Here’s Why Japanese Meals Use So Many Dishes

In Japan, it’s normal for a person to use multiple dishes for each meal. There’s a Japanese phrase 一汁三菜 (ichijusansai) and it means a balanced meal consisting of one soup and three side dishes to complement rice. Let me know what you think in the comments! Yeah, in Vietnam we also have the same belief. We say: "have meal" and we always use the word "Rice" in place of the meal

Chinese too! I think in all the dialects it's the same to call meal "rice" (only know definitively three that do bc those are what I'm familiar with - Mandarin, Cantonese, and my parent's province's dialect). Well, they call them dialects under one Chinese written script, but though the script is vastly the same, they are unintelligible in speech to each other-- like some related European languages

I am from Bangladesh and our main food is rice. We normally have it with two to three sides one of them is usually dal or lentil soup . And on speacial occasions there can be more then 10 sides. And rice is eaten for lunch ,dinner and breakfast(though some have roti).

@@Bento_Club to compliment this. The food that we specific eat makes a difference 😋. If you had a Bowl of rice, Imagine that exact same bowl portion size but instead of rice... Add something like pasta or some type of dish with ingredients that that add a bigger fraction of carbs.

Japanese people choose what is good to eat, based on the taste when combined with rice. Something salty, oily, meaty, fishy, or even sweety etc. Nowadays many Japanese ppl eat bread, and the consumption amount of rice has been declined when compared to the past, not only that but japanese ppl eat various type of meals such as Chinese noodle, Italian pasta, oat meal etc as a source of carbohydrate, but nothing can beat the joy of eating bowl-ful of rice with something goes good with rice!
