Here’s What Women Look for in a Man

A study showed that men prefer visual pornography while women prefer literary pornography, what does that say about what they are attracted to in a partner?

    Yezzir. I think that's why so many people choose the path of ultimate violence when they feel disrespected, in person. No one is capable of just fighting something out in a respectful manner, to move past the issue. Nowadays, if anybody disagrees with anybody, people jump to shooting each other or running each other over with cars, for what is really no good reason. I think having the ability to disrespect people without any threat of real consequence has made people into confused, oversensitive, over-reactive wussies.

    It is indeed a tremendous challenge, managing that balance. Seemingly impossible at times. So, a question I've pondered: if you're going to "err" then which side should you err on? And I think it's the aggressive side. Being too aggressive can be forgiven, but being too empathic can quickly lead to a loss of respect, and then the relationship is essentially over.

    I think there’s something more complex going on here. It does make sense to me that women are looking for the aggression that is under control. But these ’types’ may have something to do with the initial approach of men to an attractive woman. JP explained it elsewhere as the guy only sees his projection of an ideal woman, not her at all. Most women, to some extent, get beyond this. But in all women, I think there is a desire to arrest a man’s attention. That’s why men who are successful are attractive; they have other things to do and leave us alone for awhile. Maybe I’m the minority in this respect. When I dated, the respective guy never let me breath enough to even decide if I liked him. Instead he was always calling, showing up at my work, sending flowers, whatever it may be worshiping the ideal…each one was different but the outcome was the same - I got bored. Not his fault - he was chasing that ideal, but to me it seemed disingenuous - I didn’t realize what was happening the way JP explained it, which is too bad for me! So as a result, I never engaged and he ended up friend zoned. (This is why I finally realized I did much better with proximity relationships. I could get to know him at a distance, over time, no pressure.) The man brings flowers to an ideal, not to me. He calls to talk to the ideal, not me. He didn’t even see me. I really liked some of them but couldn’t get past the behavior of constant pursuit. Go howl at the moon, go hang in your cave at noon and terrorize the town at midnight, go canon bomb the ghost ship matey, and somewhere, somehow, as you’re passing by, make your way through all that danger and throw me a wink and a drenched, half crushed rose from your pirate coat pocket - cause the kracken nearly took you under! - but you rallied and saved the day. Then vanish into the smoke. That will make us want to know more! And want more of him the next time he shows up. Meh, idk, but there’s more to it than just what was mentioned.

    @@derrick2181 Nothing wrong with that approach, if it’s working for you and your partner, that’s great. Keep in mind too that I’m responding to Peterson’s ‘5 types’ discussion and trying to understand why each type is what women are choosing to read about. I’m also attempting to lay out the scenario for initiation of relationship as being a valid reason rather than mere aggression or narcissistic traits of the types. I’m not necessarily laying out a pattern for the established, committed relationship like the one you are in. Though I have to admit, the more busy my partner is, staying focused and pursuing his dreams and goals, the happier I am. Being partnered with someone who isn’t going to let me sway him off his purpose is highly desirable. I’m also intj personality type which sucks as a woman, but I think I’m right about this. It’s not about being rigid and unwilling to negotiate or change. Purpose and change go hand in hand - sometimes to better attain the purpose, one must be willing to change. A man can change and negotiate and still retain his seat of authority - it grants him greater power to do so actually. And hey! After all the working, if my partner spends a day with me doing nothing but chilling in the park, squishing our toes between the blades of grass, watching the kites flying overhead - that would be a good day. Bonding is important! But tomorrow, leave me alone and go do your thing out there in the wild wild West that men do. I’m no expert, these are just patterns of behavior I’ve learned in various ways throughout the years.. No judgement on anyone’s personal choices. Sounds like things are working out for you, and that’s really great:)

