I just bought a Honda Odyssey and I absolutely love it. The seats fold into the floor and leaves a ton of space. There's storage compartments everywhere, even under the seats. Max cargo space. And it's long enough to carry my kayak without it hanging off. Minivans are far superior to an suv.

Most suvs are actually a pretty small wheelbase. Only those dedicated off road designed suvs have the bigger wheelbases (ex Toyota FJ, Landcruiser, Forerunner, Dodge Jeep, all the Suzuki and Mitsubishi suvs).

When Subaru intro'd the Forester in the 1990's, it was intended as a rational solution to the SUV question, with slightly higher vehicle height, captain's chairs, skid plating and arguably the best car-based 4-wheel drive on the planet. This "SUV-light" concept appealed to their primary Whole-Foods and granola market, but are great cars anyway. Ours is a 1999 S Turbo in signature green, basically a WRX with a tailgate.

In 2007, we bought a new Honda Pilot 4WD base model for around $24,000. It is our vehicle for out-of-town trips as well as pulling my utility trailer full of firewood and everything else. Excellent in the snow. Comfortable. We can fill 2 grocery carts at Costco and still have room to spare. Repairs: Every 7 years, we replace the timing belt. That's about all I've done to it. I'll have to do the big tune-up at 100,00 miles but that's 35,000 miles away and I live in a small town. I fill the gas tank once a month unless we go to Costco. The V6 engine is priceless. It's my last car. I'll never get anything else unless someone smashes it. It blows my mind the market value is only a few thousand. It's as good as the day I bought it with a few hundred thousand miles left on it. ❤ OOPS! It's a 2007, not a 2017! Sorry.

It seats 7, can tow 3600lbs, and when I need drywall, the stow and go is priceless. The Honda, our friends have one, and it has its plusses, but it's far inferior to the caravan in many aspects. They keep 1 seat out because they have 5 kids and find it easier for getting the crew in and out. But there is no stow and go, so that seat sits unused in storage. If they pick up an extra passenger, they have to put that seat back in the van.

An older Sienna AWD lifted 3 inches can go just about anywhere and used as a weekend RV. You can also place a 327w solar panel on top for some off-gridding

Have a brand new 2022 Wagoneer, the perfect vehicle for serious cross country traveling. Can actually use as a near home away from home with a mattress, an after market installed 40 in television, mini stove. The Toyota is good, but, too much ‘flimsy’ plastics, and the interior feels ‘cheaply’ made. The Sienna can’t go near off-road, and ‘psychologically’ driving a Sienna for long periods of time and not have any passengers and being single and alone may not be practical🤷🏼

I've always thought the SUV is a terrible idea for everyday road cars. The body is aerodynamically inefficient, using more gasoline (or kilowatts). It's inconvenient having to step up into the car, and gets more so as you get older. Same goes for loading luggage. It's less stable on cornering and braking. In my opinion the old fashioned station wagon or estate car is a far more intelligent and efficient design.

Nothing lives up to the price tag these days, cars are at least 20%-30% overpriced compared to general COLC inflation (like groceries and college tuition). If inflation alone were controlling car prices, for example, a new 2024 Ford Explorer Platinum should run about $45K to $50K MSRP, tops (a well-equipped 1994 Eddie Bauer was about $24K). But then, my 1989 Ford Ranger XLT well-equipped was $8800 new from the showroom floor .... of course, general inflation itself today is inexcusable but that's another topic ...
