    I always thought Hillwood was somewhere in the east coast, mostly because characters like Ernie and Mr. Green had accents that sounded like they were from Brooklyn or Boston, plus the movie said the boarding house was built around the same time as the Revolutionary War, so it'd make sense it was somewhere near New England

    Growing up in Brooklyn all my life, I have seen a lot of "Hey Arnold!" in my hometown. Even the Chicago elements are here in Brooklyn as well. I have actually been to Chicago, and it almost felt like Arnold's Downtown Area. I always loved this show because a lot of it's New York elements shined above all the rest, and I felt like I was part of the world in an Odd way. Not only that, but I went to a School named PS.105 in my youth and that felt P.S.118 because of how close the numbers were.

    Craig Bartlett has said that Hillwood was set in the Pacific Northwest, either Washington or Oregon. But you are correct about the architecture. Craig Bartlett was a huge fan of brownstone type architecture. He used a lot of inspiration from Brooklyn and Chicago with elements of Portland.

    Sounds like Hey Arnold took some cues from The Simpsons, since Springfield on the show functions similarly as an amalgamation of different cultures and backgrounds as a way to represent America as a whole. There are so many Springfields in this country (I recently went to the one in Massachusetts for a concert), and the show intentionally made the clues of its town inconsistent and contradictory, such as in the movie when Flanders shows Bart their neighboring states which aren't close to each other at all. But the difference between Springfield and Hillwood is that there is a particular vibe with Hillwood that can be associated with a specific area, which I always believed was New York. The jazz, the streets, how close the houses and shops are to each other, how in tune with the area everyone is, it's all stuff I readily associate with New York.

  • @DialUpDigest

    @DialUpDigest

    2 жыл бұрын

    Very interesting, I've always been curious about the setting of The Simpsons as well. It really did have many similarities to Hillwood in terms of being a representation of a diverse America. True, I also feel like Hillwood had many features that were unmistakably New York. I was surprised when I found out the show isn't actually meant to be in New York but a mix of a few different cities including New York.

    The accents of the characters, the immigrant communities, the subway, the stoops, the buildings, yellow cabs...the show was set in New York - no question. Your arguments in favor of other cities are tenuous at best. In later episodes, the writers may have shoehorned references to other regions of the US but it was obviously originally written with NYC as the backdrop.

    I always enjoyed trying to figure out Nicktoon settings. Rugrats takes place 500 miles away from the Grand Canyon, short drive to Las Vegas, 12 hour train ride leads to Iowa and AGU episode RV Having Fun Yet confirms what state they live in. I think on Rocket Power, Ocean Shores is based on real life city Ocean Side, California and I think one time Raymundo said he was driving to San Diego. In Fairly Oddparents, Timmy said it was 6:04 but Vicky said it was 9:04 on the East Coast, definitely Pacific Time zone. More clues in Christmas Everyday / Niagara Falls - Turnbaum episode. I think on Doug, Bluffington is based on Richmond, Virginia.

    Fun fact: the creator of Hey Arnold, Craig Bartlett, is the brother-in-law of the creator of The Simpsons, Matt Groening, and similar to how Springfield is the average city in America with a name that appears in many states, also having a variety of landmarks that would typically not be located just in one city, the city of Hey Arnold draws inspiration from several uniquely American cities. Groening even taught Bartlett to make Arnold's shape unique, as if simply recognizable by a silhouette!

    I read that it was a combination of the three states a while ago. However, for my own interpretation, I always pinpointed Hillwood in WA just because Craig was born there. It's not a perfect fit, but neither are the other choices and that's okay. Not for nothing either, Phoebe also has a poster for a killer whale marine park and I believe it was said Tacoma (a place in WA) on the top. So it could have been a field trip out of state, but I still take it as another point for WA. Though I realize Hey Arnold wasn't ever meant to fit perfectly anywhere, I just prefer it in WA. The Pacific Northwest is also known for its crazy weather patterns, so it also fits WA or OR if you take into account the weather joke in Stinky's Pumpkin and seeing it as not as unlikely as you might think it is.

  • @DialUpDigest

    Right, none of the choices were a perfect fit, but I was leaning towards New York. I never noticed that Tacoma poster! 😮 Good eye! True, The Pacific Northwest has interesting weather, lots of rain. I don't remember it raining too much in Hey Arnold though.

  • @SMTH_After_All

    @SMTH_After_All

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@DialUpDigest No I suppose not, when it does it’s a big deal though like in Heat or The Flood. It may not rain much, but I like to think the random weather patterns in the Pacific Northwest are more relevant to HA in their time transitions, Stinky’s Pumpkin had rain, snow and drought all in one week. Not to mention the far fetched time Arnold had to wait for Agatha to open up in Crabby Author becomes more plausible if you believe the drastic weather changes took a week like in Stinky’s Pumpkin. I get Arnold’s a patient dude, but there’s no way the education system is going to wait for nearly a year, judging by the weather changes for Arnold to finish his assignment on his favorite author XD. In the end, I realize I’m grasping at straws though. New York makes just as much sense and that’s completely fine. I think my only other reason for preferring Hey Arnold being set in WA is because I want to link it to Party Wagon because I think it be interesting to utilize. It could never happen in reality because both cartoons are owned by different companies, but still fun to think about. Hillwood is still an interesting place regardless its state though.

    @@DialUpDigest it was also the 90's. I can only speak for NYC, but because of organizations like the Gardian Angels, and mayor Ed Koch, NYC became a much safer (and cleaner) place than it was in 70's and 80's. If you've ever seen the movie, The Warriors, that's what NYC used to look like. For the kids in the suburbs, they probably related more to a show like Doug. They had thier one hang out spot (Honker Burger), school, and home, and they drove cars everywhere. Typical suburban life.
