The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Best band of the 60s and all time! These guys are so freakin' adorable! Peter, Barry, Derek, Karl, & Keith are my music heroes.
Loved listening to Herman,s Hermits as a child. At 63, still do! The music today isn,t even music.

HH were great - but don't worry, there's plenty of good new music around (I'm biased because I'm making some of it - at 61 - I bet you'd like my original "I Met Her Yesterday")

I saw this on Ed Sullivan last night; did not remember the song. I never had a Herman's Hermit 45 or LP ~ but I like a lot of their songs.

Sounds familiar. I was ten years old in '65, and thanks to my older sister (six years older) I was immersed in the British Invasion from Day One. Loved that music then and love it now!
Sweet cut!! It's the British Invasion baby, DIG IT!!
I can hear the Buddy Holly influence.

There are a number of live Hermans Hermits performances from 1965 onwards available on KZread, and they come across as a very tight competent band, who would have been more than good enough to work in the recording studio. I know, like the Monkees, session musicians were used initially, but the Hermits were allowed to play on recordings later in their career'
My Husband resembled Peter Noon very much. I fell head over heels for him a first sight. It was lovely back then.
A fun song by Herman's Hermits! It charted at #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #15 on the UK Singles chart in 1965. The actual date of this episode is October 24, 1965. The date in the description at this writing is a re-run broadcast.

I was at Herman's Hermits rehearsal for Ed Sullivan Show in Sept. '66 when they sang "Dandy" and other songs. My Dad was the Production Supervisor on Ed Sullivan back in those days.

Actually, 1966 is probably an accurate year. CBS was starting to videotape the Ed Sullivan Show and other shows in color in 1966. If The Beatles had agreed to appear on Ed Sullivan's show in 1966, many people would have seen them live in color for the first time.

@@amb2745 The show began to be broadcast in color in the Fall of 1965, one week after the last appearance by the Beatles on the show.

@@jamescalifornia2964 Few points, I know the sound of the instruments on the actual recording, and the sound is definitely different and live. You can definitely see the wires from the guitars from the bass player and rhythm guitar on left. Plus, watch the rhythm player strum on his up picks. The sound is right in sync with the music. I admit that some groups did play only semi live on Ed Sullivan, or they prerecorded the instruments prior to the performance, while they sung live.

it doesn't get any better than that! great find .
Always a fun group to listen to! Visually, this is quite interesting. With the gray backdrops and flooring, and the dark suits, the production appears to have been designed with black & white televisions in mind. Very curious in a time when the networks were heavily advertising their color content.

This was from one of the very first color episodes of the Sullivan show, taped in CBS's Hollywood studio. The very next week it switched back to New York where the Ed Sullivan Theatre had been equipped for color production, and using brand new Norelco color cameras, which were half the size of the huge RCA TK-41s, which CBS hated having to use as RCA owned their arch rivals NBC. I'm guessing CBS hadn't completely finished fitting out the studio for color, hence the grey backdrops. Interestingly, the last black and white Sullivan show featured the Beatles performing live during their 1965 US tour. For some reason they didn't perform on Sullivan on their 1966 tour, maybe Epstein wanted too much money, or Ed was worried about the public backlash following John Lennon's remarks about the Beatles being more popular than Jesus, which ironically was probably true at the time. Fortunately we got to see them in glorious NTSC color later that year in Tokyo, when Japanese TV taped two of their concerts at the Budokan, which also caused of lot of controversy.

Such a beautiful song, and definitely has an amazing Buddy Holly inspiration 🎸 🤓

They came across as very clean cut and non-threatening, but they were anything but when they were on tour, especially in the US. i wouldn't be a bit surprised if there were a few little hermits running around today!
Thank you for sharing, very good show, greetings!
Peter Noone has a show on the Sirius-XM 60's channel on Saturdays. He's pretty entertaining telling his war stories as he DJs songs from the 60s.

Yup, they were a real rock and roll band, and many of their songs were quite good, including this one. I think people who put them down are judging them based on "I'm Henry the VIII I am" and assuming they were just a novelty band. But that just isn't true.

It was an A-side. Released two months after Henry VIII. Made it to #7 in the U.S. charts. B-side to this single was another good song, Sea Cruise.
Derek Leckenby was unfairly treated by Mickie Most.
Good live performance, but the camera work is terrible. Almost never showed the lead guitar player at all.
Kind of like a proto-Ramones.
