Here’s what we know about COVID-19’s impact on the brain

Ғылым және технология

When COVID-19 first emerged, many researchers were focused on its impact on the lungs. But others, including Avindra Nath, Clinical Director of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, suspected COVID could also have a profound impact on the brain. Brain autopsy data from those who have died of COVID-19 have confirmed these early suspicions, revealing damaged blood vessels and inflammatory cells. Less is known about the direct impact on the brains of people with persisting symptoms weeks after an initial infection, a condition known as Long COVID. What at first seemed like a laundry list of neurological symptoms has now been focused into major categories, says Serena Spudich, a neurologist at Yale University. Watch to learn how researchers and doctors have been teasing apart how COVID impacts the brain, and testing treatments to alleviate symptoms.

Had Covid in July 2020, haven’t been the same since. Prior to Covid, I’d had Lyme/CFS and some other issues so I was no stranger to brain fog but this is different. Covid left me with relentless migraines that felt like my brain was going to explode for many days on end. Fluvoxamine helped tremendously with the migraines and feeling of my brain being swollen but the side effects were really annoying. Things that I was previously good at, I’m not great at anymore. My sense of direction is not as good, I’m far clumsier, fine motor skills and spatial awareness are both diminished. Word recall and vocabulary have suffered. Then there’s the personality changes. I used to be funny, extroverted and sociable, I’m not anymore. Nothing really brings me much joy, it’s like I’m not making dopamine or seratonin. Food doesn’t taste as good, my sense of smell is still stronger than most people’s but it’s definitely diminished from what it was. I just feel like a hollow shell of the person I was before. I try to fake my way through life and act normal but I don’t want to live like this for a lifetime. There’s so many of us who are suffering this hell and we really need help from Drs and scientists that are willing to take us seriously.

For headaches, you might be low on magnesium and vitamin b complex. Because both Covid and the vax have a form of adenovirus, it is necessary to increase your intake of vitamin c (1000-2000 mg daily) to counteract the virus as adenoviruses infect the brain. I also think fluvoxamine should be ceased immediately or weaned off of if you are losing motor skills and spatial awareness as it is a sign that something is going on with your cerebellum. Melatonin (10mg) can réverse the damage if it’s in early stages…. If you care about your health please stay away from SSRIs

I had covid in early July of this year and since then I have not been the same! I’ve had major brain fog and probably the worst thing I developed was insomnia from it. It has truly affected my mood/personality. I went from being such a motivated person who was really active to someone who now suffers from depression & anxiety. It truly has changed who I am. Everyday is a struggle when before I never had an issue. I really hope everything gets better for everyone suffering. It truly has crippled my life in a way but I’m learning how to live with it. Prayers for everyone.

I had Covid in January. After recovering I noticed I had what some have called brain fog. I really had trouble concentrating. For the record I do a lot of working out. Primarily aerobic but also some weights too. I decided to see if I could use my workouts to help. I decided to try this since I have experienced in the past how a good cardio workout really seems to clean out my system. I went and did two days of really hard cardio. I absolutely murdered it hard as I could for several miles. Particularly the second day. Brain fog was gone and haven’t seen it since. Don’t know if this could help someone else but it is my experience.

I was mildly sick for a week from both. Feb 2022 I got covid again and was bedridden for 2 weeks before I got any relief. The lethargy was horrible but the worst of it has been the continued brain fog. I struggle with recalling simple words and names. My short term memory is hit or miss. 36 years old male, and i am ill over a year. I am living hell. And it isn't about the respiratory system. Before covid i had gi issues like ibs flatulence etc.. but i could live with them. After covid it is like my GI problems started to have their own neurological problems. Involuntarily swallowing (!) started. My tongue and jaw started to loosen. It is unseen. I felt like there was a tremor and tension through my throat-esophagus track. After losing 15 pounds, 3-4 weeks later i got little better and gained my appetite, but then i spit light red blood with stomachache and throatache. I did endoscopy immediately but they didn't find anything. Then everything got worse. I lost my appetite for good over a year. I am experiencing a worsening throatache that no ENT professors can detect with camera. I have examined by over 60 professors. Gastroenterologists, ENT Professors, Neurologists etc.. i did blood tests, endoscopies, colonoscopy, CTs, MRs even EMGs. Throat pain is killing me. Loss of appetite, fatigue.. these are also challenging. I have other symptoms but i dont know how can i bare this throat pain. Gabapentine isn't working. Diclofenac isn't working. They can not tell any reason other than long covid.

