Two people with two different viewpoints is a great formula. As a tech channel, I like that you focus on that more than some other car review channels. For EV reviews, charging is a big factor when it comes to purchasing. I'd like to see more on how that works for each car and if there are phone apps associated with the cars and how those integrate into the whole system. Keep 'em coming!

except they don't ... they're both basically performance car enthusiasts and Jake clearly stated that. a differing viewpoint would have been for example a non-enthusiast where the most exciting thing they use their car for is going grocery shopping... the whole review was basically nitpicking how much the car wasn't built for a car enthusiast. look how awful it corners! wow I can't do drifts... lame! the car wants to keep me in my lane... what blasphemy!

  • @BaschBodybuilding

the charging rates could be left out due to how variable it can be based on what you have access to. i have an XC40 Recharge and it can charge up to 150KW/H which can get you 0-80% in 40ish minutes...however superchargers can sometimes be only 50kw at stations so that number isnt great to base it off of. on the flipside, the electric porche can take 350kw/h which is cool, but in my area i know of only 2 at that speed in a 50 mile radius. i have a level 2 charger at my house which iirc is 30KW/H. all that equates to for me is that if i plug it in every night before bed it'll have a full charge for the next day. as for apps, depends on the charger and charging company. I have a ChargePoint charger and so use that app, but when i visit my inlaws, the public chargers are owned by Electrify America and so i use that app to pay. these variables that effect most EVs i think make it hard to give a super accurate explanation on the specific car being shown

    1. can't tether to your phone to drive infotainment, so when the built in cell connection no longer works due to network upgrades, the car's infotainment stops working. Plus being forced to pay for a data plan when you already have data on your phone makes no sense. 2. Short range and a lack of chargers means this is not a car that fully replaces ICE. You are more limited in how you can use it. A tesla includes the cost of building superchargers for basically the same price and has more range. Volvo has not built any chargers to support their cars. 3. Why is he claiming teslas loose their bumpers? That was fixed years ago. Now teslas are famous for driving in deep water, even floating in the water without being disabled or damaged. It made no sense to even mention this as they didn't deep water test the volvo at all. This feels more like a paid ad because it makes no sense to not see the limitations of its infotainment as a massive deal breaker or the limitation on long trips as a deal breaker. EVs that expensive need to fully replace an ICE in all driving, not just local driving. That infotainment is a ticking timebomb. Who wants to pay monthly payments to keep internet working when you can easily tether in other cars? This doesn''t feel like a good review from a tech channel. They have the power to get volvo to change that dumb infotainment limitation had they actually focused on it as the deal breaker it is. Aftermarket infotainment replacements are not an option for these cars because the infotainment is the control panel for all the car's functions.

@@JizzyNinja Well Teslas are still the best selling EVs, so I’d still say Tesla might be hitting the mark. Regardless, the yoke is only on the refreshed X and S models, with all the owners I’ve heard of all agreeing that it’s better than a wheel during the vast majority of driving, improving visibility and driving position. It’s something that people who haven’t tried for a week might hate, but a better option overall (for “98% of driving”) Given we’re talking about the S and Xs now, you should actually consider the fact that the refreshed models have extremely high interior quality of materials compared to before. Also, as tesla is a relatively new manufacturer, build quality is a short term problem, with only the US made models having them generally speaking, and even then, you get it fixed on the spot or after. It’s not ideal, but not a determining factor. The driving feel of the models are great. S and X both have adaptive suspension with great usability and diving experience overall. Not to mention the Tesla handling advantage. Tesla range advantages. Tesla efficiency advantage. Tesla seat comfort advantage. Tesla infotainment and speaker system advantage. Tesla acceleration and torque advantage , and last but not least, Tesla software/hardware advantage.

Great! One technical detail about one pedal drive is that the regen braking that comes with it is no different from brake pedal braking (both prioritize electric regen). Actually, range can be better without one pedal drive since free rolling is more efficient than conversion of kinetic to electric energy in some driving cases.

One thing that I think could be beneficial, especially with more family friendly cars like this, would be a visual representation of storage (stack a few PC cases in the trunk?). "Roadtrip" feedback, gained from going for a drive with an occupant in every seat might be nice - rear passenger comfort and access to vents/charging is often overlooked. Perhaps some indication on road noise as well? The feedback on the self-centre steering was really nice to see and the point about the dampers not being tuned for aggressive weight shift. Handling is often discussed vaguely so it's nice to have something more discernible. You do a great job of balancing approachability. Would love to see a "Colton scares the crap out of his passengers" vid for something more lighthearted!

