They say when sculptor looks at a slab of marble, he doesn't see a slab of marble. He sees the statue in it. We could probably say the same for Iskall with bumbos in blocky buildings.

Add shoulders iskall. The reason for it looking slightly obnoxious is because it doesn't have shoulders. Trust me. Paws are too big compared to the body, but adding shoulders should help make it look more pleasing

Sphinx bumbos are known to have a thing for late 80s / early 90s fashion. So don't just add shoulders. Add an obnoxiously bright blazer with a cinched waist and comically large shoulder pads.

I love how the Sphinx turned out, I think that it really seems to tie everything in the village together. Also love your season so far.

With the face going more to the front the paws will look less like giant logs, so just bring the head out a little more and it'll be fine

A sphinx is a mythological creature that is usually composed of a large cat with a human head. In the older Greek myths, sphinxi would guard paths and ask riddles of people who pass by. If they failed, they were eaten, if they succeeded, the sphinx would allow them to pass.

Stress works on iskall's Sphinx while he goes to bed. Sounds about right.

I think Xisuma was referring to his work he has done with the pirate district. He replaced the dirt en gravel under water with sand, made bridges so you can walk to each island and added some palm trees based on your design.

Put a difficult riddle in front of the sphynx with a vending machine style redstone design, where the answer to the riddle is an item you have to put in the hopper, a wrong item will treat you to happy fun sauce or an arrow barrage or something equally as deadly, and the right item will open a door you can restock with treasure.. 🤗

Iskall the sphinx is a great idea! And yes they do exist in real life: they were built as guardians of the pyramids. Also, I really think you should add a nose to the sphinx! I know that in almost all reference material it doesnt have a nose, but thats because the noses wore off over time as they were too heavy to be standing on their own. But since youre kinda making an old egyptian styled city, I'd say adding a nose would be very fitting.

Pareidolia is a psychological phenomenon that causes people to see patterns in a random stimulus. This often leads to people assigning human characteristics to objects. Usually this is simplified to people seeing faces in objects where there isn't one.

As a curiosity, th sphynx were built by the egyptians in a reddish colour that still can be sean in very small percentages of the sphynx and the gold and blue "cape" although the erosion from the sand that flew with the wind have eroded most of the colours, this is also the cause for the sphynx to have no nose (its usually said that it was caused by Napoleon´s troops as a shooting practice, but its very far from the truth)

Contentious but fun fact: The Sphinx could have been made with the head of a jackal... specifically Anubis, God of the Underworld. The book by Robert Temple, "The Sphinx Mystery: The Forgotten Origins of the Sanctuary of Anubis" is an interesting read. He's a bit of a conspiracy theorist, but he does raise some interesting questions.

Love the sphynx iskall. Yes the paws are kinda "long" but its a very good idea. Its like how actual villages should spawn. With all the details. Good job.

I LOVE the idea of the sphinx, especially making it into a minigame/quest for other hermits. I think the paws/arms will look better once you build the body. Looking at pictures the colours are made in horizontal lines, so maybe try that?

@iskall85 The goatee you're talking about is actually a fake beard. The pharaohs from Egypt wore it, just like the cape-thing (Nemes in egyptian). The real Sfinx can be found near the pyramids of Gizeh in Egypt. It's a lion with a pharaoh's head.

Looks good! I love Sphinxes and I like riddles too. As for the shop inside, sell sand... lol you have plenty of it "lion" around.

It would be so cool if you put up a riddle and use Redstone so that if a hermit gets it right and inputs the correct item, they get a treasure. You could put the coordinates in the shopping district and open the challenge to everyone. If the hernit gets it wrong, an anvil falls on their head.

Taking more inspiration from the HoMM series, you could do sand obelisks in the sand kingdom, that all have a small crypt underneath that house a map, or lore of some kind.

Brian is good at sphinxes. Also you should have the nose look like it has fallen off as a mod to the great Sphinx in Egypt. You could also put an oasis between its paws.

Wow I don't think I've ever heard anyone mention Heroes of Might and Magic II by name in public before that's amazing. I love that game.

It has paws and forearms, ... , a body and a head. I miss upper arms and shoulders to connect those, which would also gives the headdress something to drape over a bit.

the sphinx was an ancient greek mythicalmonster, that behaved similarly to the thing you described, but there was an egyptian monument of similar design.

I never played 5. I tried 1, but I couldn't handle not having a marketplace or being able to upgrade dwellings. I've never heard of Civilizations. Is that an expansion pack?

