either in part or in full poses a danger to the people of Israel, then it risks unintentionally demonizing them as opposed to seeing them as a group in the region concerned with the rejection of an aparthide regime in a neighboring country.

why do you care so much for the opinion of settlers? from time: "57.5% of Israeli Jews said that they believed the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) were using too little firepower in Gaza, 36.6% said the IDF was using an appropriate amount of firepower, while just 1.8% said they believed the IDF was using too much fire power, while 4.2% said they weren’t sure whether it was using too much or too little firepower." their opinion does not matter!

@arya-dl1ml I'm confused. What does a statistical breakdown of Israeli citizens' perception of the use of violence against the Palestinians in Gaza from an unknown source have to do with the way we talk about and perceive Hezbollah? If we were talking about Hamas, you'd might have a point, but I'm not seeing a connection.

One member of the Hezbollah Political Council, speaking to an Online Journal correspondent in July 2006, claimed that "Hezbollah differs from many Islamic groups in our treatment of women. We believe women have the ability like men to participate in all parts of life."[94] The Online Journal correspondent writes: "From its founding in the 1980s, Hezbollah women have headed education, medical and social service organizations. Most recently Hezbollah nominated several women to run in the Lebanese elections. It named Wafa Hoteit as a chief of Al Noor Radio ... and promoted 37-year-old Rima Fakhry to its highest ruling body, the Hezbollah Political Council. Part of Fakhry's duties include interpreting Islamic feminism in Sharia law for the Committee for Political Analysis."