I got a cold earlier this year and now I don't think it was. I was in the emergency room within a week unable to breathe and feeling like I was dying. Never thought it was covid or covid related, I was too shocked. Since then my entire spinal column buzzes from my tail bone right up to the back of my lower skull if I lie down, plus there's enormous pressure in my upper back and between my shoulder blades, feeling like blood is pumping, pulsing and rushing through my upper back and neck, spasms, difficulties breathing through my nose. I can't lay down to sleep and have to sleep sitting up because the pressure triggers panic disorder (totally new). Figured that one out by accident. The symptoms at first we so varied I'm amazed my doctor listened. It's not over, it's gotten worse, and the tinnitus can sometimes make you wish for death because it hurts so bad and triggers panic attacks, but I don't hear anyone talking about spine, head, neck, ears, jaw and throat problems. I feel alone. Energy crashes no matter what I do, showering feels like an impossible task. I can't be the only one, and I'm struggling everyday to keep it together. Sleep is interrupted. I have to take anxiety medication now or I can't function and it causes people around me anxiety because they can't help. It's almost destroyed my close relationships because they think it's just age or psychological or psychosomatic and can be controlled by methods used for typical anxiety...sadly I need anxiety medication because I can't do anything else that's working, and it's all I've got. It can change your personality too. I was NOTHING LIKE THIS LAST YEAR.

Sadly, I had an employee who 6 months after covid saw a huge shift in her personality making it impossible to do her job. She became very paranoid and manic. I don't even know if she realized what was happening. She stopped communicating entirely and we had to let her go. She lives alone, so the entire thing was very tragic. To this day, I hope she's okay.

I have lupus plus leukemia and I had just finished chemotherapy. I was 3 times vaccinated, wore my mask. I was admitted to the hospital on April 14th, I have no memory of the 2 weeks before and the first week in the hospital. When admitted my O2 Sat was 77%. When I was sent home, I was sent home on oxygen. 2 weeks later, I was admitted again, fear of blood clot in my lungs. My breathing is better, lungs still aren't fully healed. But my cognitive ability has declined, I know it has, my friends know it has but are too nice to say so. It's so scary.

Tinnitus with ear sensitivity, mild headaches and very mild brain fog (feels like I smoked a little weed without the feeling of being high) since July 25th 2022. First week or two sucked with brutal 8-9/10 ringing. Now its around a 3-5\10 depending on a spike or anxiety. I'm hopeful that it'll get better on its own over time or that studies will improve and we'll get treatments that are helpful not only for us long Covid sufferers but for other sufferers that have similar symptoms as us. If you have faith please pray for all of us and treatments that work. if you don't have any faith then stay strong and stay positive guys. Maybe share some of your stories with one another and maybe find a small support group if you need one. They are out there and they help. ❤

My brother caught covid just a month before vaccines were available in the USA. He seemed to recover but he suddenly couldn't digest his food and has lost 70 pounds in the last few months. He can't eat anything solid. He told me that he tried to eat a few slices of well ripened mango but he vomited several hours later and it was completely undigested as if he had just sliced it. His doctors have ruled out physiological problems and are now treating it as a psychological problem. He's 60 years old and has never had problems related to stress. He's always been a laid back guy, generally positive, likes to crack jokes and active in church. He's also having heart problems. I feel so bad for him because he was very cautious during the pandemic but he had to take our mother to the hospital for skin cancer treatment that couldn't wait during the peak of the pandemic in New Mexico and both he and our mother caught covid, probably at the hospital. I hope this research can help him. Thank you.

I’m so sorry to hear this. And I’m so angry at China, they know what this virus does to the host long term, that’s why China have a zero covid policy, they have all the years of lab research, they know what this virus did to all those lab animals. I warned people 2 years ago that covid is a bat virus and they are the most dangerous of all viruses and I compared it to the Lyssavirus that’s in bats in Australia, it can lay dormant in your brain for years and come out later and send you mad and you die, it’s Australia’s version of rabies. It can take anywhere from 1-7 years to come out and kill you. And this KZread video they put the Lyssavirus up on screen, I just knew it. I’m so angry because both my sons and their children had covid, one had the delta variant and the other the omicron variant.