Love this vid! Have you thought of building a caravan? There could be a part of the city (maybe somewhere were the desert, the city and a harbor *hint hint* meet) that is a big, big basaar and there are lots of Llmas that carry stuff! A place where merchants arrive on boats and Llamas. With lots of armor stands. :D

I think once you add shoulders to the Sphinx, the scale of the paws will be perfect. It looks great, though! Can't wait to see Bumbo Sphinxoni

HermitCraft needs more cats! A desert village with a guardian sphinx is a great place for dozens of cats to wander.

Heroes of Might and Magic III is my favorite game. Never did finish HOMM II but I have fond memories of it.

Spinx nemes headdresses are traditionally blue to represent protection and/or inlayed with lapis lazuli (a protection stone plentiful in Egypt during Ancient Egypt). The yellow is traditionally gold to signify the god Ra/Amun/Amun-Ra and his power over all creation. As red follows your color scheme, it would not look out of place. Red was used in Ancient Egyptian times to symbolize life (as Iset, the Goddess of Magic and protection is believed to have bled onto Osiris to raise him from the dead, and also bled when giving birth to their son, Horus.) Also, you should try some shoulders on that Sphinxioni. Not having any may be why it is looking horrible in your eyes. You may have to adjust your sphinx's chest as well once the shoulders are in, as well as raise it's neck and head in terms of height, otherwise they're proportionate so far. I used the Sphinx row in Luxor as a reference for critique. Lots of Google images on them.

Heroes of Might and Magic is the og. I love it. My uncle showed and bought it for me and i love it. :)

Its called a headdress. The paws are too long but as mentioned in another comment adding shoulders could help make it look more proportional.

I didn't think the build was stupid, even though I suspect the face may yet be silly. I think it was smart, and planned or not, it's in the west where the sun sets and which is the land of the dead, so the placement is very appropriate, and I like how it is also aligned with the town.

14:38 Actally it makes sense to me, you are making a sphynx whit a pharao head. The goatty beard was a long fake beard of goat hairs pharaos used to wear.

You should put a secret entrance in the mouth of the sphinx, that leads to a storage vault or something, or a ritual ground.

I once made a Sphinx about 3 years ago. And it was one of my most proudest projects ever. 😅 It was literally massive. I made it to reach the block limit back in 2015. I kinda wanna go revisit it and maybe challenge myself to make a newer and more modern-ish version. Especially now that there are new blocks, new height limit, and etc. I've always loved Egypt. But I prefer my home here in Japan. 😂

The body of the sphinx could house an amazing super furnace! Like 64 or 128 furnaces!

I love it. I just wonder if there’s a good way to outline the feet a bit. They blend in too much with the surrounding sand.

In the Black Book, you could say "Grian- Failed due to client indiscretion". Check out the Hermitcraft Stock Exchange! Trading is booming there. I would love to see some signs of a response from the sand people to the ice people sucking away all the heat with their pylons.

Why not put an entrance in each paw that leads into a labyrinth beneath the sphinx. Maybe throw in a puzzle and a trap too. Awesome work as always usually.

That's a fabulous Sphinx, with a mullet, if I ever seen one.

I would make the red and yellow of the goatee be banded horizontally. The way it is now looks more like a tongue than a goatee. The headpiece is great though

You should make the Sphinx riddle thing like docs trident store so the hermits pay like a lot of diamonds and if they don’t get it right they win nothing and die but if they do they get a big treasure and maybe even their diamonds back

You could try mixing in endstone brick, as it would work well on the structure you are building. Maybe try replacing the base with it?

Egyptian definetly, egypt is much much much older than greece

most sfinx statues are fairly small. some can be really small. The one you're thinking of and using as inspiration is the great sfinx in Egypt. It's the only sfinx that is so large and it was basically built in the middle of the desert long from nearest village or city. Something more accurate would be to build several smaller ones all around the city. And please don't build a pyramid unless you have a really good reason.

There is a building in the Medieval district where you can get two-tall flowers.

That headdress around the sphinx's head is called a nemes

Get inspiration from The Great Sphinx of Giza.

I think it would be better and easier if you shaped its face just like it was done on The Statue of Hermity - rectangular shape with a face of a villager. Also I believe the cape-like thing's stripes should go along with its body and not like they do now. If you continue as it is now you'll end up with the cape being completely yellow when looking from a side.

really need some depth to the build. the face should come out more from the headdress. the goatee part should hang free as well coming forward some more. the front limbs are a bit long maybe. looks similar to the one giza, but remember that one is heavily eroded and the arms were more protected than some of the other parts. looks up the sphinx of hatshepsut at the met museum for a cleaner looking historical one. also looking up Egyptian headdress of pharaohs might give you some help with the headdress. i think what you have is a good start. but the stripes are usually horizontal on the sides and vertical on the top. I'm curious which hermit is going to be the face tho.
