    Why not go with the Bolt? Then you could have done all your driving on electric and used ones are pretty cheap.

    Shoulda addressed it in the video. Same reason the Prius Prime was not an option. I wanted solid electric range but without giving up the convenience of gasoline for long trips.

    Linus Tech Tips true. The volt is great because you can do all of your electric driving but if you need to go on a road trip or something else like that, you have the option of having convenient gas fill ups, which take a fraction of the time compared to charging.

    Also wondering if it was the same operator and the same Mavic 2 they were referring in the end of the video. The first 23 seconds of the video looks like filmed and colour-graded by completely different person than the one who filmed the next circa 25 seconds of this video. However I really enjoy the way they revealed Bolt for the first time :)

    I have a 2017 Volt. I am pretty pleased with it. I charge it at home and at work. My commute is about the max battery limit most of the year and have to run gas in the colder months. The most mileage that I have gotten on one tank of gas while commuting was 2600 miles mostly due to days that I forgot to charge. I took mine on a trip from Iowa to North Carolina the first week that I had mine. I was driving up a mountain in electric when I was overtaking trucks and other cars when I realized that I was hearing their motors and not mine. During my trip I stopped at an outlet mall in Sevierville Tennessee and charge for free while shopping for gifts. Then headed out to see how it performed in mountains. I have brake failure anxiety on mountains. There are tricks like putting transmission in L1 and pulling over when brakes overheat in a gas car. I just loved that if I had a 4 degree slope, I was charging. After the last mountain driving across North Carolina, I just drove forever. I stopped for gas whenever I got below half and ended up burning less than 16 gallons of gas for a 2200 mile trip. I found that many places let you charge free while you eat. I rarely used my brakes on the mountains. I pretty much only use my brakes now when I want to come to a complete stop.

    I recently bought a used gen 1 volt for around $10k US, and I've been really enjoying it so far. The car just makes a ton of sense, and it's a great option for those who want to get into electrics but need the range a gas car provides. (As long as you don't need to use the back seats!)

  • @BradleyMcCartney

  • @imnotgivingmyname2389

    @imnotgivingmyname2389

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@BradleyMcCartney It's held up great so far. I was lucky enough to find a 2013 volt that only had 55k miles on it. I have been daily driving it for nearly a year with no problems, and I took it on a 2000 mile road trip. No issues whatsoever. I caution you to do your research before you buy however. The value in these cars is entirely in the battery pack. If the battery is bad, don't buy. When test driving, you should insist the car be charged to full battery before buying, and then you should use the mode button on the dash to put the car in "hold" mode in order to test the gas generator. Beyond that, if you have an OBD2 scanner, there is an Android app that allows you to scan the battery cell voltages, and that will tell you if the battery is on the way out. When I bought my car, I looked at the lifetime mileage stat which the computer keeps track of. It said 45 mpg, which told me the previous owners drove the car mostly on gas, and therefore the battery was like new. I found out later my car belonged to a rental company, so it never got charged. Don't be too worried about the battery however. I know plenty of people with these cars who have gone well over 100k miles on the original battery, because the BMS design in these cars babies it so much. Good luck!

    The Chevrolet Volt is a very underrated car. 53 miles of range just on battery, which is perfect for going to town and back. And when you want to go on long road trips, the gas engine saves you from range anxiety. Not to mention, if the electricity runs out, the gas engine will charge the batteries half way so you can go back to electric for a while.

    I bought one of the very last brand-new 2019 Premiere Volts last year. GM had discounted it heavily, and in combination with my dad's GM employee discount and local state incentives, I paid just a hair over $20,000 USD. I also got the faster 7.2 Kw charger, power seat, and other upgrades. I mean, you just can't beat a deal like that. I've had it just about a year now and have only put 6,000 miles on it. I still love the car. I also owned a Model-3 that I was renting out on Turo for a while, but just sold it since nobody is renting during COVID. Some people were surprised I didn't sell the Volt and keep the Tesla. But the Volt literally cost less than half what I paid for the Tesla and I like it just as much.