Hey guys, great job on the review. I liked the dual perspective format. As others have pointed out it gives it the classic Top Gear contrasting review feel which was always great. As an EV owner (looking forward to your take on the Polestar 2 btw) I will say that charging perspective would be valuable. Charging speeds from 20% to 80% and advertised range vs. real life experience would be great to add for future EV reviews. Keep it up and hope to see more of these in the future.

I liked the video, but was kinda disappointed that repairability and consumer-friendliness wasn't researched and mentioned. With EV's even carmakers are often pushing extra hard against repairability. I know that Tesla has been fighting against repairability, but other carmakers are making it hard/impossible to repair your car or lock you into licenses and services as well. Is there any info about these issues on this car or Volvo in general?

I think your point is very interesting. Once you mentioned it it was obvious that this should be a thing. But I don’t know if LTT is necessarily the right the right outlet to dive into questions like that because it seems very automotive specific for a tech channel that sometimes review cars. Maybe I am wrong because cars becoming more of tech review thing because they are picking more tech each year. Who knows maybe someday there will be a entire LTT car spinoff channel

No manufacturer allows for this stuff nowadays. It's a very closed system and independent repair shops can't help you out if you've got problems with the tech in there. Of course you can still do things like brakes and shocks yourself, but not much more than that. With all these driving assistants and even self driving, the manufacturers won't take any risks. Just imagine a fatal crash because someone inexperienced messed up something during a small repair. It would be tragic, and probably more important for the manufacturer, really bad press.

As someone who occasionally watches car reviews I'm personally finding yours to be fine yet entertaining. Pro: Enticing narrative by comparing to tesla / having Jake as the 'antagonist petrolhead'-critic --> Entertaining Kon: The videos feel a bit all over the place in terms of overall structure and cinematography --> Without a clear and repeated structre (i.e. 1.Exterior, 2. Interior, 3.Boot, 4.Engine, ... ) I don't really feel guided/Cars cannot be easily compared between videos --> If you are doing the narrative-thing and not just a technical review I think you should put even more emphasis on it Maybe set the scene by starting with Jake's Drift in his BMW and maybe even add some dramatic cinematography with possibly some semi-sarcastic dramatic acting I hope this feedback was construcitve and who knows, maybe some people share my view - Love!

Love this video, and these types in general. Keep going! I know it's been done, but maybe, in line with your new testing lab, make a rating system for each point of interest: drive-ability, acceleration, but most important the tech integration and infotainment systems. As tech becomes more and more integrated, we need a rational, independent and tech experienced look at it. All other "shows" are mostly done by car guys, and though they're good, they do not do a good job of covering the pros/cons of the different systems, which in my opinion is now a huge part of the driver experience. This review and your one for the Taycan are the first real reviews I've seen of the big-screen tech (German infotainment needs work. I have a vw e-golf - love the car, but the infotainment suuuuuucks!).

I enjoy watching you review cars, and having driven the latest XC40s and their fully electric counterpart, the C40, (and owning a c30 myself) I have to say that the biggest downside of both is the suspension and infotainment. With all that power inviting you to do some more aggressive driving, the car rocks back and forth a lot, especially if you live in a place where the roads are a bit more bumpy. This was probably done for comfort, which I can get, because its a very pleasant drive. But for sporty driving I cannot recommend the XC40. Get yourself a hybrid S60 if you dont need the crossover capabilities. The interior though is very nicely done, but I would've liked to see physical buttons for the AC and heating controls instead of them being on the big console. To change those things you do have to take your eyes off the road and Volvo of all people should know that that impedes safety. For the rest, its a very nice and comfortable cruiser. The battery packs' range is nice, and even in the colder weather, they seem to only lose a few miles of range.

It only got good from 2002 when JC and Andy Wilman brought along Hamster and May and rebooted over the show. The original show included Noel Edmonds, Jeremy Clarkson, Tiff Needell and Quentin Willson...some of whom moved on to a competitor show, _Fifth Gear._