    @@ashleygatewood What you are saying is how all (most) women work. And its 100% understandable. YOU want to be the one who seek to cuddle, seek attention and ultimately get his validation. That is how it works in my relationship. Im very much focused on my "career", advancement and also pursuing my hobbies (working out etc). Then I let my girl come to me, whenever she wants. Sometimes she dont want, because women want alone time too, but they dont want alone time being stressed about the man not being happy because "they dont give him attention" - they want to be able to have alone time and yet still knowing the man dont really give a damn because he is too focused on other stuff - that makes them relaxed in the relationship and then within a day or four they will come back wanting to cuddle again, and the man is there, as usual, doing his stuff, and might now give some attention to his woman - and when she wanna go away do other shit again, he is completely fine with that, as he got important shit to do anyway. That is ultimately how it works and that is how u get a good stress free relationship that basically lasts forever, as the man dont complain, dont whine, dont create drama about bullshit, he just "exists" doing his stuff - and the women can come along for a ride, with the feeling she can stop at any point and he literally wont bother about it - this is what keeps attracting her back to him. The very moment she feels that he NEEDS HER to be happy, that is the moment she will get a "ughhhhh" - feeling. She cant help it, it just happends. Tell me your thoughts, Im 99% certain this is the correct approach as my relationship became VERY GOOD once I started acting like this. So men, just focus on your "purpose" - dont feel too attached to the woman, that is LITERALLY how makes her 100% attached and loyal to you.

    @@sundvallen Yes! You explain it well, the man needs to stay on his purpose and that’s attractive to women. It’s not because he is aggressive. I realize men are aggressive with each other and he is the protector of the family. But mixing the 5 types that women read about in romantic novels with aggression and narcissism seems odd. When a man stays on his purpose it put us, as females, at ease, you’re exactly right. It also makes us wonder about him when he isn’t around. If he is always there, always calling, putting us as the center of his life, then we eventually realize something is wrong. We want our partner to need us. But don’t act needy, lol, we are complicated creatures:) Of course we want you to desire to be with us, but if you give us space, we will come to you and that is, I believe as you stated, a good balance between masculine and feminine energy. When it’s switched, it becomes cumbersome. If a man stays on his purpose, and then we ‘tame’ him (i.e. arrest his attention, get him to put us above everything else for a moment, spend time with us, etc) then it’s more rewarding for us because we know he has plenty of other things he COULD be doing. It makes the time spent with him special. It changes slightly when marriage is introduced, but not much. I can’t understand why Peterson thinks aggression is what women are looking for and attracted to. Maybe I am not understanding him, he’s probably five miles above me. Haha, I’m no expert. So yes, I might be missing what he is saying. But it isn’t ONLY the aggression of these types. A man definitely doesn’t have to be angry or full of fury - that’s not it at all. He can be steady and a gentleman and never angry - but stay on your purpose and stay dominant. Stay in the seat of authority. Perhaps this edge rests with the man, stay away from anger but remain dominant. I see nothing contradictory about being a gentleman and remaining dominant. But I’m not a man so I may have it wrong. Of course men get aggressive in business, in sports and amongst themselves, have at it! I think that’s a plus because it’s built into a man. But it’s way more than that when it comes to attracting women. You’ve explained it very well.

Even with Superman Lois as a journalist embodies his values of the pursuit of truth, justice and (before the 21st century) the american way.

    If I were a man, I’d be asking myself these questions: 1. What type of women are reading these books? 2. Would I even want to attract them? 3. What’s their average intelligence (I think men don’t care about this. But if I were me, and a man, I would care. 4. Could these shallow stereotypes only be around to counter the fact that most of these women probably have husbands who are more like brothers than passionate lovers? Or worse, another child to take care of. One statistic says 84% of romance novel readers are women - that's not 84% of women in the population! Who's reading and how many are reading? There’s just so much more to all of this than these shallow, myopic categories. And I’m not so sure we’re rightly discerning aggression from passion from wrath (which by the way is a major deadly sin that will devour not only the rager, but all those around him/her). It will also leave one on top of a hill fighting with God...just ask Jonah. Anger is unstable. This is why I don’t completely buy into the integrating shadow thing. If you haven’t carefully discerned what it is your integrating, you could end up with a demonic ‘friend’ that has a bad attitude trespassing inside your own abode. That is NOT what women want. Volatility in men is completely undesirable.

