Why this is the most disturbing scene of Breaking Bad
One day RIan Jonshon decided to direct one of the best scenes of Breaking Bad, and today we will talk about it: the scene in which Walter, after talking to Saul, and being threatened by Gus, discovers that Skyler has given him all his money. We will talk about the direction, the editing, the form, the sound, in this educational video essay that seeks to delve into the terror of cinematic language.

Not my own observation, but something worth mentioning: Skylar begging with Walter that she did it for the family flipped Walt’s narrative on himself, and for a brief second Walter gets to experience what he did to his family this entire time.

The phone call is also important because it means Saul made the call and it can’t be taken back, which means Gus will know that Walt tried to interfere, which means now Gus will 100% go after his whole family

Bryan's acting in this scene was just SO GOOD. The fear, the screaming, and the laughter afterwards. It was beautiful.
There’s also a very simple aspect of the scene, like the crawl space feels like hell itself, (it’s literally a basement) and Walt just finally descends into it. Like some sort of demon of greed. Also this was really good you’ve earned a sub!

Totally! And thanks!
I absolutely love how the roles completely flip in this scene: Walter just wants to keep the family safe, and Skyler confessed that she did illegal things for her family
I feel like it's such a cliche at this point to praise Breaking Bad for the masterpiece that it is, but every analysis I watch just reveals new layers of brilliance that I never even considered before. This show was something truly special.

It's never a cliche to praise a great piece of work - the feeling of being astounded can never be a cliche as that feeling of "wow" is rare in most creative works. The reason I first hooked onto Breaking Bad was because I saw some repetitive social media talking about an important reveal (probably Gus Fring's exit). And when I finally decided to check the show out, I couldn't believe I'd been missing out on some of the BEST television I'd ever seen. The biggest irony was I instantly became addicted to the series, just like people became addicted to to the high quality blue meth Walter and Jesse cooked.
The editing of this video is insane. High quality editing on top of incredible analysis. Bravo

The transition from utter sorrow laughter was perfectly executed, but what really sold it to me was the one moment between his hysterical laughter, he twitched involuntarily and it freaked me the fuck out. Its the moment before the camera closes in in Skylara face in horror. I was freaked out, too. I was horrifed. Also, in awe with Brian Cranstons performance. Just brilliant.

Been pouring over your channel after an algorithm recommendation, liked em all and subbed! Only recommendation would be spell check (eg: teLLephone) pronunciations, and audio seemed off on some of the footage of yourself (don't forget to "slate" or clap to get them synched. Commenters will be all over it I'm sure. I for one don't really care because of how more the rest of it all comes through as polished with your essay takes and the added footage. Seems like you actually paid attention in film class. ;) Cheers! PS: I may have missed the joke originally about teLLephone being a play off of lanceLLoti, so... there you go, works either way. ;)
the angling is a lot like her looking down on him like a body in a grave when he is in the crawlspace. it feels like someone upset like staring at a body in a funeral especially with walter's positioning.
Damn. I wrote a whole multi-page essay on this scene and honestly your analysis blew mine out of the water. This is an awesome piece of work.

when i first watched this scene it made me go wide eyed and silent for the whole duration lol, they did a really, really good job transmitting the utter hopelessness walter felt at that very moment
Everyone's obssessing over that last line ("If the lab was Heisenberg's coffin, this moment was Walter White's"). Well, so am I. Brilliant.
That scene where Skylar pulls away from the crawlspace door reminded me of the tenseness of The Shining with Nicholson. That music just sets the scene so well. Just brilliant.

I don't know anything about cinematography and yet this was very easy to follow, very insightful and very entertaining throughout. You will be one of the greats
This scene actually did a better job at kicking in my fight or flight instincts and making me uneasy than many horror movies I’ve watched. I remember feeling so disturbed and uneasy watching it that when the episode ended, I had to put on KZread to distract myself from what I was feeling. That angle of Skylar looking down at Walt along with that steady thumping and Marie telling Skylar, “It’s happening again.” - all of it just feels so disturbing
Wow....I never connected that last transition.... thank you. This most definitely was a disturbing episode....physically, emotionally, visually......I loved the way you broke down the sound aspect.
I just have to point out, that the clothing bag at the beginning looking like a body bag, it really cements the statement of “tomb-feeling” imo
6:14 "Telephone" has one "L"
some really good editing choices here. keeping the soundtrack going when you pause the clip is brilliant

The sound design and soundtrack of Breaking Bad is really good aswell. This moment and the part at the end where Walter kills Jack stands out as incredibly unnerving pieces; somewhat Silent Hill-esque.

Brilliant analysis with a well executed video.

This scene is pure perfection. We all knew it the first time we saw it.
Great analyses. You have another sub and like! This shows how much effort has been put into this series, Bravo Vince!
Good video, good analysis. Enjoyed.
Dude, these videos are insane quality. You're going to go places
The music is so amazingly haunting and really captures the doom and dread here
Excellent, *excellent* analysis, well done! The only small detail you didn't go over would be how Skyler is going numb when she first walks into the room, as indicated by the soundtrack and special sound effects, letting her hold from what is happening and disassociating. Walter screaming "Where's the money!?", breaks that fog and drags her back to reality, where she needs to focus and explain herself.
You earned yourself a new fan. impressive analysis
For a video of THIS quality it deserves 100x times the attention. but this is phenomenal i love how you approach these scenes in a much more deeper way than most compared to the generic "crawlspace tomb"
This channel is gonna take off soon. I'm glad to have been here
At the end, when the pulse starts to fade away and the white noise begins, makes me think that those are Walter's last heartbeats as Heisenberg is slowly taking over. The zoom out conveys the idea of Walter's soul leaving his body as well. A bit pretentious, i know, but i like to see it that way.

Great video man 👍
excellent video love it
The scream is the funniest thing ever because of memes when it's such a devastating moment
Great analysis, this is straight up horror movie filmmaking!! So sick. Walt is legitimately a monster here
Sound design really takes it to next level they used very little dramatic sound / music
I really like the fact your videos are kind olfshort. Hope for your grow on youtube !
You are gonna be big. This is amazing work
I still find the 737 down over ABQ final reveal to be the most disturbing scene, one because it actually shows the explosion which is not only grim but cool, but it also shows the teddy bear which indirectly says to the audience whether they want to believe it or not; there was innocent kids on the plane. spine chilling.
It was so dark and hopeless, and then Walt's laughter filled the air.... And I knew at that moment, everything was going to be okay.

Walt's brain just breaking at everything going wrong when even the money is gone crawling in the dirt under the house on his hands and knees after Gus threatened everyone. . . . . .Wife "No Sis, tell me about it, everything will be OK" like her husband is not having some kind of breakdown in the background. . . .The cinematography, the lighting, the editing, the time ticking away or was that my heart pounding through my chest?
I wonder if they shot this in the Netherlands because these shots are Dutch as hell. Also, 6:13 bro really spelled "telephone" wrong.
