Here's Why The Yankees Traded For A Pitcher With A Career 5.59 ERA
Спорт
This video is all about Clay Holmes, a pitcher for the Yankees that began training with Tread in the fall of 2020.
Holmes ended up being one of the most underrated trades of 2021, who was scooped up by the Yankees despite sporting a career 5.59 ERA with Pittsburgh. He finished the year with the Yankees as one of the best relievers in baseball.
How did they spot this hidden gem? Tread coach Tyler Zombro dives into what the Yankees were likely attracted to beyond the ugly ERA numbers.

Man when I saw him throw bullpens on this channel and saw his stats, I knew that he was going to be good! Keep it up Clay and other Tread athletes!
That sinker is deadly. What’s crazy is how he got it from 94 to 98. I know it’s not his average but he hits 98 a lot.
I think the Yanks pitching coach has helped a good deal..Blake it top notch..
Great analysis. I'd be interested in seeing where those fly ball pitches were located and which pitches they were. Thinking about... Sinker pitchers locating the pitch down in the zone are going to get a lot of ground balls, specifically that pitch in that location the ball is moving away from the bat path and hitters are going to hit the top of the baseball very often leading to all that weak contact into the ground that your highlight video showed. (This can actually be trouble for infield hits...but that's another story.) A sinker (two seam) thrown up in the zone is going to tend to move "on plane" with the bat path and lead to more solid contact. Or even if he just has a natural sink on his fast ball which works so well when located down in the zone, becomes a liability when he tries to go up in the zone (which everyone has to do occasionally). Seems like this could lead to a higher HR to fly ball ratio which he has. Especially when compared to all the four seam guys with high spin rate throwing up in the zone (Degrom, etc.) - they are going to produce a lot of pop ups and a very low ratio of HR to Fly Balls. If doesn't trend down in the way you think it will, that could be something to look at.
A brilliant analysis every Yankee fan ought to know about and every detractor of Cashman's trade needs to reconsider. Thank you.

He’s doing great closing out games this year. Perhaps the best Yankees closer since Mo.

He IS the closer. Chapman has been replaced and he knows it. Clay is unbelievable. Hadn't given up an ER since his 1st appearance of the season.

Clay Holmes is LIGHTS OUT~
a pitcher will play totally different, when he plays for a competitive or not a competitive team. all he needs to do is stay healthy and make sure other scouts can see him.
0.38 ERA so far this season
Still don’t know how they improved his command though. I think that was the biggest change for him to the yanks

Maybe it's as simple as "he's playing for the Yankees". With the Pirates he got the Pirates strike zone (tight), with the Yankees he gets the Yankees strike zone (more generous).

AAAAAAANNNNNND.......now he's the best reliever in baseball
I’m sorry but this sounds absurd. You said that he would outperform. Why. His magical velocity was the only indicator. But that’s outsized velocity. Based on this it sounds like he was unlucky in Pittsburgh. Is that it? I will watch a few more videos…
Pittsburgh literally has no idea how to evaluate or utilize talent. The one pirates fan I know hasn’t watched ball in years 😂