  • @ashleygatewood

    @ashleygatewood

    20 күн бұрын

    @@Destinyzx "strength in standing up for yourself calmly" yes, this is what women look for, the ability to stand up for himself without having to use anger to get his way. Anger denotes weakness when it comes to arguing with a significant other. Passionate conversation, excitedness, etc is different from the anger I'm referring to. You can be angry and also not let it over take you. Aggressive anger can be used out there in the world carefully, but I don’t think it should be used against a significant other. Scaring and intimidating her isn’t the answer. (Respect given to him also plays into this, I’ll get to it in a minute…) I recently watched a documentary about a man who was so weak that he allowed his wife to bring him 10 days from death because he would not stand up to her abuse. I was horrified at how she treated him but also, he played into it 100% and that too was horrifying. It started with her demanding he change his hairstyle and the way he dressed while they were dating. He complied. Fifteen years later, after submitting himself to her (this was the man allowing the woman to usurp his seat of authority by the way), she was pouring boiling water on him and stabbing him while he slept, refusing to feed him (she was starving him), ugh…it was awful, people can be monsters. Most men obviously won’t allow this, it’s an extreme case but the sooner he draws the line, and honestly how he draws it, is important. Nothing wrong with changing hairstyles really, but I will say this, ultimately, women do not like ‘approval-seeking’ behavior. He still must be his own man within the bonded relationship. I noticed the other day in a Tom Cruise movie, Oblivion, that every time his wife told him not to do something, he did it anyway - the valiant hero archetype in spades. Of course, sometimes she’s right and he should listen - it’s tricky. Respect. This is where men can get dissatisfied or even disheartened in a relationship when he is not receiving respect, admiration and honor from the woman he loves. This breeds anger. Then he skirts his seat of authority and seeks out approval and respect from her which she translates as weakness and more than likely she disdains the behavior. In this case, it is the wife who is dropping the ball and straining the bond between them. He’ll most certainly find someone else, at some point, who will actively show respect (because a man interprets respect as love). And there’s no reason a wife or significant other should actively withhold this from her husband - it’s cruel - it’s the same as a man actively withholding love from his wife. Want a man to fall out of love with you? Withhold respect. Want a man to be great? Show him honor and respect. And show it not just when he’s right but also and most importantly when he got something wrong. This is the act of loving him as a wife. This should also, I believe, calm any unwarranted aggression, aggravation or anger on his part.

    Debating is used with facts and evidence. Trolling doesn't always use facts and logic. It's not made with the goal of advancing a logical point, but done to inflict misery for its own sake. I think you would enjoy finding Dr. Paulhus's full length papers or even just the abstracts online, particularly his paper called "Trolls Just Want to Have Fun."