    This review from the perspective of someone not nessasarily enthused about autosports / high end speed/torque is refreshing. there's part of me who enjoys things like track days and autosports and pushing cars to their limits, but realistically, when I'm going to buy my every day commuting and family vehicle, those aren't the needs that I'm caring about when I start taking test drives. I want to know about cargo space for hauling computers around, how comfortable all the seating arrangements are for when I take my family out on holiday, how much I can save at the pump and at the garage when it comes time to do regular maintenance, and how, overall, i'm going to like being in this contraption that I'm going to spend quite a bit of my life in while getting from place to place. I really appreciate that LTT (and linus himself) is starting to create some practical videos for us average folks who are somewhat tech-centric. Thanks!

They can cause major problems and it’s not something that can be “replaced” until the manufacture comes out with a fix. I remember one specific vehicle we service that received a software update every 2 weeks for about a year. 2016 Volt owner here, thanks for getting the word out! These things are awesome and not well know. One note regarding the battery buffer - Chevy says it's a certain percentage of the battery capacity and that percentage stays constant so it doesn't "give you the battery back" over time. The battery will degrade over time, but it'll be slower because of the protection from overcharging like you mentioned!

    Not exactly. Deteriorated batteries can be used for stationary superchargers or energy storage. They still work but have less energy density. Broken batteries - shorted, flooded or deteriorated so much that they have too low resistance and waste most of the energy (heat up a lot instead of storing it) - will either end up on landfill (for hazardous materials usually) or will be "recycled" for some materials and then worst, concentrated remaining will end up on landfill (similarly, should be treated as hazardous). Even though some places claim that they recycle something like 80-90% of battery, they don't recycle lithium yet. This 10-20% of waste material contains usually the most important materials which are very difficult to clean up and recycle properly. Typical Panasonic NCR18650B weighs 46g. Roughly 1g is lithium. You can easily recycle most of the stuff besides the lithium and still reach like 95% efficiency by weight.

    The Volt was criminally under appreciated. In production for 10 years with proven reliability, roughly the same price as a standard car and most people wouldn't have needed to use any gas, and it really didn't even need a special charger if you charge it overnight, it had no range limitations or range anxiety unlike all over EVs, and at the end of the battery's life it would've just been a great hybrid car that got good gas mileage. Unfortunately it got politicized because environmentalists think it's not pure because it still had a tail pipe (even though it rarely used it) and global warming deniers just wouldn't be caught dead in one.

    This is mostly because of the reputation of the hybrid. For example in Germany there is a tax reduction for business clients if they buy a plug-in hybrig. The problem is - the threshold is really low, something like 30-40km range. Guess what everyone does? Everyone is buying/leasing the cars that are just over that limit to get the tax reduction and people give no damn about charging it. There are a LOT of plug-in hybrids coming out of leasing after 1-2-3 years and the power cable was never taken out of the bag. Those cars never used the electric motors, some even turn off regenerative brakes for the more "oldschool" feel of rolling along and braking when needed. Just because the Volt was good and had better range and still enough space etc. - it did not went anywhere because of the whole reputation - that the electric range was crap, the cars were heavy, underpowered and way more expensive than their gas-only brothers with same add-ons. This will change tho, but for this the governments need to increase the plug-in hybrid tax savings to models that can actually do at least 100km/60miles on electric power with everything on (AC, music, phone charging etc. at the same time). Btw. Germany upped the bonus for electric cars up to 9000€ for entry/midrange cars and up to 5000€ for the higher end ones (not sure what the limit is, somewhere around 40k or so). But i myself do not see a huge future in hybrids. Expensive, complicated and heavy, combining the problems from both worlds - just not the right thing. Pure electric has come a long way, the only problem right now is the price and in some regions - charging, but both things will be solved over time.

'16) even has built-in navigation, so I can even see the local speed on the dash display in front of my steering wheel. I put OpenPilot in my Volt over 5 years ago for Level 2+ self-driving that is better than most anything out there! Its amazing, and when I upgrade to a Comma 3X it going to be 'next level'. The advanced safety features, built-in Wifi hot-spot, SiriusXM, a fantastic Chevy app for the Volt, Apple CarPlay.....seriously, what "tech" were you missing??? My 7 year old Volt has more tech than a lot of new cars today!! And its been a great car, and probably one of the most fun cars I've ever owned. I'll prob have it 6 or 7 years more, nothing out there I'd rather be in right now (especially with my Volt having OpenPilot). But glad you liked your Volt, you've prob moved on to something else now.
