Here's Why These '90s Sitcoms Were Actually Canceled

Ойын-сауық

The 1990s brought a tidal wave of sitcoms crashing onto television's shores. Some were amazing, some were terrible, but all of them, in time, came to an end. These are the strangest, most interesting, and most surprising stories of '90s sitcom cancellations, from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air to Frasier.
Freaks & Geeks transcended its sitcom status, ultimately becoming one of the defining teen shows of the 1990s. Unfortunately, much of its reputation is posthumous; it was canceled after one season and never given another chance by NBC.
The show debuted at 8 PM on a Saturday an awful time for a new show, especially one aimed at teens. Freaks & Geeks then changed time slot, hampering any chance at building ratings. The producers created a website, a rarity at the time for TV shows, to help fans keep track of when it was on. But NBC refused to put the URL on any commercials, lest viewers gravitate towards the web instead of TV.
There were also tensions between the producers and the network. NBC wanted a more positive show, while the producers wanted to keep things realistic. Executive producer Judd Apatow became particularly known for viciously defending his show to any and all network executives. In the end, the show was canceled, but its legend has only grown. Keep watching the video to see here's why these '90s sitcoms were actually canceled.

Btw, Frasier got screwed by NBC. They bowed down to Friends and said it was their best show ever. From what I’ve heard, Kelsey Grammer was insulted by this since he’d been loyal to the character and the network for almost three decades. He and the cast were insulted and angry over NBC’s attitude because to say Friends was the better show even though Grammer offered to take a pay cut while the Friends cast kept demanding more money per episode and almost got their show canceled due to their demands.

How ironic. NBC didn’t want people to gravitate towards the internet when it comes to Freaks and Geeks. Nowadays, if you look at networks like The CW, they’re more than happy to have people gravitate towards their website and apps. Maybe if NBC had embraced that feeling, they’d have been ahead of the curve. Now they’re trying to play catch up.

@Wynn Wynn nbc wanted more people on their network because that's where the ratings mainly were. Over the years, as we've seen with The CW and streaming, online viewing numbers are counting more as is money from streaming services like Netflix. It used to be syndication was where a lot of money came from. Streaming has replaced that and counts more.

"Seinfeld" ended, even though it rated well, because Jerry Seinfeld was both the executive producer, would write and review scripts for the show, and appear in "Seinfeld" and the workload was becoming too much. Jerry walked away from "Seinfeld" because he was burnt out and wanted more time on the road doing stand-up.

@@thisguyhere6641 I have a theory, now bear with me. I call it "The Power Of Eleven". Most shows finish at or before the end of an eleventh season. Ones which get to an eleventh season, and then end (often on their own terms) are remembered as classics. But if a show does a TWELFTH season, it starts to get stale, and any season after the eleventh sees a dip in quality, and it looks like it is being made simply for money, rather than any new stories to tell. Many people say that "The Simpsons", for example, was best in its first eleven seasons, but subsequent seasons have seen the quality and humor fall off, and now it is more embarrassing than funny. So, eleven seems to be the magical number for TV shows when it comes to how many are enough seasons for a show to still remain a classic.

Beats me why contracts salaries don’t reflect a roller coaster pattern. Start lowish, climb higher as the show’s ratings do well and by season 8- 10 salaries peak and start backing off. A popular t.v. show keeps plenty of people in work and the audience entertained.

Yup. It stands out because it just *does*... 'Frasier' was in some ways the best-written sit-com of the nineties, although '3rd Rock' runs it close, and pretty much blows everything else out of the water in terms of the concept. (Character development too). Kind of parallels 'Red Dwarf' in Britain. Totally different, apart from the space connection, but both went 'yeah, we don't care if the premise is ridiculous - what on earth is non-ridiculous comedy anyway?'

Strange and dumb reasons for show cancellations didn't just happen in the 90's. In the 60's,the head of CBS at the time saw that "Gunsmoke" had been axed because of poor ratings. Since it was his and his wife's favourite show, he demanded that they make more seasons, so that he could watch it. When told that there was no room in the schedule to put new eps of "Gunsmoke", the CBS boss axed the higher-rating "Gilligan's Island", because he didn't "get" the show's humor, and didn't like it, even though viewers did. So "Gilligan's Island" got axed because the CBS boss put his personal viewing preferences ahead of ratings.

Frasier was trying for a comeback series a few years ago. Would have been same sort of show, different city. Supporting character legacy of the dear-departed dad would have been carried forward by the sons. Kelsey said all the prospects were in place and all they needed was backers. Then news about it just stopped. Guess they gave up on that funding. This was before anyone reckoned with the pandemic, too.

TV series generally do tend to end, so if you make a segment in 2020 about why a number of 90s sitcoms ended, the general answer to why they have, is that it's 2020.

Seinfeld and Friends can say they went out on top and on their own terms. But they can't say they were at the same time slot for their entire run like Fresh Prince.

@@bobtwichew3103 As the video mentions, Fresh Prince was never afflicted with what usually happens to a TV show when it gets moved around the schedule. The issue that is essentially solved thanks in part to streaming services like Hulu. In the 80's and 90's, if your favorite show was moved and you didn't know, a quick look at a TV schedule was required. Maybe a at least a whole week. And that's if it wasn't put on hiatus or (gulp!) cancelled. Friends and Seinfeld are the exceptions, as they managed to thrive despite their schedule changes.

The original run of Twin Peaks ran only two seasons. Revealing who killed Laura Palmer too early was a mistake and future episodes were boring and had silly plots. The last few episodes were really good but by that time the ratings were so bad it was canceled. The third season on Showtime were excellent. Perhaps there will be a fourth season some day
