The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

The drummer, John Barbata, created and played some of the most tasteful and unique drum fills of that time. Both he and Dino Danelli were two of the most creative and unique drummers of that time, who added so much to their respective bands...The Turtles and The Rascals.

One of my favorite groups of the '60's! Love their happy carefree sound! The Turtles made two appearances on the Sullivan show. On this first appearance, they sang "Happy Together" and "She'd Rather Be with Me", the latter of which has already been posted, and is really fantastic too! "Happy Together" went to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and was written by Garry Bonner & Alan Gordon. Fantastic post! Also, I've wanted to mention this for a while, to anyone who is interested, I'm the same Tom Smith who has been posting comments since near the start of the channel. When YT changed the handles, I chose Tom Elvis Smith as my new one because I thought it sounded more memorable than plain Tom Smith. :)

By 67, some groups still played totally live (Doors, Cowsills) while others did live vocals over pre recorded backing tracks (Stones). I’m not sure who made the decision as to who did what. The live stuff was so much better and it’s a shame they phased it out.

This was probably more a function of the musical and instrumental complexity of the songs being performed than a strict policy by the Ed Sullivan Show. It's also helpful to remember that studio recording technology during this era was advancing at such a rate that sounds were being created on record that couldn't easily be recreated in live performance. Heavy-production songs like "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" or "Good Vibrations" would've been all but impossible to perform live without the aid of some pre-recorded tracks. It would be interesting, though, to know who most often had the final say as to whether a backing track would be used or not.

Although it cannot be said that they were a One Hit Wonder band, this song is the one that truly identifies and places them in the history of pop music, and that ultimately led to their commercial resurrection after some beginnings, in the mid-60s, not very flattering. The song was written by Alan Gordon and Gary Bonner, who were then still members of The Unkown Magicians. "Happy Together” went to number 1 in the US and made them popular around the world. The song perfectly illustrated the group's sensational sense of rhythm and the phenomenal vocal harmonies of Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman. “She'd rather be with me” (number 3 in the US and number 4 in the UK), performed in this same episode and published some time ago on the channel, was another of the hits that the Gordon-Bonner duo wrote for The Turtles. From other authors I highlight "She's my girl" (composed by those who would later make up the male half of the famous ABBA) or "Guide for the married man" (composed by the brilliant John Williams that you all know, and what is part of the soundtrack of the same title's comedy). These and other songs established the group in the elite of American pop. However, they no longer repeated a hit like "Happy Together" and before the end of the decade they officially disbanded, culminating one of the shortest careers in the pop elite. If you wish, you can enjoy two very different versions of this song on KZread, by Petula Clark (1969) and Jason Donovan (1991).