I got COVID on April 3rd, 2020. As much as well all quarantined , my entire family at home got it . However, my dad , little sister and I got it the worst. I noticed my little sister and I have the same immunity system as my dad and my other sister like my mom. High fevers for over 2 weeks, our legs having purple spots ( apparently our blood was coagulating ), couldn’t eat or drink . My sister lips were blue and mine as well . My mom with COVID was trying to help me when she saw I was struggling to breathe and I was trembling. She called 911. I was hospitalized the most since I have asthma and ended up getting pneumonia. I was on so much medication that my liver hurt. Took me 3 months to mostly recover . I noticed since then I have brain fog, I constantly now cough, trouble breathing, lose energy quickly , random moments my heart starts beating like crazy . I also for 2 years struggled with my mental health.( having horrible thoughts to end my life) . My dad and little sister have similar symptoms after COVID . It’s crazy how this virus has ruined so many lives. My uncle wasn’t so lucky . After being intubated for a month , he passed away… I attended on zoom over 10 funerals of family and friends who passed away from COVID . I also work for a medical equipment company and that took a toll on me. Hearing that many patients passed away or their family members calling in crying to pick up the DME because their loved one died. I was so overwhelmed

Yup for me covid was so bad to the point where it triggered bad health anxiety and also had a bad panic attack from it. I wish more people would talk about this so that I could at least find some conform from it because going through this all alone isn't easy for most of us and I can completely relate to it. Maybe for me it wasn't as bad but I did however lose 3 people in the same month back in 2019 but it wasn't covid related though but still extremely depressing stuff. But man, this covid thing really took a toll on me and a lot of people. I still to this day don't really know how to properly move on from it. I know people say things like "you should move on" but what if you can't then what are you supposed to do? I can definitely relate to the mental health struggles and the suicidal thoughts. I'm usually good at staying hopeful but during the covid times I was having so many of those bad thoughts and honestly some days I got really scared of my own thoughts because you tell yourself that you aren't suicidal but sometimes your body doesn't know what it can do and I didn't want to be one of those people who did it just unexpectedly cuz when you feel overwhelmed from anxiety and from life in general it's hard to really have a lot of control over yourself and over your own body and so this is what I was genuinely scared of. I don't know if you're still going through this or not but just know that you aren't alone in this, man. I feel you and I can relate to this

When I had Covid, towards the end I began experiencing a spike in happiness...I'm talking childhood elation. 2 days later I dropped into the scariest depression ever (still suprised I pushed through it). Meds were given to treat mental health symptoms but they still didn't go away. In addition, I now had brain fog when before I was pretty sharp. Many of my memories are wiped out, both short and long term. I have to keep a pad and pen with me at all times to capture important thoughts because 2 seconds later it may be gone. I've suffered from Rheumatoid Arthritis (since 2016) and I've told several people "if I had a choice between Covid and RA, I would gladly stick with arthritis". This a daily battle that doctors don't understand 😒

They already know that covid affects the lungs and heart mainly so there is an obvious depletion of oxygen to the circulatory system and brain. There has to be better and easier ways to treat people then to pump them up with more drugs. Ugh This is gross

I hate to say it but the brain fog is probably permanent. I've been battling it for 8 months, I also have vision problems now and the eye doctor told me it's not my eyes but brain damage similar to what he sees in veterans who suffer concussions from a blast. There is such thing as a viral TBI "traumatic brain injury" the brain swells up and is damaged just like when it's impacted. I have a ringing in my brain now thar sounds like a flourecent light bulb is going eeeeeeeee in my head. Never goes away. I never got a cough, the virus seemed to avoid my lungs. I hope I'm wrong and it goes away but I'm just learning to get used to feeling partially drunk all the time. For those of you who don't believe this I hope it never happens to you the trauma I've been through has made me crave death.

Don’t give up hope. Even recovery from TBI or a stroke, which is an insult to the brain, recovery is often minimum a year. If I were in your situation I would look at healing through nutrition, omega 3s , anti inflammatory foods. I had brain fog for 1 month after mild covid and it was scary. I still have no sense of smell and my taste is reduced, somewhat numb. It’s been 5 months.

Headache, temperature spikes, loss of smell & taste, weakness hacking dry cough & difficulty breathing. Afterwards we noted a decline in mental capacity. Put the honey to use walking or doing something to train the consumption of energy

I was already struggling with fibro and chronic pain from 4 car accidents (none my fault thankfully) for thirty yrs, so I'm used to coping with these symptoms. But not the cognitive stuff. Or the coordination issues. Persistent ear/sinus issues. The breathing issues. Over all fatigue and muscle pain. I worry what's going to happen if I catch a variant. The struggle is real. I'm sorry that it took a pandemic that spotlighted this health issue. And that millions are now struggling with health issues like me. The fact that patients present themselves to doctors with illnesses and doctors think it is o.k. to tell them it is psychological is just so wrong. When did it become standard practice for doctors to write off patients "ills" just because they have no clue, AND no desire, to try to help the patient. So much is wrong with our healthcare and this is a very salient point that needs to be addressed.

