Why Hey Arnold Makes Us Nostalgic

Ойын-сауық

While some Nickelodeon cartoons like Avatar: the Last Airbender feel timeless, some cartoons feel designed to throw us back into a particular period of our lives, oozing with nostalgia. Hey Arnold is one of those shows. Why does the setting, stories and wonderful cast of characters such as Arnold, Gerald, Helga, Grandpa Phil and Gertie give off such a strong sensation of the 90s and 2000s? Well, let's talk about why Hey Arnold makes us nostalgic!

The interesting thing I love about Hey Arnold is while Arnold is the main protagonist in several episodes, certain episodes in the series also focuses on the other characters in the cast such as his friends, his neighbors, his grandparents and the people around his neighborhood as well as having them or Arnold deal with everyday issues that we experience in our actual lives.

Nickelodeon back then in our childhood was legitimate LIT especially the Movies in the mid 2000’s, and for Hey Arnold it really brings out a lot of information facts that deals with making friends, dealing with family issues and helping people in real world.

Hey Arnold honestly is one of VERY few shows that I would like to see a sequel series for with the characters aged as adults. I think the characters and world are so fully fleshed out that it would be interesting to pick up and explore how these dynamically diverse children grew to become adults. I even think a mini series (4-8 episodes) would be dope cause id rather see how these very symbolic 90’s kids grew to become adults of the new millennium.

Why do “Hey Arnold: The Jungle Movie “and “Dora the Explorer and the lost city of Gold” have the same plot. A classic Nicktoon revival movie where the main character and their friends go to find their lost parents in an ancient Mayan and Incan inspired lost city. The villain is someone posing as the lost parents best friend to get the treasure of the lost city. There is also a romantic subplot and a third act breakup where the friends lose trust in the protagonist.

I haven't seen the Dora movie but someone probably realized it but both might have been too far in development to change one or the other. You could also say that the audiences might not mix as much. Dora seems to be very kid oriented but with jokes that might make it bareable for parents (judging by the trailer iirc). While the Jungle movie seems to target older fans growing up with the show. Which I guess did work on me.

RE: Gerald they could have had a diverse writing room in order to have those stories told, even if they weren’t Gerald’s story because in all reality it is a breath of fresh air to not see a Black character written simply to struggle... but because there are those that do and did in the past it would have been good to incorporate. But hindsight is 20/20 and I still really enjoyed Hey! Arnold. ❤️

I never thought about how it’s time period affect the characters struggles and perspectives, especially compared today. Thanks for sharing. I do think that the beauty of it is not lost though as I didn’t grow up in the 90’s and never felt anything was missing from it. I also think that if they deliberately leaned into the new age, telling stories with what makes the world now different, primarily technology, it COULD work. For instance, as he mentioned in the video Helga could join an online community, but given that aggression is her learned behavior she could be given to becoming a troll. Or the classic falling in with the wrong crowd story, but told with social media. I don’t think they need to reboot it or change it but they COULD make it work.

I'm also on board for a reboot of some sort. I defintely think there are more stories to tell after the jungle movie and with the world we are living in now, I think it could adapt perfectly. But if does not include the creator of the show(Craig Bartlett), that's where I draw the line.

  • @andrewgarrett1356
    @andrewgarrett13563 жыл бұрын

Nostalgia is definitely a big part of the reason why I love Hey Arnold! so much, but I can honestly say that it's just a great show all around. I do get what you said when you pointed out how the modernization that we saw take place in The Jungle Movie seemed natural, but at the same time a little out of place. That's why I think a lot of reboots of old shows, especially cartoons fall flat. People try to adapt the story to the current times, and it either feels weird or maybe even a little preachy depending on the themes and issues the reboot tries to tackle. I honestly wouldn't want a Hey Arnold! reboot because the story is already done, and I don't think there's a better way to tell it. Having said that, I do view Craig of the Creek as a kind of spiritual successor to Hey Arnold! mainly do to the fact that it's able to portray a story from a kid's point of view in this era. The way the kids interact with each other feels realistic because kids play by their own set of rules and live in their own world whenever they hang out with their friends, and the way they make use of smart phones or talk about specific pop culture references is a perfect reflection of real life.

To be honest I really wanna see more of Arnold taking the lead and watching them go at each other. Being more assertive and rough, not letting helga escape, chasing her down. Pin her so she gonna listen to him tell her to do the right thing and be a good girl. I wanna see dark Arnold confidence and take a stand, get her all flustered, studering & mumbling her words. Arnold not giving up whenever she pushes him away or trys to distance herself from him. Arnold teasing helga, Getting her all shy& blushing, I wanna see them growing to understand one another way better. Have more heart to heart chats and for Arnold to actually see helga, because she's a complicated girl with very strong feelings/emotions, she'll go the distance for those she loves and cares about. I'd love to see Arnold secretly listening in to helga say her poems speeches of love for him, seeing him run into her on purpose to catch her and hold her hand. I would love to see Arnold taking chances to catch helga off guard to see her all bashful & flustered. Etc Helga and Arnold joining forces to cause positive impact, whenever helga tries to be chaotic, Arnold will be the the positive natural. That'll bring helga down to earth, etc

I don't think any other cartoon on any channel at that time had so much depth to it's characters. _Avatar: The Last Airbender_ and _Gravity Falls_ are the only shows that have ever surpassed _Hey Arnold!_ in the decades since. No other has even come close. What's also remarkable is how Hey Arnold had no overarching story tying it all together. It was just a series of short stories, each a day in the life of the characters. Even Arnold's quest to find his missing parents was just one story out of hundreds told over the course of the series. That is an incredible feat, keeping the audience invested using the characters alone, with no main plot to tie everything together.

I honestly think Hey Arnold is the 90's version of Steven Universe with a little less fantasy, and also the animated version of Friends. A lot of stuff from the 90's is nostalgic because we long for life to be simpler but also media from that time is sometimes problematic. Hey Arnold is top tier animation for me though - I love the feeling I get watching it.

I think modernizing the movie was a smart move. It's a Nik movie, more young kids were going see this than people who originally watched the show

This is a real show. More than a cartoon. The characters situations and locations are real. It's not three characters on almost blank background. The world presented in the show is huge and the characters are deep. It's treated like a real show.

I'd love to see a new cartoon with Hey Arnold's philosophy and truth but based on kids nowadays. I'm very curious about that, I mean I don't think today's kids are simple and empty as they are depicted in media

I was born in '98. Does that make me a 90s kid or just a person who caught a lot of 90s reruns? 😅😅😅
