Here’s Why Japanese Meals Use So Many Dishes
In Japan, it’s normal for a person to use multiple dishes for each meal. There’s a Japanese phrase 一汁三菜 (ichijusansai) and it means a balanced meal consisting of one soup and three side dishes to complement rice. Let me know what you think in the comments! Yeah, in Vietnam we also have the same belief. We say: "have meal" and we always use the word "Rice" in place of the meal

Chinese too! I think in all the dialects it's the same to call meal "rice" (only know definitively three that do bc those are what I'm familiar with - Mandarin, Cantonese, and my parent's province's dialect). Well, they call them dialects under one Chinese written script, but though the script is vastly the same, they are unintelligible in speech to each other-- like some related European languages

Same in Cebuano.
I am from Bangladesh and our main food is rice. We normally have it with two to three sides one of them is usually dal or lentil soup . And on speacial occasions there can be more then 10 sides. And rice is eaten for lunch ,dinner and breakfast(though some have roti).
Who’s going to wash all those dishes tho??? 🤔

in korea too, the word for meal and rice are the same [which confused me SO MUCH when I first moved there] its common to have 3 or more banchan [반찬] or side dishes with rice as well
Crazy how even though that's a lot of food Japanese people are always really thin.

@@Bento_Club to compliment this. The food that we specific eat makes a difference 😋. If you had a Bowl of rice, Imagine that exact same bowl portion size but instead of rice... Add something like pasta or some type of dish with ingredients that that add a bigger fraction of carbs.

We eat small portions
the word for rice and meal(dinner) in chinese are also the same! or at least in my dialect it is
Love the balance. I grew up eating like that - multiple dishes, tapas style. Now though I appreciate how much effort goes into creating balanced multi-dish meals. Adulthood is a lot 😂

I mean. In English the word meal is related to ground up wheat, because flour and bread is so integral.
Oh great to know!
Albanians use the same word for meal and bread
Always wondered why there's so many sides
Yummy!
As an Chinese I always thought this was normal and was confused how people eat without rice. Also rice and meal is the same word too and yes we have side dishes.
I am definitely behind rice being the main part of the meal 🤣🤣
The more the better🙃
We said rice and meal the same in my language too
In Assam (India) we also denote Lunch and dinner as Bhat(rice) 😁
良いですね。 特にお刺身❗。
Japanese people choose what is good to eat, based on the taste when combined with rice. Something salty, oily, meaty, fishy, or even sweety etc. Nowadays many Japanese ppl eat bread, and the consumption amount of rice has been declined when compared to the past, not only that but japanese ppl eat various type of meals such as Chinese noodle, Italian pasta, oat meal etc as a source of carbohydrate, but nothing can beat the joy of eating bowl-ful of rice with something goes good with rice!

You're telling me this isn't normal in every country? (Fellow Singaporean here)
Rice is idea, rice is mind, rice is love, hate and anger, rice is kill invest and be, rice..is life
The word meal in English has more than one meaning too. Like meal as in corn meal.
What do you mean? We Asian all call eating a meal is eating rice in general, except when address specific meal like having lunch, breakfast, dinner.
Even in tamil we rice and meal As *sapaadu*
I mean, the English word "meal" means "roughly ground grain", so. We're not much better
All asian cultures derive this from the chinese btw
That doesn't really answer why tho lol. It seems like a lot of work for one meal
What no way
I live in Germany and Japanese food is better than fitness plans i start my also japanese