I hope this is a turning point for finally understanding autoimmune disease, theory being an underlying virus is present which “turns on/activates” an autoimmune response and never shuts off (I.e. Covid, Epstein-Barr, HPV, etc). Since autoimmune disease affects women more than men it hasn’t been studied or researched as much, and the treatment drugs are very old. Maybe this will revitalize research again.

BLESS these physicians/researchers! It’s so refreshing and encouraging to see medicine move in this direction…well…these virologists and specialists. The entire medical system needs desperately to learn from these extraordinary individuals - proudly advocating for their patients, thus, remaining their primary concern! Their compassionate hearts are both evident and commendable! I truly hope medicine and future medical practitioners will use these physicians as “role models”! We need to encourage physicians/researchers to continue such compassionate, fruitful work and dedication to their patients…not just monetary gain or prestige! We cannot reward or permit the medical staff, medical companies, hospitals, pharmaceutical, and medical interest groups and businesses within the entire medical framework benefit from patients’ illness and perpetual suffering!! Medicine was designed to heal, prevent, and treat disease and other medical conditions! The patient should be the focus - NOT the astronomical monetary benefit! It would be an extraordinary boon for patients and medicine alike - if the practice had such experts dominating our system globally!!

People after 2 years my long covid symptoms like fatigue improved , I hope this gives hope to those still suffering there is light at the end. The fatigue improved the most. Brain fog changes not the least out of the other symptoms but hopeful it gets better too . Even my cholesterol dropped without any diatary changes that covid caused . Things that helped me were vitamin D3 with K2 MK7 variant and Nicotinic Acid and Longvida Tumeric over past 2 years. Don't give up hope people ! Many are starting to get better, it's different time frame for each . I think long covid inside us will die off just like it is happening outside. Much love to you all 😘❤️✌️

I had covid in February of this year. I had a high fever for a week and a half before it broke. Afterwards I lost my sense of smell and taste. It took them about a month or so to return to "normal". I'm still not sure if they are fully back yet. I felt very weak for a couple of months after still, even going up a flight of stairs was very exhausting and I live on the third floor of a building with no elevator (I guess lying on the couch for 2 weeks will do that to you). Also, my personality has changed as I'm more prone to staying at home and leaving the house much less. I don't feel like meeting with people as much as I used to and my anxiety is through the roof.

my mom has ME/CFS since 20 years ago and she also got Covid a few months back but luckily had a mild case. Ever since long covid came into the medical telescope doctors have started taking my mom's disease more seriously which I'm happy for. She used to be neglected by medical profesionals saying that ME isn't a real thing, it's just a misdiagnosis from childhood trauma and she needs "psyciatric help" even though she's been to the psycologist for 25+ years. She's not in need of a god damn psyciatrist, she's in need of physical medical attention. We are so tired fighting "profesionals" (the quotation because none of them ever read into the illness). It's sad when dentists show more compassion and understanding for her case more than doctors do. Dentists always try to make her visits as mild and as free from sensory input as possible. Doctors have her sit on a chair in a room with a running TV, lights and vending machines hours upon hours leaving her alone. Her going to the hospital causes more damage than staying at home. Luckily the science surrounding ME/CFS has taken a big leap since long covid became a central focus inside the medical field.

I had a very mild case of Covid in the later part of last December . This is when the Omnicron variant reared it's ugly head. I'm glad this variant was such milder than the original as I think I would not have made it to talk about. But afterwards I noticed I was feeling worse as time went on. ALL my Auto-Immune disorders' symptoms became worse or came back on me! Then the fatigue was hieghtened to the point I can think of doing something like even taking my meds and didn't have the energy to get the glass of water from my kitchen. So many things that is easy to do I just sit and think about how exhausted I feel. Now as of late my stomach issues are worse and the lightheadedness I had before contracting Covid is practically causing me to stumble and fall out in the street while walking! My chest bothered me and headaches. And ,I must not forget my forgetfulness has increased with leaps and bounds!? I,'m forgetting my doctor's appointments as well as other important things.

My tinnitus has also gotten much louder. I’ve had all blood tests, a spinal tap,and seen two neurologists and two headache specialist. I am still suffering. 😢. Who do I see now? I’m feeling worse.