ALEX & CO - I am happy with your progression on car reviews. You havent " arrived" yet but I feel like there is a major difference in camera work and flow of the video compared to the last car review you guys put out. Seems like the camera crew and producer have finally done some studying of other popular car shows or channels. This is great and was much needed, keep progresing and you guys will have a solid car review series on your hands. Ill say it again, your fellow Canadians the KZread Channel Throttle House have basically perfected the style, and obviously you cant just steal their bits and humor but as far as videography goes they know what they are doing and It seems like you guys have maybe done your research on them or top gear or grand tour. (all car shows known for their cinetography ) So keep it up! LTT car reviews started out kind of cringe but I see noticable improvements, Iam excited to see the progression made. EDIT: As I watch on the addition of jake as the "counter opinion" is perfect!!! I suggest you keep him or another auto enthasiat from the team in all car videos. This dynamic is $$$ ( Only reason I mention someone else, Is that Iam not too sure who else on the team is a car nut... to be clear Jake does a great job filling the role he plays in this video and Id love to see him and alex work together on these car reviews further ! ) One more thought... If you want to get viewers who are interested in information on this vehicle, who arent LTT subs or LTT aware - you ought to make sure to put the vehicle model & model year into each title. We arent looking at the keywords you attach to each video, we look at the title, and if I search 2022 XC40 reviews and see this pop up with a title of " This Car Is Basially a Smartphone" I am probably going to choose the videos that directly mention the vehicle Iam looking for regaurdless of the thumbnail. Anyways, cheers!

Agree with these points. I think it would make sense to mention currency. Don't leave your Canadian viewers wondering if the mentioned price is CAD or USD, or if its availability in Canada differs from your bigger, American audience. Also would be good to speak to the charging network in and around the locale you're filming in to give somewhat of an idea of if its viable. Expanding into roadtrip reviews, to answer the question if the charging networks are established for roadtrips? Are chargers broken/non-working/not free? How is whole charging experience. I know its a bit hard right now with the highways situation in BC.

I'm very surprised at what truly sold me on Volvo being an excellent company. The tidbit of information about how the safety engineers at Volvo designed for both men & women is something I truly wasn't expecting, and I'll absolutely be considering a Volvo for my next car! Thank you Alex & crew, this was a great video

I just checked how much these were at my local dealership and they are the same price as the Model Y. It makes more sense to just get the Model Y since it has more range, a better charging infrastructure, and most likely will get updates longer.

It was pretty dumb to cite a rear bumper deep water issue on the tesla that was fixed years ago. Tesla started driving cars through deep water pits at the factories to validate there won't be issues. Now tesla's are famous for being boats in deep water with nothing being pulled off the cars. Tesla's perform the best in deep water out of any car now. He also downplayed the lower range and lack of chargers which is fundamental for replacing an ICE vehicle with an EV. It does not feel honest to me. Citing an old deep water issue also makes no sense and they didn't even do a deep water test on the volvo to compare. $55k is way too expensive for an EV that isn't any good for travel due to poor range and a lack of chargers. Range and charge speed are really the most important feature before you look at anything else, unless you intent to use it for local driving only, but that makes this crazy expensive for only local use. A tesla's price includes the cost of superchargers, why are these other vehicles so expensive if these company haven't build a single charger? As for infotainment, not being able to drive the infotainment by tethering your phone is a massive dealbreaker. Who the hell wants to pay a monthly fee to volvo just for internet you already have on your phone? Tesla does not charge for basic connectivity and lets you use everything over the internet by tethering to your phone. I expect more from a technical channel, these look like paid ads to me.

@@xx0stephen0xx You sound weird. The comparison to tesla that made no sense was done by LTT. It never needed to be mentioned at all as no real comparison was even made. So grow up. The biggest issues are that a 55k car doesn't let you tether to your phone for data which means it may not even work in 5-7 years due to cell network changes, plus forcing people to buy data they already have on their phone makes zero sense. (3g connectivity built into cars is being cut off now due to networks dropping support). These limitations are a massive deal breaker unless you plan to do a 3 year lease. Toyota just got eviscerated over a similar issue, it has absolutely nothing to do with tesla(you seem to be an anti-fanboi that always brings up tesla just to make stupid rants). The charging situation is fundamental. If it cannot comfortably be used on long trips, it is not an ICE replacement and that price is way too high for a short range EV. Again, grow up. The bmw i3 was 50k and used ones quickly cratered to below 20k because it was only short range. People do not pay more than $20-30k for a short range vehicle. The bolt is the king of short range and gm claims they will start making them again next month. For 40k or more, there are plenty of long range ones to choose from. Volvo makes this car for europe where long range isn't needed, but this is considered long range in europe because europe has a lot of chargers for this car to use. Cars that makes sense in europe do not make sense in north america because we have so few +150kw ccs chargers(50kw does not count, no one travels using chargers that require 1.5-2hr charge stops). Again, grow up.

Yep. The build quality on my '17 Model S is not that great. But I can go where I want for read trips and the car knows which chargers are available and which are not. The vertical integration works. There is no "range anxiety." MKBHDs experiment /w the Mache E showed the weakness of relying on 3rd party charger solutions. Getting routed to a level 2 charger by the nav when you're almost out of juice really sucks and having to switch to a phone app to find actual DC fast chargers is super lame.
