Here’s why the Ford Excursion was the right truck at the wrong time
In this episode I provide the history of the Ford Excursion, considered the largest mass-produced SUV at the time. It was based on the Ford Super Duty truck lineup that had been redesigned for 1998. The Excursion was immediately panned by critics for being unsafe and wasteful, so much so that after 69,000 sold in its first year of sales for the 2000 model year, sales dropped significantly each year after that, leading to its end in 2005. Today, used examples can sometimes go for over $60,000, as Ford never replaced the Excursion with an equally sized truck.

I was very interested in the Excursion with the 7.3L diesel when we had four kids, a dog, and all their gear to haul around. The only reason I didn't pull the trigger was because I was concerned about being able to park it some places. It was big, beautiful, and the interior was light years nicer than a Suburban.

I've driven 4 fords over the years, only owned 1- the 92 bronco (2002 250, 2007 150, 350) and they drove like boxes, and were slugs, and the 2000 Suburban had a very nice interior.
Another nickname I remember for it was the Suburban Assault Vehicle.
If Ford reintroduced the Excursion today, they wouldn’t be able to keep them on the lot. Just the fact that so many of these are still on the road all these years after the last Excursion rolled off the factory floor shows how much people love them and how much demand is there.

I remember being in this youth group/summer camp type thing as a preteen and our group leader borrowed a top of the line 2000 Ford Excursion from a friend for the week. Our 7-8 person group went everywhere in that thing and I couldn't believe just how massive it was. Must've been the biggest vehicle I'd ever seen at that point in time.
I started working for a Ford dealership in 2008. We had an Eddie Bauer edition come onto our used lot. Even listed at retail new pricing as a used car the phone was ringing off the hook for it.
We used to call these things the Ford Explosion - a dual knock on the size increase vs. the Expedition and the engine failures.

these things were gargantuan. basically ford's suburban. The FDNY used these for a long time. In fact they retired the last one about five years ago and went with GM 2500 pickup trucks.
I’ve been fortunate enough to have taken road trips in Mercedes S classes (to include a W220 S600), a Cadillac Deville, Lexus LS430, a couple of Lincoln Navigators, and several Grand Marquis. By far and away, the Excursion I took a road trip in was the most comfortable and least fatiguing of them all. Amazing vehicles in their own right.
I never had one but I've always wanted one with a V10.
This is such an excessive vehicle that one would have a hard time driving on a daily basis. I’d like 2 please

Better than Today's Suburban. New vehicles are over priced rolling trash cans.
I like the nicknames they gave Excursion in the newspaper article.
This channel is so rad.
Part of it was that, compared to the Suburban, the Excursion seemed less refined for the money. The engines were horrid gas-guzzlers with the V8 and especially the V10 lucky to hit 10 mpg. They were unwieldy in most handling tests. And soon after this came out, the Middle East war(s) started, oil prices were all over the place and being a massive guzzler wasn't the best image, and there were far more smaller cars on the road then and the Excursion looked like it would crush them. Today, the huge SUVs/CUVs get far better mileage, are safer, and with tech, can actually handle. I'm surprised Ford hasn't tried this again and toss the Expedition stretch version behind.

I remember people like Rush Limbaugh getting all excited and hard on the radio waves with this it was rather disgusting. He also oddly had an opposite affection towards the Yugo
I use to love those, but never wanted to own one, but I would imagine it would be a beast on a nice long road trip though.
You should consider doing a video on strange cars offered from automakers in the 1980s and 1990s. Like the Ford Durango, Ford SkyRanger, ASC McLaren Mustang, and the Dodge Dakota Convertible. I think that would be a great video.
We had one with a v10 best truck ever, hauled the whole family and was great for trips, one of many many cars I wish I still had!
This is a good used option for families that want to pull a medium size camper and bring a bunch of kids and a dog with them.

I remember those.
I’ve looked at a lot of online newspaper archives from the late 90’s to mid 00’s that dunk on the excursion for its size, weight and gas mileage.
The horsepower is kind of irrelevant for these large SUVs it's about the torque 😊
I recall the naming being more based on the fact that the explorer was for short exploration trips the expedition for mild expeditions. And the excursion for long excursions. Or that’s what the sales men used to say
The Excursion isn’t dead it’s just reincarnated as the Expedition Max.

There are companies that keep the Excursion’s alive such as MegaRexx and Custom Autos By Tim
Chevy should have taken some notes from the Excursion amd made a diesel version. Even today a 6.6 Duramax would be amazing.
i ordered an SD in 2000, i got $600 worth (which was a lot) of options for getting a manual trans. They were incentivizing so the autos could go in the excursions. The irony is I would have paid them extra for the maual.
I wish that intolerance for excessive size was a mentality that was still around today, it's just silly how big some cars and especially SUV's have become in the last 10 years
I was surprised Ford let Chevy have a big tow vehicle so long without competing. Every time I saw a Suburban it was towing some big camper trailers. Thank Pat, another great video.
I’d love to have one.

Once, I saw a black Excursion that had been stretched to have *six* doors. It didn't look like a limousine or professional car either -- just a factory-built four-row Excursion that the factory never built. (It also took up two parking spots.) I'd like to meet the guy who looked at an Excursion and thought, "I dunno ... I like it, but do you have anything, you know, bigger?"
Honestly it would probably do amazingly well today

God I’ve always wanted a V10 Excursion. Soooo bad.
Has it been a while? It seems like it to me. Let's check it out.
Did Ford came up with something similar to the Excursion, like a four door SUV Bronco in the late 80s early 90s? I saw few examples on the streets but it wasn't a Excursion name. They even had it in the late 70s early 80s versions as well.

This is wasteful? An enclosed body seems way more practical than a pickup bed thats empty 90% of the year. Body on frame is way more durable and based on the comments people still love these. The 7.3 diesel seems to make a bit more sense than a V10 tho :)
I had a coworker who thought a bit more of himself than he should have. He had an Expedition but I would call it an Excursion. He liked that, but he didn't know I was kinda making fun of him by playing into his ego.
I’ll take that over the sub
Created for the sole purpose of making, platform-wise, the biggest SUV ever. There might be some modern SUVs that are dimensionally bigger, but none of them are built on HD Truck platforms like the Excursion.