    I love you, Dr. Peterson, but you lost me when you started talking about online anonymity. As someone who used to use an anonymous forum, these things have their place in society, particularly when there could be serious social or legal repercussions for expressing certain ideas. If anything, the US Constitution effectively canonized the concept when it established freedom of the press, with the understanding that anonymous journalists/publishers/anyone with a pen and paper/radio broadcaster should not be penalized for expressing that which they thought to be true. I do not say this lightly, as I have witnessed firsthand the kind of irreverent sadism prolonged exposure in such anonymous environments can cultivate. But my time in such forums was also a learning experience, and a much-needed trial by fire that grew me and countless others a thicker skin. The free flow of ideas in such forums likewise led to exposing quite a few ideas to serious scrutiny that would have been unheard of before. Modern meme culture is itself an outgrowth of 4chan, which in its prime was simultaneously the Wild West and sewer of the Internet, all built upon anonymous posting with minimal moderation. Likewise, "trolling" is an ambiguous term that can mean a lot of things to a lot of people. And yes, anonymous boards like 4chan and SomethingAwful used to be very open about promoting such bullying (as evidenced by the latter's "Helldump" board, whose denizens regularly found people and _bullied them to suicide for their own amusement)._ Unfortunately, that old definition has drifted considerably, particularly as website moderation has been tightened (and abused) across the board. The dreaded "trolls" of the 2000s and early 2010s are mostly extinct, though the most genuinely toxic have graduated to *_being the most vocal advocates of cancel culture._* This has been best evidenced by assorted "bully hunters" and the Twitter "Trust and Safety Council," wherein the psychopaths most responsible for the problem in the first place are unwittingly given control of the mechanisms ostensibly designed to keep themselves in check. In practice, those crying the loudest about harassment online tend to be those engaging in it themselves, often reframing criticism or even discussion of their own hypocritical behavior as "harassment." This means that more often than not, cries of harassment are disingenuous, often designed as a rallying cry for defense aimed at the gullible, the ideologically aligned, and other bad actors running rampant. Worse, the more successful of these crybullies tend to have institutional power or connections to those who do, leading to academic or media narratives framed in the favor of the false victim and while slandering their real targets (e.g. everything related to GamerGate). "Solidarity" is others in on the grift working together to protect their shared racket. And over the last decade, this has led to spiraling moderation and censorship on every site at every level of discourse. The term "troll" has become the modern equivalent of accusing someone of witchcraft, _with all the dehumanization that implies._ Even if "troll" isn't used to paint a target on the speaker's back for opposing someone's agenda, it still all too often used to justify disregarding what they have to say, no matter how truthful, substantive, or nuanced; "ignore him, he's just a troll." Whether we like it or not, anonymity is one of the edges of the double-edged sword of free speech, and there is much to be gained by diving into the chaos of anonymity and returning to tell the tale. Better to learn how to deal with it head-on than sacrifice fundamental liberties in the name of fighting it.

    My thoughts exactly. But an issue we face is that we can live to 80-100. That’s another 60 years, that’s a LONG time to be alone. We may be happy now but in 40 years when all our friends have family’s and kids and we are alone I’m sure we will regret the choice of staying alone. Everyone I have spoke to who has kids has said it is 100% worth it and it’s the most fulfilling thing in life. Having kids and a relationship is a big deal and we can’t just brush it off. Over the years I’ve decided that it is what I need to do in life. We need a family, healthy relationships and to look forward to the future. Besides, more responsibility is probably a good thing.

    I think what you’re referring to is also what the Dr. is ultimately talking about as well. It’s just that he’s also characterizing the men you’re referring to as not just generous/kind but also somebody who has the capacity for aggression and competence. “Women have to pick a man who has the capacity…enough of the capacity for aggression to protect themselves and others and to move out into the world against a fair bit of opposition but whose also simultaneously emphatic or perhaps conscientious enough to be caring and sharing.” In other words, it’s competence driven generosity. The Dr. refers to a book called “A Billion Wicked Thoughts” and how it was found that the characters in harlequin romances that are identified mostly in female pornographic searches illustrate the point he’s trying to make where the man is usually a billionaire, pirate, vampire, surgeon, or werewolf. I think we all agree with what you said. Generally speaking women want men in the way you characterized them, but Dr. Peterson says that’s also the desirable ending of these harlequin romance stories with these characters: for the innocent, well meaning, virgin female protagonist to tame the male monster (in whatever aforementioned permutation they embody) into someone who can engage in a prosperous romantic relationship with them. She would desire all the things you listed, but would prefer if they came from a ‘tamed monster’ who is also widely competent and channels aggression into something positive. At least, that’s my understanding of what I’ve seen from Dr. Peterson on this topic.
