The 1990s Mazda RX-7 "FD" is rapidly becoming valuable. I'm reviewing this 1994 Mazda RX-7 R2 to see why the FD RX-7 is becoming so expensive -- and to find out why the 1990s Mazda RX-7 is such a good investment.

    I think the nsx looks a bit better. Could be because my dad had an rx7 and it was in the shop more than the garage when i was a kid so i might be biased. Also never been a big fan of bubbly body work. Regardless, the rx7 did rounded edges right.

    The exhaust overheat warning is because the cat. caused some fires when the car was parked in dry brush. What you do if it comes on is ensure you're not parked over any flammable materials such as dry leaves. The headlight pop-up button is so you can clean the headlights, or if the motor breaks you can put them up manually and flip the button so they don't retract until you get the problem fixed. I had a '95 and ripped out the crummy Bose sound system. The supposed subwoofer was horrible & took up about 1/3 of the trunk. I notice your test car didn't have one, either. The car was fast and handled and stopped wonderfully on Texas ranch roads. I had the car up to 150 mph on Interstate 35. I ran out of guts before it did, though I felt stable and safe at that speed. It was definitely a date-melter!

    Hahaha would have been great to see him review the version with the Bose acoustic submarine tubes 😂😂😂 that was def a cool/weird quirk. Man.. if have to disagree though, those things sounded amazing and produced more hard clean bass than probably any car of its time. I LOVED them. The tubes only came standard in certain models though, not all trims. Either Touring models only or whoever ordered them as an option, not sure, but they had 3 different audio trims.

    As I recall, rotary engines get quite a bit hotter than traditional pistons. Not sure if it's the nature of the rotary, or if it's the higher RPMs they can withstand (maybe both lol), but my friend used to have one of the older models and had caused one or two (thankfully) small brushfires.

    Buck - Actually the heat sensor only detects when the pre-cat gets too hot, not the entire exhaust system. The purpose of the pre-cat is to help heat up the main cat quicker so that it can start working a bit sooner after first starting up a cold engine. The problem is the damn thing could sometimes get red hot and often in as little as 30,000 miles the core would fuse into a solid mass choking off the exhaust system and robbing the car of all its power. This is why most RX7 owner, myself included, either gut the precat or replace it with a down pipe. And once you do this that light will never come on again because you will no longer have such extreme temperatures in that area. Anyway you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to figure out that its bad to have a red hot hunk of metal about two inches from your passengers left foot (also where the sensor is). And of course letting it get red hot leads to the core melting problem I mentioned above. I can’t really say if the engineers at Mazda were thinking about the dangers of parking in tall dry grass when they put in that heat sensor but I’m sure they may have been considering the possibility of some sort of fire.

    One of the most beautiful cars ever designed....in my opinion

  • @G34RH34D
    @G34RH34D4 жыл бұрын

    I drove one of these beauties once in my lifetime when I was a valet attendant. It was red with beige leather seats all stock and in mint condition. The fact that it's a very rare car, e I complemented the owner and we had a chit chat for a few minutes about it. This was back in 2008. It was an automatic but it didn't matter because these cars even back 11 years ago were rare to see on the streets. Most of my co workers probably had no clue what this was back then. But 90s Japanese cars have always been my thing. And I think that's why the owner was very charismatic and nice and even talkative to me because I instantly complimented him on his ride. And it was an elder gentlemen. He was a man who was intro his Rx7 FD and made sure of it.

So yeah, can confirm EVERYONE tries to steal Integras. You can also get into them with nothing but a screwdriver, the only thing that saves it from being stolen in a single minute is the immobiliser so do not park them somewhere where they can be towed or pushed down the road.

    You're correct in that '94 was the first year for the 2nd gen 3000GT, but I fail to see how it went from boxy to swoopy...... The design differences from the FC to the FD are extremely dramatic because it was very different structurally from the FC in addition to needing that 'updated 90s look.' The FC hit the USDM for MY 1985 and thus sported the boxy 80s architecture whereas the 3S debuted for the '91 MY. Huge differences in styling from 1985 to 1991.

    @@IGamingStation The market. In the 80s/90s the market and economy were really good. Big tech and automobile boom. Car makers had multiple sports cars for all price ranges, and especially: coupes. Coupes aren’t so popular now because people don’t have as much money for even a cheap sport coupe, would rather make the possibly single car they can afford one that can carry their family. Even if they can afford two their spouse may need their own. SUVs are unfortunately all the rage. There are *less* sports cars to choose from, they don’t make new and varied platforms as often either. Hence why the Nissan Z has looked the same 2003-2020. 7:25 you're supposed to push the button a bunch of times really fast so that the headlights alternate popping up and down. The left one goes up and right one goes down then the left one goes down and the right one goes up. Its how cars in the 90's with pop up headlights used to greet one another on the road.

    Doug, great channel you have! About the Linked electric door locks: Not unusual, at least Dodge has them years before, I think others. About the Window Auto switch: The auto-release function is often used in aircraft (and IMHO better than todays design).

    Rotary engines are cool designs, but in practice they are the most unreliable, and often quite expensive to fix. Especially if you're paying someone else to do the work. That's why everybody puts an LS into it.

    The logo is a caricature of a rotary engine (triangle in a circle). Popping the lights without illuminating them allows changing the bulb without the lights being on.

  • @rustbeltrobclassic2512

    Anyone curious, headlights up, without them on was so if you lived in an area where you get ice and snow, you can leave them in the up position so that the motors didn't break when they would attempt to pop-up with the housings frozen. It was common, my 89 Corolla GTS had that, and my father's 86 Celica GTS had that too.

    The headlamp pop out is there so you can “flash to pass” or warn others in during the daytime. You can also find the door lock “quirkiness” in some ‘70’s cars including sedans

    When I had a successful bicycle component company in the 90s I treated myself to the exact car the RX-7 R2. I literally wore out the P - Zero tires in two months going to work thru Angeles Crest hwy, as I drove it like a go-cart. It had two problems, the interior squeaked and creaked like crazy, and the headlights were terrible as it easily outran the lights, it was scarry to drive it at night on an open highway.
